The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF. / Le projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des femmes et des filles au moyen de politiques fondées sur des données probantes et tenant compte des sexospécificités ainsi qu'au moyen de recommandations en matière de programmes visant à soutenir et à étendre la portée d'innovations qui favorisent la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle. Le projet passe en revue et tire des leçons de l'expérience des sous-projets financés par le Fonds canadien de recherche sur la sécurité alimentaire internationale (FCRSAI) dans le cadre de la phase 2, en accordant une attention particulière à la viabilité et aux perspectives d'expansion des sous-projets ainsi qu'à leur impact positif sur l'autonomisation des femmes et l'égalité des sexes. Les données sont recueillies au moyen de visites sur le terrain dans six des sous-projets financés par le FCRSAI, d'entrevues avec les chefs de sous-projets et de l'examen des documents secondaires d'autres projets du portefeuille des 18 sous-projets financés par le FCRSAI. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. In Ethiopia, Amref Canada is collaborating with Amref Ethiopia and Christian Children's Fund Ethiopia; in Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, Amref Canada is working with their local offices./Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans certaines communautés en travaillant avec les autorités sanitaires locales, en soutenant l'utilisation de l'approche intégrée axée sur la santé, la nutrition et de l'eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène.Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) la formation du personnel de santé et des agents de santé communautaires sur la prestation de services de reproduction et de santé maternelle et infantile, et sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'hygiène et d'assainissement; 2) la remise à neuf ou de réhabilitation ciblés des établissements de santé; 3) l'achat et la livraison de l'équipement essentiels, de fournitures et de médicaments aux établissements de santé; et 4) fourniture de la formation et d'équipements aux agents de santé communautaires pour promouvoir des pratiques nutritionnelles et d'hygiène améliorées au niveau des ménages. The project aims to support th...e World Food Programme (WFP) in the fight against hunger. WFP is partnering with the private sector, agriculture producers, African governments and other stakeholders to support the establishment of commercially sustainable factories in Ethiopia and Rwanda to produce Supercereal Plus, a fortified cereal that responds specifically to the nutritional needs of children aged 6-24 months.Project activities include: (1) purchasing Supercereal Plus from the three factories for five years to be used for WFP operations; and (2) using Supercereal Plus a locally-produced product in its nutrition programmes in 11 African countries./Le projet vise à soutenir le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) dans la lutte contre la faim. Le PAM travaille en partenariat avec le secteur privé, les producteurs agricoles, les gouvernements africains et d'autres intervenants pour faciliter l'établissement, en Éthiopie et au Rwanda, d'usines viables sur le plan commercial qui produiront la Supercéréale Plus, céréale enrichie qui répond aux besoins nutritionnels des enfants âgés de 6 à 24 mois.Les activités du projet comprennent : (1) l'achat de Supercéréale Plus aux trois usines pendant cinq ans, en vue de son utilisation dans le cadre des activités du PAM; et (2) l'utilisation de Supercéréale Plus, produite localement, dans 11 pays africains dans le cadre des programmes de nutrition du PAM.

The Agricultural Growth Progra...m II project aims to increase agricultural production and productivity and better link smallholder farmers to markets. The AGP II project also aims to contribute to improved nutritional status by diversifying and improving dietary consumption. AGP II project's main components focus on: (1) agricultural research and dissemination to increase productivity; (2) support to public agricultural services (extension services) to increase their access to more farmers; (3) small scale irrigation for increased production, including of fruits/vegetable with high nutritional values; and (4) agricultural marketing, value chain development and agri-business for improved market access. AGP II is expected to reach 1.6 million farmers (40% women).Activities include: (1) supporting the production of 6,290 quintals of breeder seeds for major crop varieties; releasing 280 new technologies to reach farmers; (2) construction/rehabilitation and equipping of 2,800 farmers training centers established at the village level and 800 animal health clinics; (3) rehabilitation and upgrading of small scale irrigation schemes or establishment of new ones with 55,000 ha for 230,000 farmers provided with irrigated water; (4) support to 3,200 commercially oriented smallholder farmers group to develop and implement their business plans, including through the provision of equipment and inputs, establishment of market centers and development of linkages between value-chain participants./ Ce projet représente l'appui du Canada à la mise en œuvre du Programme de croissance agricole par le gouvernement de l'Éthiopie – phase II, qui est conçu pour accroître la production agricole et la productivité et resserrer les liens entre les petits exploitants agricoles et les marchés. Le Programme de croissance agricole – phase II a aussi pour objectif de contribuer à améliorer l'état nutritionnel des personnes en diversifiant et en améliorant la consommation alimentaire. Les principaux volets du Programme sont axés sur : 1) la recherche agricole et la diffusion des résultats obtenus pour accroître la productivité; 2) le soutien aux services agricoles publics (p. ex. des services de vulgarisation) pour en élargir l'accès à davantage d'agriculteurs; 3) l'irrigation à petite échelle pour accroître la production, entre autres celle de fruits et de légumes à valeur nutritionnelle élevée; 4) la commercialisation agricole, le développement de la chaîne de valeur et l'établissement d'agroentreprises pour élargir l'accès au marché. The Agricultural Growth Progra...m II project aims to increase agricultural production and productivity and better link smallholder farmers to markets. The AGP II project also aims to contribute to improved nutritional status by diversifying and improving dietary consumption. AGP II project's main components focus on: (1) agricultural research and dissemination to increase productivity; (2) support to public agricultural services (extension services) to increase their access to more farmers; (3) small scale irrigation for increased production, including of fruits/vegetable with high nutritional values; and (4) agricultural marketing, value chain development and agri-business for improved market access. October 2016 - As a result of ...a particularly strong El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean, Ethiopia is facing its worst food security crisis in thirty years. Failed rains in many areas of southern and eastern Ethiopia throughout 2015 left more than 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance, a massive increase from 2.9 million people at the beginning of the year. Malnutrition rates have also risen, with at least 400,000 children expected to require treatment for severe acute malnutrition in 2016. In addition, access to safe water, particularly in rural areas, continues to decline, leading to widespread livestock deaths and the threat of outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as cholera. Depending on events, the situation is expected to remain critical until May of 2017.With GAC's support, Oxfam is working to meet the immediate humanitarian needs of an estimated 81,600 drought-affected people in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia. Through the repair or rehabilitation of water sources, Oxfam is improving access to safe water for both human and animal use. In addition, cash for work opportunities and livelihoods support are helping beneficiaries to meet their basic needs while also building household and community resilience in the face of future shocks./Octobre 2016 – Du fait du phénomène El Niño qui est particulièrement puissant dans l'océan Pacifique, l'Éthiopie doit faire face à la pire crise de sécurité alimentaire du pays en trente ans. En raison de la pénurie de pluie qui a frappé de nombreuses régions du sud et de l'est de l'Éthiopie tout au long de 2015, plus de 10 millions de personnes ont aujourd'hui besoin d'une aide alimentaire d'urgence comparativement à 2,9 millions de personnes au début de l'année, ce qui représente une hausse vertigineuse. Les taux de malnutrition ont également augmenté et l'on s'attend à ce qu'au moins 400 000 enfants aient besoin de se faire traiter pour malnutrition grave aiguë au début de 2016. En outre, l'accès à de l'eau potable, plus particulièrement dans les régions rurales, poursuit son déclin, ce qui provoque la mort d'une grande partie du bétail et la menace d'épidémies de maladies d'origine hydrique comme le choléra. Selon les événements qui se produiront, la situation devrait demeurer critique jusqu'en mai 2017.Grâce au soutien d'AMC, Oxfam Canada s'emploie à répondre aux besoins humanitaires immédiats d'environ 81 600 personnes touchées par la sécheresse dans la région de Somali, dans l'est de l'Éthiopie. Par la réparation ou la remise en état des sources d'eau, Oxfam améliore l'accès à de l'eau potable, tant pour les êtres humains que pour le bétail. This grant represents Canada's... institutional support to the World Economic Forum (WEF). The WEF uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. WEF's Global Challenge on Food Security and Agriculture (Global Challenge) and its regional platform Grow Asia are facilitating multi-stakeholder partnerships and mobilizing investments that contribute to food security, nutrition and agricultural growth.The Global Challenge is a global platform for leaders and stakeholders to collaborate, promote high-level engagement and support strategic actions in the agriculture sector. Activities under the Global Challenge include: (1) launching the Global Agenda Trustees on Food Security and Agriculture; (2) promoting innovation and best practices through the Global Platform for Transformative Partnerships in Agriculture; and (3) expanding multi-stakeholder partnerships at the regional and country levels.Grow Asia supports regional efforts to engage the private sector and identify opportunities for collaboration to help 10 million smallholder farmers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region increase farm productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability by 20% by 2020. Activities under Grow Asia include: (1) establishing a Grow Asia Secretariat; (2) convening stakeholders and brokering four country-level platforms in Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma and the Philippines; (3) supporting innovation within each of the four country-level platforms; and (4) reporting and sharing progress of each of the four country-level platforms./ Cette subvention constitue l'appui institutionnel du Canada au Forum économique mondial (FEM). This grant represents Canada's... institutional support to the World Economic Forum (WEF). The WEF uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. WEF's Global Challenge on Food Security and Agriculture (Global Challenge) and its regional platform Grow Asia are facilitating multi-stakeholder partnerships and mobilizing investments that contribute to food security, nutrition and agricultural growth.The Global Challenge is a global platform for leaders and stakeholders to collaborate, promote high-level engagement and support strategic actions in the agriculture sector. Activities under the Global Challenge include: (1) launching the Global Agenda Trustees on Food Security and Agriculture; (2) promoting innovation and best practices through the Global Platform for Transformative Partnerships in Agriculture; and (3) expanding multi-stakeholder partnerships at the regional and country levels.Grow Asia supports regional efforts to engage the private sector and identify opportunities for collaboration to help 10 million smallholder farmers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region increase farm productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability by 20% by 2020. Activities under Grow Asia include: (1) establishing a Grow Asia Secretariat; (2) convening stakeholders and brokering four country-level platforms in Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma and the Philippines; (3) supporting innovation within each of the four country-level platforms; and (4) reporting and sharing progress of each of the four country-level platforms./ Cette subvention constitue l'appui institutionnel du Canada au Forum économique mondial (FEM). Le FEM utilise ces fonds, ainsi que ceux d'autres donateurs, pour la réalisation de son mandat. The research project aims to s...trengthen evidence to inform policies and practices to reduce poverty and vulnerability of women and girls in poor communities. The research focuses on women's economic empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health. It seeks to identify harmful or discriminatory social norms and examine how they constrain women and girls' potential by increasing social exclusion, poverty and vulnerability. The research findings, which are shared with local communities, governments, research organizations and civil society organizations, identify effective measures in policies and programs that would mitigate or remove discriminatory social norms and strengthen women and girls' empowerment and gender equality. The research findings contribute to the Advancing Learning and Innovation on Gender Norms program, and the Gender Adolescence: Global Evidence program. This project is designed to contribute to research and knowledge sharing./Le projet de recherche vise à renforcer les données probantes pour orienter les politiques et les pratiques pour réduire la pauvreté et la vulnérabilité des femmes et des filles dans les collectivités pauvres. La recherche se concentre sur le renforcement du pouvoir économique, et la santé sexuelle et reproductive des femmes. Elle vise à déterminer les normes sociales nuisibles ou discriminatoires et à examiner la façon dont ces normes limitent le potentiel des femmes et des filles en intensifiant l'exclusion sociale, la pauvreté et la vulnérabilité. This project seeks to enhance ...food security or access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, reduce poverty, and create sustainable livelihoods through agro-ecological farming. Agro-ecological farming applies ecological principles to the design and management of sustainable agriculture systems that may be based on traditional knowledge or alternative agriculture. The project beneficiaries are 2,100 subsistence farmers in the Gambia and 900 in Senegal living in ten vulnerable agrarian communities, as well as 9,000 subsistence farmers located in surrounding communities.Some specific project objectives include: (i) training rural communities in Community Based Organisation and Participatory Planning for sustainable community development; (ii) developing the use of resource-efficient ecological farming methods and systems by women and men; and (iii) improving women and men farmers' food security, nutrition and ability to earn a living by improving access to better plant material resources for food, fodder and soil management. This project is harmonized with national development and poverty reduction strategies, including the Gambian and Senegal Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers, the Gambian Vision 2020, the Senegalese Food Security Strategy, and national objectives relating to agriculture and food security.The local partners for this project are the Agency of Village Support(AVISU) in the Gambia and the Cadre Locale de Concertation des Organisation de Producteurs (CLCOP) in Senegal./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire ou l'accès à des aliments sains, nutritifs et en quantité suffisante, à réduire la pauvreté et à créer des modes de subsistance durables au moyen d'une agriculture agroécologique. Ce type d'agriculture applique des principes écologiques à la conception et à la gestion de systèmes agricoles durables, principes qui peuvent être basés sur des connaissances traditionnelles ou une agriculture alternative. This project seeks to enhance ...food security or access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, reduce poverty, and create sustainable livelihoods through agro-ecological farming. Agro-ecological farming applies ecological principles to the design and management of sustainable agriculture systems that may be based on traditional knowledge or alternative agriculture. The project beneficiaries are 2,100 subsistence farmers in the Gambia and 900 in Senegal living in ten vulnerable agrarian communities, as well as 9,000 subsistence farmers located in surrounding communities.Some specific project objectives include: (i) training rural communities in Community Based Organisation and Participatory Planning for sustainable community development; (ii) developing the use of resource-efficient ecological farming methods and systems by women and men; and (iii) improving women and men farmers' food security, nutrition and ability to earn a living by improving access to better plant material resources for food, fodder and soil management. This project is harmonized with national development and poverty reduction strategies, including the Gambian and Senegal Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers, the Gambian Vision 2020, the Senegalese Food Security Strategy, and national objectives relating to agriculture and food security.The local partners for this project are the Agency of Village Support(AVISU) in the Gambia and the Cadre Locale de Concertation des Organisation de Producteurs (CLCOP) in Senegal./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire ou l'accès à des aliments sains, nutritifs et en quantité suffisante, à réduire la pauvreté et à créer des modes de subsistance durables au moyen d'une agriculture agroécologique. Ce type d'agriculture applique des principes écologiques à la conception et à la gestion de systèmes agricoles durables, principes qui peuvent être basés sur des connaissances traditionnelles ou une agriculture alternative. Les bénéficiaires du projet sont 2 100 agriculteurs de subsistance en Gambie et 900 au Sénégal qui vivent dans dix collectivités agricoles vulnérables, ainsi que 9 000 agriculteurs de subsistance vivant dans des collectivités avoisinantes.Parmi les objectifs précis du projet : i) former des collectivités rurales à l'organisation communautaire et à la planification participative au service du développement communautaire durable; ii) faire en sorte que les femmes et les hommes utilisent davantage des méthodes et des systèmes agricoles écologiques et économes en ressources; iii) améliorer la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition pour les femmes et les hommes et la capacité de ces derniers de gagner leur vie, en accroissant l'accès à du matériel végétal amélioré pour la nourriture, le fourrage et la gestion des sols. Yellowing disease continues to... threaten coconut crops and farmers' incomes in Côte d'Ivoire. This research project will offer research and policy recommendations to deal with the problem. Coconut crops critical to livelihoods In Côte d'Ivoire, coconut is cultivated on approximately 50,000 hectares (1 hectare to 5 farmers). Farmers produce approximately 45,000 tons of copra per year. Copra is the dried kernel of the coconut, which is used to extract coconut oil. Coconut is the main income source for the coastal region's poor farmers. Over the past 10 years, Côte d'Ivoire lethal yellowing disease has destroyed more than 350 hectares of coconut and caused losses of 12,000 tons of copra per year. The disease has negatively affected farmers' income and family nutrition in the coastal regions, and is threatening to reach Ghana's coconut plantations. It is becoming a global problem. Understanding lethal yellowing disease The project will: -map the geographic extent of the disease; -identify distinct local vectors and secondary plant hosts; -characterize and compare local strains with African and Caribbean strains of the disease; and -develop effective, practical disease management strategies. The project team will make evidence-based policy recommendations to inform replanting, breeding, and disease prevention policies at the national and regional levels. The project will build local research capacity for: -diagnostic tests -field and lab-based disease detection techniques -quarantine surveillance capabilities Locals will learn to authenticate adapted resistant or tolerant coconut cultivars for replanting, breeding, and certification programs. The project team will develop and test science-based practices to allow women and men farmers to effectively manage the disease. The project will be implemented by a public-private research partnership led by the Marc Delorme Research Station - National Centre for Agronomic Research, the Université Nangui Abrogoua in Côte d'Ivoire, and Sporometrics in Canada.

This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

This project will improve the ...efficiency of agricultural extension services by scaling up enhanced information and communication technology-enabled (ICT) extension service models in Ghana. In Africa, agricultural extension services have the potential to grow markets and enhance food security for smallholder farmers. Agricultural extension uses scientific research to educate farmers and improve agricultural practices. Improving market opportunities for farmers The Government of Ghana is looking for alternatives to conventional extension services to ensure better outreach to poor farmers and rural women. The expansion of mobile technology will connect farmers to extension resources and link them to profitable markets. The research team will scale up an ICT-based agricultural extension service developed by Farm Radio International and Grameen Foundation. The project will reach 300,000 smallholder farmers in Ghana within two years. Researchers expect that 60,000 farmers using this service will adopt productivity-enhancing innovations to increase their yields by 49%, and access better markets to improve their income. The research will establish the conditions for scaling up, profitability, and long-term sustainability of a private sector led ICT-enabled extension service. The project team will test the economic viability of this service using six value chains in three regions of Ghana. It will then design a business model to adapt the ICT solution from a participatory communication tool to a commercially viable product in the hands of private businesses. The project will speed up adoption of improved agricultural technologies, resulting in significant improvements in food security and nutrition, increased productivity, greater supply quality, and reduced cost in reaching farmers. Project funding This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada).

This project seeks to ensure t...hat poor smallholder farmers and their families in Northern Ghana have enough nutritious food to eat throughout the year. It helps smallholder farmers increase the amount of food they produce and get a good price for their crops. The project works with farmers' cooperatives to provide farmers with training in cultivating alternative crops, marketing, and business management. Through the cooperatives, the project also helps farmers to gain access to drought-resistant seed varieties, tools, crop storage facilities, and farm equipment such as tillers and tractors. The project works with credit unions to provide farmers with access to loans, so that they can invest in their farms. This support makes it possible for some of the smallholder farmers to eventually make the step into commercial farming./ Ce projet vise à assurer que les petits agriculteurs pauvres du nord du Ghana et leurs familles ont assez de nourriture de bonne qualité à manger tout au long de l'année. Le projet aide les petits agriculteurs à accroître la quantité de nourriture produite et à la commercialiser à bon prix. Par l'entremise d'un appui aux coopératives agricoles, ce projet offre aux fermiers de la formation en cultures de remplacement, en marketing et en gestion d'entreprise. Cette appui leur donne également un accès à des semences résistantes à la sécheresse, à des outils, à des installations d'entreposage de récoltes ainsi que à de l'équipement agricole tel des cultivateurs et des tracteurs. En travaillant avec des caisses d'épargne, le projet permet aux fermiers d'obtenir des prêts en vue d'investir dans leurs fermes. Cet appui permet à certains d'entre eux de franchir le pas éventuellement vers une exploitation commerciale.

Through partnerships with loca...l organizations, the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) expects to help farmers in the Upper West Region overcome constraints and become viable economic partners. MEDA seeks to provide ongoing training, capacity building and mentoring of Ghanaian government agencies (District Assemblies, Regional Planning and Coordination Units, Ministry of Food and Agriculture extension services) and non-government organizations. Targeting women and their families, MEDA intends to undertake activities to improve: production (improved input supplies, awareness of improved techniques, drip irrigation technologies, credit, training); post-harvest handling (storage, sorting, processing such as solar drying, customized loan products, training); and facilitation of market linkages (sales agent model, strategies to deal more effectively with traders, market information and ability to use market information in sales transactions, basic business management and access to target markets)./ Au moyen de partenariats avec des organisations locales, l'organisme Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) prévoit aider les agriculteurs de la région nord-ouest à surmonter les difficultés et à devenir des partenaires économiques solides. MEDA compte offrir, de façon continue, des formations, des services de renforcement des capacités et du mentorat à des organismes du gouvernement ghanéen (assemblées de district, divisions de planification et de coordination régionale, services de vulgarisation du ministère de l'Alimentation et de l'Agriculture) et à des organisations non gouvernementales. The project will work to increase the adoption of agricultural practices that promote sustainable livelihoods; improve the utilization of health food especially by women and children; and, increase the effectiveness and use of agricultural extension services. Specific activities include: training farmers on best animal husbandry practices, seed production, pest management and early disease detection; as well as the training of government rural extension service staff in planning, implementing, and monitoring projects together with the participation of local communities and farmers. The project is expected to reach around 45,000 subsistence farmers and their families and around 1,400 members of farmer associations and purchasing groups, as well as local agriculture authorities.At the country level, World Vision Canada is working in partnership with local farm-based civil society organizations to implement this project./ Le projet vise à améliorer l'état de la sécurité alimentaire des personnes vivant dans les communautés rurales pauvres au Ghana, au Mali, en Sierra Leone et au Sénégal. The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF. / Le projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des femmes et des filles au moyen de politiques fondées sur des données probantes et tenant compte des sexospécificités ainsi qu'au moyen de recommandations en matière de programmes visant à soutenir et à étendre la portée d'innovations qui favorisent la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle. Le projet passe en revue et tire des leçons de l'expérience des sous-projets financés par le Fonds canadien de recherche sur la sécurité alimentaire internationale (FCRSAI) dans le cadre de la phase 2, en accordant une attention particulière à la viabilité et aux perspectives d'expansion des sous-projets ainsi qu'à leur impact positif sur l'autonomisation des femmes et l'égalité des sexes. Les données sont recueillies au moyen de visites sur le terrain dans six des sous-projets financés par le FCRSAI, d'entrevues avec les chefs de sous-projets et de l'examen des documents secondaires d'autres projets du portefeuille des 18 sous-projets financés par le FCRSAI. Les résultats sont diffusés aux intervenants des six sous-projets concernés, ainsi qu'aux décideurs au Canada, aux partenaires du développement et aux gouvernements de pays à faible revenu ou à revenu moyen

The project aims to reduce the... burden of sanitation-related diseases and improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Ghana's Northern Region. The project reaches 500,000 beneficiaries including 36,000 school children and 150,000 mothers; 120 schools and 60 health centers in 80 small towns. The project contributes to accelerating access to sanitation facilities and services in small towns to improve the health of Ghanaians. Activities include: (1) providing hygiene education and sanitation facilities (latrines and hand washing facilities); (2) improving sanitation and hygiene practices among beneficiaries; (3) increasing the ability of relevant district and regional institutions to provide sanitation services, and (4) facilitating private sector engagement in the sanitation marketplace./Le projet a pour but de réduire le fardeau des maladies liées à l'assainissement ainsi que d'améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans la region du Nord du Ghana. Il vise 500 000 bénéficiaires, dont 36 000 élèves et 150 000 mères, 120 écoles et 60 centres de santé dans 80 petites villes. Le projet contribue à accélérer l'accès aux installations et aux services d'assainissement dans les petites villes afin d'améliorer la santé des Ghanéens. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) éduquer la population au sujet de pratiques d'hygiène et offrir des installations d'assainissement (latrines et endroits pour se laver les mains); 2) améliorer les pratiques d'assainissement et d'hygiène des bénéficiaires; 3) accroître la capacité des institutions de district et regionals concernées à offrir des services d'assainissement; 4) favoriser la participation du secteur privé au marché de l'assainissement.
