This briefing paper provides an overview of the approach underlying EA, how and by whom it is applied and its problems and consequences. The global burden of disease due to mental disorders continues to rise, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In addition to causing a large proportion of morbidity, mental disorders – especially severe mental disorders (SMD) – are linked with poorer health outcomes and increase...d mortality. SMD are defined as a group of conditions that include moderate to severe depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. People with SMD have a two to three times higher average mortality compared to the general population, which translates to a 10-20 year reduction in life expectancy. While people with SMD do have higher rates of death due to unnatural causes (accidents, homicide, or suicide) than the general population, the
majority of deaths amongst people with SMD are attributable to physical health conditions, both
non-communicable and communicable.

Refugee children and adolescents exhibit resilience despite a history of trauma. However, trauma can affect a refugee
child’s emotional and behavioral development. Mental health providers should consider how the refugee experience (e.g.,
exposure to hunger, thirst, and lack of shelter; injury an...d illness; being a witness, victim, or perpetrator of violence; fleeing
your home and country; separating from family; living in a refugee camp; resettling in a new country; and navigating

2nd edition. The 2018 Roadmap incorporates an additional critical population: adolescents. Despite making up 1 in 6 of the world’s people, adolescents have been largely overlooked as global momentum to address TB has grown. Spanning the ages of 10–19 years, adolescents are both at risk of TB and... represent an important population for TB control. They often present with infectious TB and frequently have multiple contacts in congregate settings, such as schools and other educational institutions. Nevertheless, few countries capture TB data in suitably age-disaggregated ways to allow full understanding of its impact in this group and even fewer provide the adolescent-friendly services our young people need to access diagnosis and care.

Conclusion: To ensure that people with disabilities can successfully access the necessary health services, the barriers on the demand side (the individuals requiring healthcare) as well as the barriers that are part of the healthcare system, should be attended to.
This exploratory study carried out in Coastal Kenya by TUM - funded and supported by CBM – draws attention to monetisable social factors in the measurement of impacts of livelihood promotion. When NGOs in development cooperation try to capture the effects of livelihood promotion programmes for the... target group (e.g. persons with disabilities) and their families, it is not enough to only look at the individual’s income or consider common business economics measurements (like Return on Investment) but to look more widely on the changes in the Quality of Life. This study tried to apply the so called Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach in the field of livelihood promotion. For this goal a general formula was developed and field-tested to account for a broad range of (social) impacts.
