Analysis of survey data looking at 25 years of progress in and the future challenges for tropical medicine and global health
This map illustrates satellite-detected, potential damaged structures in Muisne, Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. The analyzed area is located approximately 30 km north of the 16 April 2016 Muisne earthquake mainshock epicenter. This analysis is carried out using Pléiades satellite image acquired 20 A...pril 2016 and a WorldView-3 image acquired 12 March 2016. UNITAR-UNOSAT identified 450 potentially damaged structures of which 139 are destroyed, 206 severely damaged, and 105 moderately damaged. Vitamin A deficiency is a risk factor for blindness and for mortality from measles and diarrhoea in children aged 6–59 months. We aimed to estimate trends in the prevalence of vitamin A defi ciency between 1991 and 2013 and its mortality burden in low-income and middle-income countries.

A la suite de cette analyse de situation, le Ministère de la Santé à travers la Direction des Laboratoires a entrepris des actions correctives parmi lesquelles, l’élaboration d’une politique nationale en matière d’analyses de biologie médicale dont l’un des objectifs spécifiques est ...d’assurer la qualité des prestations. Nonobstant cet acquis, il reste que le Burkina Faso n’est pas doté d’un plan national qualité pour accompagner les laboratoires dans la mise en œuvre de la démarche qualité.
Le présent plan qualité vise la promotion et la mise en œuvre de la démarche qualité dans les laboratoires d’analyses de biologie médicale.

One of the most obvious ways in which to ensure impartiality in a health care system is to require impartiality of all actors in the system, i.e. to give health care professionals a duty to treat everyone impartially and to deny them the ‘right’ to give their patients preferential treatment. And... one of the possible side-effects of allowing individual health care professionals to give preference to ‘their clients’ is to create inequality in health care. This paper explores the conflict and proposes that it can be right to give preference to ‘your’ patients in certain circumstances.

Progress in tuberculosis control worldwide, including achievement of 2015 global targets, requires adequate financing sustained for many years. WHO began yearly monitoring of tuberculosis funding in 2002. We used data reported to WHO to analyse tuberculosis funding from governments and international... donors (in real terms, constant 2011 US$) and associated progress in tuberculosis control in low-income and middle-income countries between 2002 and 2011. We then assessed funding needed to 2015 and how this funding could be mobilised.

Between 2012 and 2016, development assistance for HIV/AIDS decreased by 20·0%; domestic financing is therefore critical to sustaining the response to HIV/AIDS. To understand whether domestic resources could fill the financing gaps created by declines in development assistance, we aimed to track spe...nding on HIV/AIDS and estimated the potential for governments to devote additional domestic funds to HIV/AIDS.
