After more than three years without cases, Haiti reported on 2 October 2022 a cluster of cholera cases in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, just as the country was on the verge of being declared cholera- free.
This cholera resurgence in Haiti is happening in a complex operational context, am...id a volatile socio- political environment marked by blockades, fuel shortages, criminal gang activity and rampant insecurity. Throughout the Americas, populations are aging and the Region is undergoing a rapid demographic transition. The aging index, which reflects the size of the older age groups per 100 compared to children under age 15, clearly demonstrates the increase in people aged 60 and older. Compared to global tr...ends, the Region of the Americas will have a larger number of people aged 60 and older than children under 15 by 2030, which is approximately 25 years before the global average. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an unparalleled health crisis around the world. The impact on older persons and those with underlying health conditions has highlighted the challenges of addressing the needs of older populations during a public health emergency. Given this demographic transition it is essential to think about preparedness of systems and services to address this population’s needs, including an increase in emergency planning and protection of older populations.

WHO six-year strategy for the health sector and community capacity development.
Over a period of two decades, under-5 mortality rate in Bangladesh has declined by 66% from 133 per 1000 live births in 1993-94 to 45 per 1000 live births in 2017-18. The country reached the MDG-4 goal in the reduction of child mortality on time. However, the comparison of neonatal and under-5 morta...lity rates in Bangladesh over the same years reveals that the reduction in the neonatal mortality rate was much slower than the child mortality rate. This led to a rise in the proportion of neonatal deaths in overall under-five deaths from 40% in 1993-1994 to 67% percent in 2017-2018. More than 75% of neonatal deaths occur within the first 7 days. To achieve SDG target 3.2, Bangladesh has to further reduce under-5 mortality rate by 44% and newborn deaths by 60%. Infection is the leading cause of preventable deaths among the neonates and the young infants and the standard recommendations for treating severe bacterial infections in infants under 2 months of age include hospitalization and 7-10 days of parenteral therapy.

This document is a situation report (#6) from October 2, 2017, describing the cholera outbreak in Yemen. By October 1, 2017, there were 777,229 suspected cholera cases and 2,134 deaths across 22 of Yemen's 23 governorates. The response involves WASH partners providing hygiene supplies and water trea...tment, health cluster partners operating treatment centers, and communication campaigns reaching over 16 million people. Major challenges include limited supplies, security risks hindering access to affected communities, a weakened health system with over 55% of facilities closed or partially functional, and difficulties importing medicines and medical supplies. Children under 18 represent 60% of cases, while people over 60 report the highest death rates.
