Swiss Bluetec Bridge: Swiss st...art-ups benefit disadvantaged populations
more
|
In addition to the sustainable... management of resources and good governance, water-related challenges open up a wide field for technological innovation, particularly in the application of nanotechnologies for water treatment, especially ones which are energy-efficient. The challenge for Swiss Bluetec Bridge is to put these cutting-edge 'Swiss' technologies at the service of the poor and ensure that they are sustainably managed. To do this the project must seek to bridge the gap between public support for start-ups and private investment.

Improving seed systems for sma...llholder farmers' food security
more
|
Smallholders often use informa...l seed systems to meet their seed needs. The project increases the access, availability and necessary diversity of adapted seeds to smallholders to reduce their vulnerability to shocks and contribute to their food and nutrition security. In national and global policy dialogues improved and pluralistic seed systems that better respond to the reality and the needs of smallholders are promoted and smallholders will get political recognition for their role in germplasm conservation.

|
As the population and the indu...strial industry in Ba Ria Vung Tau Province is growing significantly, an appropriate wastewater management and treatment is required for the further social and economic development of the region. The project will connect households to the sewer system, rehabilitate and extend a semi-separate sewer system, establish a wastewater treatment plant and improve capacities at the new sewage and drainage company, BUSACO. This should also serve as a basis for the enforcement of industrial wastewater treatment. BUSACO will directly benefit of the project, the indirect but key beneficiaries are the approximately 90'000 inhabitants of the growing Ba Ria municipality and the population downstream of Dinh river and Thu Luu ditch. The project will be financed under the Mixed Financing Line II.

The project aims to create aro...und 10'000 jobs along the aquaculture value chain in five governorates (Behera, Kafr-El-Sheikh, Sharkia, El-Fayoum, El-Mineya), in a pro-poor approach and focusing on production and retailing. Secondary benefits concern more ecological and water conserving production techniques; a more favourable institutional, policy and regulatory framework; as well as improved nutritional health of low-income consumers, given that fish constitutes the cheapest animal protein available. Outcomes (objectives): (1) Reinforce profitability of aquaculture producers and create 9'142 jobs in the governorates of Bhera, El-Fayoum, Kafr-El-Sheikh and Sharkia. (2) Create 900 jobs in the aquaculture retailing sector (for women). (3) Increase farmed fish production in El-Mineya governorate and create 250 jobs; Pilot and disseminate methods to decrease environmental and water utilization impact of aquaculture. (4) Facilitate efficient and sustainable value chains in the aquaculture sector and optimal institutional, policy and regulatory frameworks. (5) Contribute to nutritional health of low income consumers.

As agreed between Switzerland ...and Greece during the set-up of the Swiss Enlargement Contribution, the two countries will implement projects, which are not located in Greece but in some kind favorable for Greece. Switzerland and Greece together with Macedonia identified the here proposed project for wastewater treatment in Gevgeljia, a town located at the Greek border. Switzerland is supporting the water sector in Macedonia (MK) since 1994. As follow-up of the discussion with Greece on the Enlargement Contribution, Switzerland identified projects in the neighbourhood of Greece (GR) that could be beneficiary for Greece too. One of the proposed projects was the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Gevgelija. With this project Switzerland confirms its status as the major donor in Macedonia in the area of (waste)water treatment and management.

Improvement of National Qualit...y System
more
|
The program aims at improving ...the capacity of conformity assessment institutions to enable them to provide world class services in the area of standardization, testing, certification and inspection for key export value chains (fruit/vegetables, cocoa, fish products, wood). These value chains will act as drivers for an improved national quality system and have an important poverty reduction potential. Apart from traditional quality and health safety standards, the program will also support the uptake and implementation of private voluntary standards by producers. Ghana's export sector has been steadily growing over the last four years, mainly driven by the extractive industry and key agro-forestry products, such as tropical fruit or wood. However, border rejection rates of Ghanaian exports to the EU and the US due to non-compliance with international standards are still relatively high. Thus, deficiencies in the area of product quality and safety remain important, despite significant progress made with regard to the functioning of the national quality management system over the last years.

Food security knowledge platfo...rm and policy dialogue India
more
|
India, a potent emerging econo...my of 1.3 billion people, has an endemic food insecurity affecting hundreds of millions of people today and is home of half of the world's malnourished children. Complex societal structures and political deficiencies are part of the challenge. The present project aims at increasing the policy coherence for effective action to improve food and nutrition security. It will do so by bringing new evidence on the fundamental problems to be tackled, and by stimulating the dialogue between people and institutions engaged in poverty reduction, agricultural production, food distribution and economic development in the States of Gujarat, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Their joint engagement for better policies should help reduce food insecurity sustainably.

CLIMATE PROTECTION IN CITIES -... SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Climate Protection in Cities -... Solid Waste Management
more
|
Cities are important producers... of greenhouse gases and at the same time highly affected by the impact of climate change, e. g. by more frequent flooding events which lead amongst others to loss of property and a spread of diseases. Solid waste management is part of Indonesia's strategy to address climate change. The programme foresees to support investments in solid waste treatment in different Indonesian cities, which have climate impacts. Besides the investments, consulting services are foreseen to support city efforts to manage their solid waste in a sustainable way. As a complementary component, the Swiss research institute Eawag will carry out applied research to identify market opportunities for recycling of organic waste and will develop these technologies in a showcase pilot situation. Cities are important producers of greenhouse gases and at the same time highly affected by the impacts of climate change, e.g. by more frequent flooding events which lead amongst others to loss of property and a spread of diseases. Indonesia has taken up the topic of climate change and presented a strategy comprising both adaptation and mitigation measures that cities can take. Solid waste measures are mentioned amongst the activity fields for the cooperation with donors.

Construction of a new sewerage... and water supply network for Jerash refugee camp
more
|
Many Palestinian refugees in J...ordan are permanently living in what they initially thought would be temporary shelters. Their numbers continue to grow 50 years after the arrival of the first Palestinian refugees in Jordan. The absence of adequate measures to improve living conditions led to serious health issues in Jerash camp. One of the most serious problems was limited access to safe drinking water and a centralised sanitation system. The SDC launched an ambitious project to solve this problem.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Rural Development
|
In the last few years, Lao PDR... has been going through a period of unprecedented growth and change, with massive land-hungry Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese investments. This is particularly evident in the Northern Uplands, the remote and mountainous focus region of SDC support in Lao PDR, which is plagued by high incidence of poverty (52% in the uplands as compared to 20% in the lowlands) and chronic child malnutrition. The proposed program builds upon existing experiences of each donor and scales them up in initially three out of the eight provinces of the Northern Uplands of Laos. The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the coordination of the implementation of the program, done in conjunction with other line Ministries. Switzerland, as a key player in both, rural livelihoods and local planning in Lao PDR, has influenced strongly the design of the program in particular through the lessons learned from its extension, value chain and local governance projects. A joint evaluation of the first phase of the program is planned in 2013.

Morocco is a country of transi...t and destination for migrants and refugees, 20'000 of which live on the margins of society, despite Morocco in 2014 adopting a first ever migration strategy, promising the respect of human rights and access to public services. Caritas enables 3'000 vulnerable migrants per year - mainly women and children - to translate access rights into access reality, and coaches public and civil society service providers to care for the specific needs of the new clients.

In Nepal, trail bridges are vi...tal for rural mobility. Almost 80 of them were severely damaged or destroyed during the earthquakes of 2015, jeopardizing access to education, health services and local markets for thousands of inhabitants in the mountainous regions. The SDC joined the reconstruction efforts, basing its intervention on the long-standing expertise it has in the country.
