This project aims to reduce po...verty by training up to 200 male and female indigenous youth, aged between 15 and 44, living in the poorest communities of Chiloé, Chile. It helps these youth become more employable and self-sufficient by establishing a rural training centre—the Wekimum Rural Training Centre—where they can access training programs based on their needs. Skills learned by trainees are intended to help them establish healthy, sustainable, and dignified livelihoods; contribute productively to local governance and community development; and re-establish their confidence and pride in indigenous identity and traditional knowledge. Youth acquire skills in how to make a living in rural areas, resource management, business development, and general life skills. Through the Wekimum Rural Training Centre, the project proposes to leave a legacy of effective training infrastructure, high quality curricula, and programming developed from the fusion of Chilote and Canadian knowledge.

Southeast Asia is undergoing r...apid agricultural intensification affecting crops, livestock and plantation forestry. Such agricultural change can be good for human health by improving food security, nutrition and income. However, intensification can also increase the risk of disease, exposure to agro-chemicals and loss of biodiversity. This grant will allow a consortium of research centres in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam to carry out research, capacity building, policy advocacy and networking on the links between changing agricultural practices and human health. At the same time, the consortium will endeavour to strengthen the emerging field of Ecohealth research and practice in Southeast Asia.

Ecohealth Field-building Leade...rship Initiative in Southeast Asia
more
|

NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY IN... RURAL CHINA: AN ASSESSMENT OF SCHOOL FEEDING SYSTEM
more
|
Nutrition and food security in... rural China: An assessment of school feeding system
more
|
The school feeding system in C...hina provides 180 to 200 days of meals a year to rural children from economically disadvantaged provinces that have a high incidence of malnutrition. The program covers 14 provinces, 100 counties, and over three million children. In order to make policy adjustments and expand the benefits to other low-income areas of the country, it is essential to measure the impact of the system. The purpose of this study is to assess China's school feeding system under its National Nutrition Improvement Plan to better understand the system's impact on rural students, local food security, and sustainable economic growth. Researchers will assess the quality of the meals and nutrient intake by children aged seven to 15 in relation to their health and nutritional status, school attendance, and educational outcomes. Economic impact on local communities will be monitored to understand if and how the system affects local food production, procurement, and employment, particularly for women. To improve the potential impacts of the system on nutritional outcomes, additional interventions (including nutrition education and capacity development for women and men) will be introduced in a selected number of schools over a period of two years, and their impact will be evaluated. The project will be led by the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) in collaboration with several strategic participating institutions, including the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Food Program, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, Microsoft, Amway Charity Foundation, and the Capital Healthcare and Nutrition Cuisine Society. Although the research focuses on China, results and outcomes have the potential to be used widely in other countries in Asia where school feeding programs are an entry point to target food security, nutrition, and school performance among school-aged children.

SCALING UP THE PRODUCTION OF M...ORE NUTRITIOUS YELLOW POTATOES IN COLOMBIA (CIFSRF PHASE 2)
more
|
Scaling Up the Production of M...ore Nutritious Yellow Potatoes in Colombia (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
This project aims to alleviate... food insecurity and malnutrition in Colombia. Researchers will scale up improved yellow potato varieties that -yield 15% more than other varieties -are twice as resistant to late blight disease -contain double the amount of protein -have nearly 20% more iron and zinc than the most cultivated Colombian variety The project will deliver these innovations to farmers for production and make them available to consumers across Colombia. Improving crops, increasing food security To help ensure that people widely adopt the improved potato varieties, the project team will plan targeted agricultural training, food security interventions, and national awareness raising campaigns. They will also explore synergies with the government's efforts and larger agricultural projects. Researchers expect that the new potatoes will be well received in the market. Project leadership This is a partnership between the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia) and McGill University, which developed the improved varieties. To ensure large-scale adoption and impact, researchers will bring in third party public and private sector organizations, including ASOGADAN, Campo Vivo (McCain), Nutreo, and Fucom. These groups will help market the new varieties, and ensure that the project implementation takes a gender sensitive approach. The team will also collaborate with the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (Colombian Agrarian Institute), Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Colombian Family Welfare Institute, and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to ensure national endorsement and uptake of the innovations on a broad scale. Over a 28-month period, the project team will develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive scaling up model to replace at least 50% of total yellow potato production with the new varieties. The initiative will benefit at least 1.5 million consumers. Project funding This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), an IDRC program undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada).

YOUTH AGRIPRENEURS: EXPANDING ...OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH IN AGRO-PROCESSING BUSINESS IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
more
|
Youth Agripreneurs: Expanding ...Opportunities for Youth in Agro-processing Business in the Democratic Republic of Congo
more
|
Unlocking entrepreneurship and... agri-business opportunities is critical for agricultural transformation and youth employment in Africa. This project will identify, develop, and field test creative and bold business models to help youth entrepreneurs in the Democratic Republic of Congo develop profitable agri-business enterprises for post-conflict countries. Research to improve young lives Much of the available evidence on youth employment lacks country context and is not specific to agricultural product value chains. Most studies simply offer a diagnostic of the problems and challenges. Very few have invested in developing and testing practical solutions and business models to improve the lives of young people. This project will test business models that move products (i.e., soybean- and cassava-based products) to commercial ventures. It will help young women and men (youth agripreneurs, or entrepreneurs in agriculture) to -acquire business skills -identify and access better market opportunities -develop and promote small agri-business to increase real incomes -accumulate capital -enhance their capabilities Collaborative approach This 12-month collaborative action research project will involve micro-finance and business-oriented organizations, development organizations, local universities, and an international agricultural research centre. Project activities The research team will aim to -analyze and understand the social, institutional, and marketing challenges, prospects, and opportunities for promoting youth engagement in agro-processing businesses -establish and stimulate demand for new cassava- and soybean-based products, and establish effective market linkages -build skills and knowledge among aspiring youth entrepreneurs -develop and test practical business plans and pilot them using viable agripreneur platforms -use the results to support large-scale youth employment programs in agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond

Fighting Lethal Yellowing Dise...ase for Coconut Farmers (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
Yellowing disease continues to... threaten coconut crops and farmers' incomes in Côte d'Ivoire. This research project will offer research and policy recommendations to deal with the problem. Coconut crops critical to livelihoods In Côte d'Ivoire, coconut is cultivated on approximately 50,000 hectares (1 hectare to 5 farmers). Farmers produce approximately 45,000 tons of copra per year. Copra is the dried kernel of the coconut, which is used to extract coconut oil. Coconut is the main income source for the coastal region's poor farmers. Over the past 10 years, Côte d'Ivoire lethal yellowing disease has destroyed more than 350 hectares of coconut and caused losses of 12,000 tons of copra per year. The disease has negatively affected farmers' income and family nutrition in the coastal regions, and is threatening to reach Ghana's coconut plantations. It is becoming a global problem. Understanding lethal yellowing disease The project will: -map the geographic extent of the disease; -identify distinct local vectors and secondary plant hosts; -characterize and compare local strains with African and Caribbean strains of the disease; and -develop effective, practical disease management strategies. The project team will make evidence-based policy recommendations to inform replanting, breeding, and disease prevention policies at the national and regional levels. The project will build local research capacity for: -diagnostic tests -field and lab-based disease detection techniques -quarantine surveillance capabilities Locals will learn to authenticate adapted resistant or tolerant coconut cultivars for replanting, breeding, and certification programs. The project team will develop and test science-based practices to allow women and men farmers to effectively manage the disease. The project will be implemented by a public-private research partnership led by the Marc Delorme Research Station - National Centre for Agronomic Research, the Université Nangui Abrogoua in Côte d'Ivoire, and Sporometrics in Canada.

Fighting Lethal Yellowing Dise...ase for Coconut Farmers (CIFSRF Phase 2)

The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission.

more
|

The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.
