More than 800,000 asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe by sea in 2015, with most traveling onward to northern and western EU countries. According to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, 84 percent were from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia, or Iraq – all countries experienci...ng conflict, widespread violence and insecurity, or countries with highly repressive governments. European Union governments should take urgent action to bring Europe’s response to the refugee challenge, now a full blown EU crisis, in line with their legal responsibilities and stated values.

Seng Moon’s story is typical of the 37 trafficking survivors interviewed for this report. The
most unusual part of her story is that she escaped with her child; many other survivors
were forced to leave children behind. All the survivors we interviewed were trafficked from,
and managed to retur...n to, Myanmar’s Kachin State or the northern part of neighboring
Shan State. Most were from families affected by fighting in the area between Myanmar
government forces and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and its armed wing,
the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). While the conflict dates to the independence of the
Union of Burma in 1948, the end of a 17-year ceasefire in 2011 resulted in an escalation of
hostilities that has caused the mass displacement of over 100,000 Kachin and other
ethnic minorities.

Some residents are tied to their beds and given sedatives to control them.

This report finds that although Lebanese law bars schools from discriminating against children with disabilities, public and private schools exclude many children with disabilities. For those allowed to enroll, schools often lack reasonable accommodations, such as modifications to the classroom envi...ronment and curricula or teaching methods to address children’s needs. Schools also require the families of children with disabilities to pay extra fees and expenses that in effect are discriminatory.

This report from Human Rights Watch found that South Africa has failed to guarantee the right to education for many of the country’s children and young adults due to widespread discrimination against children with disabilities in enrollment decisions. Human Rights Watch research in five out of Sou...th Africa’s nine provinces showed that children with disabilities face discriminatory physical and attitudinal barriers, often beginning early in children’s lives when government officials classify them according to their disabilities.
