In this paper an attempt has been made to contextualize the ecological dimension of contemporary Catholic
social teaching. With this aim in mind, the authors discuss the merits of several theories and approaches
(political economy approaches, ecological moderni...zation theory, environmental justice theory, and social
constructionism) coming from environmental sociology and other disciplinary traditions in the social sciences.
After an analysis of relevant historical documents of Catholic social teaching with respect to the
environmental issues covered by them, the authors discuss the main lines of argument present in the recent
(2015) encyclical Laudato Si’ (Pope Francis) and interpret them in the aforementioned theoretical framework.
In conclusion, the usefulness of Catholic social teaching for the public dialogue between science and
other relevant stakeholders, as well as its main strengths and weaknesses have been discussed

Previous crises, such as the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa in 2014, indicate the direct impact movement restrictions and disease containment efforts have on food availability, access, utilization and violence – particularly gender-based violence (GBV). The importance of maintaining and ...upscaling food security interventions for the most vulnerable populations, alongside the health sector’s efforts to avert disease spread, is therefore undeniable. The COVID-19 outbreak in South Sudan threatens to paralyze an already fragile food system and negatively impact more than 6.5 million people in South Sudan who remain vulnerable. At the same time, the core national capacities for prevention, preparedness and response for public health events is limited, and the healthcare system has been weakened by years of conflict, poor governance and low investments.

Previous pandemics have demonstrated that more people could die from the indirect consequences of an outbreak than from the disease itself. As the fight against the pandemic is pushing millions into poverty and hunger, COVID-19 will likely be no different.
WHO published the first COVID-19 Strategic Response and Preparedness Plan (SPRP) on 3 February, 2020. 2020 was a year like no other. Amidst on-going humanitarian crises, largely fuelled by conflict and violence but also driven by the effects of climate change – such as the largest locust infestation in a generation – the world had to contend with a global pandemic. In less than one year (March-D...ecember 2020), more than 82 million COVID-19 cases and 1.8 million deaths were recorded. In that timeframe, out of the global COVID-19 totals, 30 per cent of COVID-19 cases and 39 per cent deaths were recorded in GHRP countries.
