Global cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden is high and rising, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Focussing on 45 LMICs, we aimed to determine (1) the adult population’s median 10-year predicted CVD risk, including its variation within countries by socio-demographic char...acteristics, and (2) the prevalence of self-reported blood pressure (BP) medication use among those with and without an indication for such medication as per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

The article provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence and risk factors of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It highlights that COPD is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the region, with prevalence rates ranging from 1.7% ...to 24.8% and an average pooled prevalence of 8%. The analysis points out that smoking, exposure to biomass smoke, and age are key risk factors. The study emphasizes the need for improved diagnosis and awareness, as COPD often remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in SSA. The authors call for coordinated efforts from clinicians, researchers, and policymakers to address these issues and reduce exposure to preventable risk factors.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and an inability to properly regulate blood sugar levels. The two most important risk factors for T2DM are a family history of diabetes and obesity, though age, race, diet, and exercise level also impact risk.... Common symptoms include frequent urination, nerve damage, and dark skin patches. Treatment involves lifestyle changes like diet and exercise as well as medications like metformin, which improves insulin sensitivity and decreases glucose production in the liver. Patients are counseled on managing diabetes-related risks and provided support through organizations and groups.

This guideline covers care and management for adults (aged 18 and over) with type 2 diabetes. It focuses on patient education, dietary advice, managing cardiovascular risk, managing blood glucose levels, and identifying and managing long-term complications.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is less common than type 2 diabetes mellitus but is increasing in frequency in South Africa. It tends to affect younger individuals, and upon diagnosis, exogenous insulin is essential for survival. In South Africa, the health care system is divided into private and pu...blic health care systems. The private system is well resourced, whereas the public sector, which treats more than 80% of the population, has minimal resources. There are currently no studies in South Africa, and Africa at large, that have evaluated the immediate and long-term costs of managing people living with T1DM in the public sector.

This guideline provides updated, evidence-informed guidance on the percentage of total fat in the diet to reduce the risk of unhealthy weight gain.
This guideline is intended for a wide audience involved in the development, design and implementation of policies and programmes in nutrition and pub...lic health. The World Health Organization's Regional Office for Africa webpage on diabetes provides an overview of the disease's impact in the African Region. It highlights that diabetes is a serious, chronic, and costly condition, with projections estimating cases to rise to 23.9 million by 2030. The page outl...ines risk factors such as physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, tobacco use, and diets high in unhealthy fats and calories. It is now evident that we are living in a world of diabetes pandemic—despite the scientifically sound estimates, worldwide diabetes prevalence has been exceeding even the most pessimistic projections from the past. If we go back in history, it was estimated in 2004 that diabetes prevalence in 2030... would reach 366 million people. What actually happened was that the prevalence of 366 million people with diabetes was already reached in 2011, 19 years earlier than initially predicted. According to the latest projections, there would be 578 million people with diabetes in 2030, almost 60% more of what was estimated 15 years ago.
