WHO Myanmar factsheet special, August 2018
Recently, schistosomiasis is reported also from Myanmar, viz. Rakhine State, Southern Shan State (near Lake Inle) and Bago Region. Between October 2016 and 30 June 2018, for instance, 302 cases have been diagnosed at Sittwe General Hospital.
Schistosomiasis is one of the 17 ‘neglected tropical diseases’ as classified by the World Health Organization.
In order to better understand attitudes and practices surrounding schistosomiasis, Malaria Consortium carried out a survey in Nampula province, Mozambique, where the organisation is i...mplementing a community engagement intervention with a
focus on this disease. Findings suggest a need for greater efforts to improve knowledge of schistosomiasis in affected communities
in order to increase uptake of mass drug administration and ensure that communities take appropriate measures to prevent infection.

This wo...rk suggests that 20 mg/kg of azithromycin is probably effective against yaws, but further data are needed.

In the medium and long term, however, vulnerability to both types of violence could increase, depending on the capacity of political forces to instigate and manage conflict and on their willingness to work together.

CONCLUSIONS: The roles performed by CHWs are broad, varied and essential for diabetes and hypertension management. However, basic knowledge about diabetes and hypertension remains poor while training is unstandardised and haphazard. These need to be improved if community-based NCD management is to b...e successful. The potential of peer education as a complementary mechanism to formal training needs as well as support and supervision in the workplace requires further assessment
