Antimicrobial resistance represents a big threat to public health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that every year two million Americans are infected with a (multi-)drug resistant bacterium, resulting in 23,000 deaths. The WHO has repeatedly drawn attention to this major health issue. In the worst-case scenario, we will shortly run out of effective antibiotics. Surgery and cancer therapy will then become very dangerous due to the risk of infection associated with such treatments. (Organ) transplantation will become close to impossible as the immunosuppression necessary for transplant patients makes them highly vulnerable to infections. Some infections we can easily treat today could turn deadly. It is therefore conceivable that infectious diseases once again become the leading cause of death as in early 20th century

Antimicrobial agents play an indispensable role in animal health and welfare management. At the same time, the need for prudent use is obvious to ensure good food safety outcomes and to manage the potential risk of antimicrobial resistance. The emergence of multi-resistant bacteria is posing challenges to health professionals and communities around the world for both human and animal health. These bacteria are not destroyed by the common antimicrobial agents and so pose a risk to people, particularly children, the elderly and those with poorly functioning immune systems, as well as to animals. Throughout the years, the dairy sector has been very much aware of the need for responsible use and has, in many countries, implemented adequate measures throughout the dairy supply chain

In Vietnam, most of the examination and treatment facilities are facing with of spread of bacteria resistant to many antibiotics. The level and speed of drug resistance are increasing, at alarming level. The burden of drug resistance is increasing due to the increasing cost of treatment, prolonged treatment,. That will affect patients’ health, community and social development. In the future, many nations will be able to face the possibility of having no effective drugs to treat infectious diseases if they do not make appropriate interventions

Η ανακάλυψη πριν από 80 περίπου χρόνια ότι ουσίες που παράγονται από μύκητες ή βακτήρια μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν θεραπευτικά για την ίαση διαφόρων λοιμώξεων, έφερε επανάσταση στα τότε ιατρικά δεδομένα. Οι λοιμώδεις νόσοι αποτελούσαν τότε την πρώτη αιτία θανάτου για κάθε ηλικιακή ομάδα. Το γεγονός αυτό ανατράπηκε με την έναρξη της χρήσης των ουσιών αυτών, που ονομάστηκαν αντιβιοτικά λόγω της ιδιότητας τους να καταστρέφουν τα μικρόβια. Έκτοτε εκατομμύρια ζωές έχουν σωθεί με τη χορήγηση αντιβιοτικών για την αντιμετώπιση σοβαρών λοιμώξεων. Σήμερα, οκτώ δεκαετίες μετά, οι πολύτιμες αυτές για τον άνθρωπο ουσίες χάνουν με συνεχώς επιταχυνόμενο ρυθμό την αποτελεσματικότητά τους λόγω επίτασης του φαινομένου της Μικροβιακής Αντοχής στα αντιβιοτικά

This guidance document is based on research of social media activity related to antibiotic use at EU level, as well as on a survey of the social media activities of EAAD partner organisations, mostly EU umbrella organisations of patients and health professionals. The research showed that there is already some social media activity on prudent antibiotic use and that a few potential influencers are emerging. Similarly, the survey of the EU-wide partners of EAAD showed that respondents are becoming active on social media platforms

Ce document d'orientation est basé sur une recherche sur les activités des médias sociaux liées à l'utilisation des antibiotiques au niveau de l'UE, ainsi que sur une enquête sur les activités des médias sociaux des organisations partenaires de l'EAAD, principalement des organisations de patients et de professionnels de la santé de l'UE. La recherche a montré qu'il existe déjà une certaine activité des médias sociaux sur l'utilisation prudente des antibiotiques et que quelques influenceurs potentiels apparaissent. De même, l'enquête menée auprès des partenaires de l'EAAD à l'échelle de l'UE a montré que les personnes interrogées deviennent actives sur les plateformes de médias sociaux

Este documento de orientación se basa en la investigación de la actividad de los medios sociales relacionados con el uso de antibióticos a nivel de la UE, así como en una encuesta sobre las actividades de los medios sociales de las organizaciones asociadas a la EAAD, en su mayoría organizaciones paraguas de la UE de pacientes y profesionales de la salud. La investigación demostró que ya existe cierta actividad en los medios sociales sobre el uso prudente de los antibióticos y que están surgiendo algunos posibles influenciadores. Análogamente, la encuesta de los asociados de la EAAD en toda la UE mostró que los encuestados están empezando a participar activamente en las plataformas de los medios sociales

Le présent plan prend la suite de deux plans nationaux pour préserver l’efficacité des antibiotiques (2001-2005 et 2007-2010), qui visaient à maîtriser et rationaliser la prescription des antibiotiques. Ce troisième plan a pour titre « plan national 2011-2016 d’alerte sur les antibiotiques ». Derrière ce titre se profile une menace de santé publique majeure : un nombre croissant de situations d’impasse thérapeutique contre des infections bactériennes, du fait du développement des résistances aux antibiotiques. Cette menace appelle une mobilisation déterminée et durable de l’ensemble des acteurs impliqués dans le cycle de vie des antibiotiques, afin de concilier des objectifs individuels (qualité de la prise en charge des patients) et collectifs (préservation d’une ressource rare, précieuse et difficile à renouveler)

The toolkit offers advice on how national public health authorities could engage with primary care prescribers so as to promote appropriate and responsible use of antibiotics. The toolkit contains template materials and some suggested key messages for health professionals, ideas for awareness raising activities, and suggested tactics for getting the messages across to both primary care providers and patients regarding prudent use of antibiotics
