If your result shows you’re at high risk for type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor about getting a simple blood sugar test to confirm it. Then, if you’re diagnosed with prediabetes, consider joining a lifestyle change program offered by the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP). Thi...s program is proven to cut the risk for type 2 diabetes in half.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and an inability to properly regulate blood sugar levels. The two most important risk factors for T2DM are a family history of diabetes and obesity, though age, race, diet, and exercise level also impact risk.... Common symptoms include frequent urination, nerve damage, and dark skin patches. Treatment involves lifestyle changes like diet and exercise as well as medications like metformin, which improves insulin sensitivity and decreases glucose production in the liver. Patients are counseled on managing diabetes-related risks and provided support through organizations and groups.

In 2014, the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) reported that the highest prevalence of symptoms of severe asthma was found in the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Nigeria. While exposure to biomass fuel use may be an important risk factor in the deve...lopment of asthma, its association with asthma symptoms severity has not been well-established. The aim of this study is to extend the spectrum of environmental risk factors that may be contributing towards increasing asthma morbidity, especially asthma symptoms severity in rural schoolchildren in Nigeria and to examine possible asthma underdiagnosis among this population.

Considerable energy has been expended over the last two decades in developing methods for identifying the presence of asthma among participants in population studies. The objective of this endeavour has commonly been to enable epidemiological research on risk factors for asthma, with the ultimate ai...m of preventing the disease. However, there are other reasons for measuring the prevalence of asthma in populations, including the desire to assess the burden of disease attributable to asthma, to track changes over time, and to compare the prevalence among population groups defined by geographical, demographic or social factors. Two major international collaborative studies arising from this work have made major contributions to our knowledge about asthma

A worldwide increase in the prevalence of asthma has been reported in recent years. With an increase in prevalence comes an increased burden of disease in terms of morbidity, mortality and compromised quality of life. The economic burden in terms of utilisation of healthcare resources and limitation... of the earning capacity of the individuals and families is an added problem. Various indicators such as disability-adjusted life years and healthy life years have been used to define the economic burden. The data from Asian countries regarding these parameters is scarce, underlining the need for systematic studies in these countries, especially those that are resource poor. The purpose of this review is to highlight the varying prevalence of asthma in Asia and to assess the likely economic burden for the future.

As part of efforts to celebrate World Asthma Day (WAD), May 2, 2023, and reduce the burden of asthma in Nigeria, the Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS) has advocated education of asthma patients and carers as an integral part of asthma care to achieve optimal control of symptoms and exacerbation.
Asthma is a common breathing condition that affects 20% of all children Asthma tends to run in families, although this is not always the case. You may have seen someone at school who uses an inhaler to help them breathe better and control asthma symptoms.
Asthma can be a serious disease, but if you understand
the disease and take the right medication to control it, you
should have no problems or symptoms due to your asthma,
even when you are pregnant. To be free from asthma
attacks, you should also check your lung function and use
an action plan... if any symptoms occur.

a "risk factor" is something that increases your chances of getting a disease or condition. In the case of asthma there are two diffrent type of risk factors. There are risk factors for developing asthma , and there are separate risk factors for those who already have asthma getting a severe asthma ...attack. We like to refer to the second as "triggers for asthma attacks" instead of "risk factors" to avoid confusion.

Asthma is a heterogeneous condition characterised by chronic inflammation and variable expiratory airflow limitation, as well as airway reversibility. The diagnosis of asthma in young children is limited by the inability to perform objective lung function testing in this group of patients and the wi...de variety of conditions that can phenotypically present with asthma-like symptoms.
This article provides an evidence-based approach for clinicians to accurately diagnose asthma in young children and to assess the level of control to guide therapeutic decisions.
The South African Childhood Asthma Working Group (SACAWG) convened in January 2017 with task groups, each headed by a section leader, constituting the editorial committee on assessment of asthma epidemiology, diagnosis, control, treatments, novel treatments and self-management plans. The asthma diagnosis and control task groups reviewed the available scientific literature and assigned evidence according to the Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system, providing recommendations based on current evidence.

Asthma is the most common chronic illness of childhood. The prevalence is rising and the mortality and morbidity from asthma are unacceptably high in South Africa. This article emphasizes the importance to make a correct diagnosis based, most importantly, on the clinical history and supported by inv...estigations. Further, the appropriate drug and device must be chosen to achieve good asthma control. It explains that patients must be followed up regularly and their asthma control must be assessed so that the treatment can then be adjusted according to the level of control. Additionally, Asthma education and adherence are important components of management of the condition.

The increasing prevalence of childhood asthma in the developed world is a cause for concern. A so-called Western lifestyle has been the factor most commonly cited to explain this worrying increase in asthma prevalence. Early studies in a limited number of African countries showed a very low rural pr...evalence of childhood asthma, especially where children lived according to a traditional lifestyle. These same studies showed that asthma was not uncommon in urbanized African children. There has been an
increasing tendency over the past 20 years for those in rural communities to move to the large urban centers. This article analyses the urban-rural differences and factors that influence the development of asthma in susceptible children.
