Large-Scale UN Response Needed to Address Health and Food Crises
This report is based on interviews with more than 150 health care professionals, Venezuelans seeking or in need of medical care who recently arrived in Colombia and Brazil, representatives from international and nongovernmental humani...tarian organizations. In addition, researchers analyzed data on the situation inside Venezuela from official sources, hospitals, international and national organizations, and civil society organizations.
We found a health system in utter collapse with increased levels of maternal and infant mortality; the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles and diphtheria; and increases in numbers of infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis (TB). Although the government stopped publishing official data on nutrition in 2007, research by Venezuelan organizations and universities documents high levels of food insecurity and child malnutrition, and available data shows high hospital admissions of malnourished children.

More than 800,000 asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe by sea in 2015, with most traveling onward to northern and western EU countries. According to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, 84 percent were from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia, or Iraq – all countries experienci...ng conflict, widespread violence and insecurity, or countries with highly repressive governments. European Union governments should take urgent action to bring Europe’s response to the refugee challenge, now a full blown EU crisis, in line with their legal responsibilities and stated values.

Seng Moon’s story is typical of the 37 trafficking survivors interviewed for this report. The
most unusual part of her story is that she escaped with her child; many other survivors
were forced to leave children behind. All the survivors we interviewed were trafficked from,
and managed to retur...n to, Myanmar’s Kachin State or the northern part of neighboring
Shan State. Most were from families affected by fighting in the area between Myanmar
government forces and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and its armed wing,
the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). While the conflict dates to the independence of the
Union of Burma in 1948, the end of a 17-year ceasefire in 2011 resulted in an escalation of
hostilities that has caused the mass displacement of over 100,000 Kachin and other
ethnic minorities.

Urge una respuesta regional ante una crisis migratoria sin precedentes
This report found that many people with disabilities enter institutions as children and remain there for their entire lives. Most of these institutions visited by Human Rights Watch researchers did not provide for more than people’s basic needs, such as food and hygiene, with scarce contact with t...he community and little opportunity for personal development. Some residents are tied to their beds and given sedatives to control them.
