Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease, caused by monkeypox virus, recognized as the most important orthopoxvirus infection after the eradication of smallpox.
This course offers public health officers and health workers in-depth information to understand the epidemiology, modes of transmission, clin...ical presentation, diagnostics, and treatment of monkeypox, as well as the strategies needed for effective prevention and outbreak investigation and response.

Dengue creates a staggering epidemiological and economic burden for endemic countries. Without a specific therapy and with a commercial vaccine that presents some problems relative to its full effectiveness, initiatives to improve vector... control strategies, early disease diagnostics and the development of vaccines and antiviral drugs are priorities. In this study, we present the probable origins of dengue in America and the trajectories of its spread. Overall, dengue diagnostics are costly, making the monitoring of dengue epidemiology more difficult and affecting physicians’ therapeutic decisions regarding dengue patients, especially in developing countries. This review also highlights some recent and important findings regarding dengue in Brazil and the Americas. We also summarize the existing DENV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic tests to provide an improved reference since these tests are useful and accurate at discriminating DENV from other flaviviruses that co-circulate in the Americas. Additionally, these DENV PCR assays ensure virus serotyping, enabling epidemiologic monitoring.

Dengue Epidemiology
The first record of a case of probable dengue fever is in a Chinese medical encyclopedia from the Jin Dynasty (265–420 AD) which referred to a “water poison” associated with flying insects. The first recognized Dengue epidemics occurred almost simultaneously in Asia, Afr...ica, and North America in the 1780s, shortly after the identification and naming of the disease in 1779. The first confirmed case report dates from 1789 and is by Benjamin Rush, who coined the term "breakbone fever" because of the symptoms of myalgia and arthralgia.

Dengue is the fastest spreading, mosquito-borne viral infectious disease worldwide, with remarkable morbidity and mortality. In the past decades, profound contributions have been made towards understanding its epidemiology, including disease burden and distributions, risk factors, and control and pr...evention practices. Dengue continues to disseminate to new areas, including high latitude regions, and a new serotype (dengue virus serotype 5) has been identified. Vaccine research has made new progress, in which the licensed yellow fever and dengue virus quadrivalent chimeric vaccine is now under further safety assessment. In disease surveillance, because of its operational simplicity, rapidity, capability, and utility as an indicator of disease severity, dengue virus NS1 antigen detection has great promotion and application value among primary health care institutions. Vector control progress has driven new breakthroughs in biotechnology, including Wolbachia-infected Aedes and genetically modified Aedes. Both Aedes variants have been used to block transmission of the dengue virus through population replacement and suppression. In the future, vector control should still be pursued as a key measure to prevent transmission, along with anti-viral drug and vaccine research.

Mycetoma is a specific chronic, granulomatous, inflammatory disease. It usually involves the subcutaneous tissue, most probably after traumatic inoculation of the causative organism. It has a prolonged, progressive, and indolent course, and, if untreated, it ultimately leads to destruction of the de...eper tissues and bone, resulting in deformity and disability that may necessitate amputation of the affected parts with all the social and economic implications of this. The disease is characterized by tumefaction, draining sinuses, and the presence of grains.
