Improving the availability of poisons centre services in Eastern Africa: highlights from a feasibility study for a subregional poison centre in the Eastern Africa Subregion, including a toolkit on set

This report summarises a project that assessed the feasibility of establishing a subregional poison centre in Eastern Africa. The project was conducted from 2012 to 2013 under the SAICM Quick Start Programme. The project covered 16 countries and addressed the region’s limited access to poison centres, despite the high incidence of poisoning, including that caused by pesticides and snakebites. Project activities included a literature review and stakeholder consultations via surveys and workshops. The findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated poison control services to support public health and meet the requirements of the International Health Regulations (2005).
