|
This research support project ...will support the ongoing development of IDRC's Food, Environment, and Health (FEH) program in the first two years of its implementation plan. It will fund short-term activities and consultancies (less than 1 year) that will enrich and consolidate its knowledge of food systems research, national policy environments, and potential public and private-sector partners in this sector. The objective is to identify strategic opportunities to advance food systems research in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The project will include, for example, online surveys/consultations, development of communications products, project inception and knowledge translation workshops, expert contribution to the program's gender-outcome strategy, and a call for papers on governance arrangements in public-private partnerships. This project will be managed by the FEH program in Ottawa. Planned activities will evolve over the coming year, allowing the program to respond to emerging opportunities and key lessons learned as they unfold.

The World Bank has estimated t...hat climate change will have negative impacts for some 100 million people worldwide. As many as 43 million people in Africa alone face increased prospects of severe droughts, floods, and storms threatening their health and economic security. African scientists have an important contribution to make in understanding the scope and scale of these problems and developing innovative solutions for policymakers and practitioners. Despite some progress, the number of African scientists remains relatively small. Further efforts are needed to develop Africa's scientific talent and to retain scientists in Africa. This project will support the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences' Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) in building a critical mass of mathematical scientists to contribute to climate change solutions for Africa. This will be achieved through training, internship placements in government, industry, and intergovernmental organizations, and research grants, with a special emphasis on women mathematical scientists. There will also be support for the consolidation of the operations of AIMS and its expansion across the continent, including reaching further into francophone Africa. AIMS alumni have gone on to apply their mathematical skills in many ways to address a number of Africa's development challenges and to contribute solutions to African industry. By building on such successes, the Government of Canada's investment will ensure greater impact of the AIMS model and advance its vision to transform Africa.

Special symposium and journal ...supplement to disseminate results from selected nutrition-sensitive projects (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
This project will support the ...dissemination of results and lessons from several nutrition focused projects under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). Of the 18 active projects currently testing scale-up of innovations, seven have strong potential for improving diet quality and nutrition. Results from these projects will be highlighted in October 2017 at a special symposium during the International Congress of Nutrition held by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the title 'Research and Scaling Up Nutritionally Sensitive Agricultural Innovations. The symposium will lead to the production of a special supplement in a peer-reviewed nutrition journal. Presentations at the symposium will showcase the relevance of nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and discuss how interventions such as food fortification can complement agriculture interventions when the latter alone cannot meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations. Approximately 14 researchers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America will attend the symposium. Funding will support the preparation and coordination of the symposium and cover the costs of technical and editorial support to the preparation of manuscripts for publication. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

EVALUATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS A...ND KEY LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CIFSRF PROGRAM
more
|
Evaluating the contributions a...nd key lessons learned from the CIFSRF program
more
|
Food and nutritional insecurit...y present a significant problem for most developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, where almost 90% of the undernourished people in the world live. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that as of 2015, close to 800 million people are undernourished. In all developing regions, especially the varied and risky rain-fed systems of sub-Saharan Africa, there is a need for sustainable agriculture technologies to increase the productivity, stability, and resilience of production systems, to provide dietary needs for active and healthy lives, and to confront the growing challenges of climate change. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) is a 9-year, $124.5 million initiative implemented in 2009 by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada to support research that addresses food security in the developing world. The goal of CIFSRF is to foster the development of more equitable, productive, and sustainable agricultural systems that increase food security and enhance nutrition by investing in applied research and promoting the scaling up of innovations and research results. This project will synthesize key lessons and document the influence and contributions of the CIFSRF research-for-development program. The analysis will use a case study method to characterize the early food security results and impacts, the nature and extent of the contribution claimed, and how scaling happened or did not happen. It will build a performance story that illustrates the links between the actions of the program and its results. More broadly, the analysis will contribute to understanding how a research for development program such as CIFRSF can lead to broader development outcomes of food and nutrition security, and income security for poor households. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

HARNESSING BIG DATA TO MEET TH...E SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS - BUILDING CAPACITY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH
more
|
Harnessing Big Data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals - Building Capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data - often called 'big data' - promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Data now stream from daily life: from phones, credit cards, and televisions; from the infrastructure of cities; from sensor-equipped buildings, trains, planes, buses and factories. The data flow so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years—a zettabyte—dwarfs the prior production of data for the entirety of human civilization. Interest in capturing and analysing these data sets for public purposes - big data for development (BD4D) - is still relatively new, but accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Global Goals.Though big data sets, such as purchase-transaction or mobile usage data, are not new, until recently limitations on computer memory, retrieval and processing meant that only institutions like the US National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers necessary to analyse the huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, and open-source tools (such as Hadoop) have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big-data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in BD4D has produced a great demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyse large data sets. Yet, as big data scientists are in short supply in developing economies, much of the BD4D research is coming from northern institutions - the United Nations and World Bank, universities and from the private sector [such as IBM and Orange]. This dynamic has meant that the issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by northern concerns, rather than by southern voices and global South collaboration. The same can be said for big data's relationship to gender. The vast majority of data scientists are men, who rarely focus on designing applications that address women's challenges in the Global South. As such, solutions need to be found to address inequalities in capacities and benefits to big data. This grant will support research on big data for development that supports developing countries to measure progress on and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a proposal jointly presented by LIRNEasia , a Sri Lankan think tank, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional –CEPEI, a Colombian think tank. The network will develop capacity amongst researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to those that address gender related issues. Over a two-year period

MENTORSHIP RSP ON GENDER
|
Mentorship RSP on Gender
|
This research support project ...(RSP) will contribute to the implementation of IDRC's gender strategy by enhancing the capacities of its Food, Environment and Health (FEH) program staff and its research partners in designing and implementing food systems research that address gender inequities. This project will assess and build the knowledge, skills, and practices of program staff and FEH grantees for integrating gender into food systems research designs and outcomes. Capacities will be strengthened through peer-based learning processes, use and adaptation of existing program tools and practices, and in-depth mentoring discussions with gender experts. It will document the change processes at work and evaluate this activity's effectiveness in facilitating learning and building capacity for research that maximizes opportunities for addressing gender inequities. This project will specifically target FEH grantees who are developing food systems research proposals for the fiscal year 2017. Support will be provided during the period from concept note development through to the early inception phase of the projects.

The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

more
|
This project aims to improve f...ood security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. This project also addresses the root challenges that farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity. Project activities include: (1) facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders, through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing, (2) facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (for example, non-governmental organizations and governments) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry, and (3) supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards. This project expects to reach 3 million farmers linking them to profitable markets, 10 million households consuming marketable beans, and 10% of SME entrepreneurs trading value-added bean products, and the project targets 3 million tons of improved bean products to be traded in targeted corridors.

This grant represents Canada's... institutional support to the World Economic Forum (WEF). The WEF uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. WEF's Global Challenge on Food Security and Agriculture (Global Challenge) and its regional platform Grow Asia are facilitating multi-stakeholder partnerships and mobilizing investments that contribute to food security, nutrition and agricultural growth. The Global Challenge is a global platform for leaders and stakeholders to collaborate, promote high-level engagement and support strategic actions in the agriculture sector. Activities under the Global Challenge include: (1) launching the Global Agenda Trustees on Food Security and Agriculture; (2) promoting innovation and best practices through the Global Platform for Transformative Partnerships in Agriculture; and (3) expanding multi-stakeholder partnerships at the regional and country levels.Grow Asia supports regional efforts to engage the private sector and identify opportunities for collaboration to help 10 million smallholder farmers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region increase farm productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability by 20% by 2020. Activities under Grow Asia include: (1) establishing a Grow Asia Secretariat; (2) convening stakeholders and brokering four country-level platforms in Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma and the Philippines; (3) supporting innovation within each of the four country-level platforms; and (4) reporting and sharing progress of each of the four country-level platforms./ Cette subvention constitue l'appui institutionnel du Canada au Forum économique mondial (FEM). The research project aims to s...trengthen evidence to inform policies and practices to reduce poverty and vulnerability of women and girls in poor communities. The research focuses on women's economic empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health. It seeks to identify harmful or discriminatory social norms and examine how they constrain women and girls' potential by increasing social exclusion, poverty and vulnerability. The research findings, which are shared with local communities, governments, research organizations and civil society organizations, identify effective measures in policies and programs that would mitigate or remove discriminatory social norms and strengthen women and girls' empowerment and gender equality. The research findings contribute to the Advancing Learning and Innovation on Gender Norms program, and the Gender Adolescence: Global Evidence program.

This project is designed to contribute to research and knowledge sharing.

BUILDING RESEARCH CAPACITY FOR... SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS

Building Research Capacity for... Systematic Reviews
more
|
Technology can be a crucial ca...talyst for improving people's lives in the developing world. There is a growing body of knowledge on the topic, but it is yet to be fully synthesized. The Sri Lankan-based think tank, LIRNEasia is addressing this gap, summarizing the best available primary research on digital technology and development. The goal is to have a central bank of evidence to help practitioners and policymakers, and to inform future research. This project aims to build skills and knowledge among Communication Policy Research Community members in Asia and Africa (CPRsouth and CPR Africa) to: -produce four systematic reviews; -share their findings; and, -consolidate knowledge on digital technologies' role in development policy questions. Systematic reviews are used to appraise relevant research and synthesize existing evidence. The health sciences field uses them widely to inform studies and evaluate research findings' relevance to public health policy. These reviews follow a rigorous methodology, developed by the international research network, the Campbell Collaboration. The network strives to improve the methods used to ensure that studies follow appropriate research protocols. This helps consistently inform practice and policy decisions. There is, however, a shortage of reviews in the digital technologies and development field. As governments, civil society, and donor agencies continue to be actively involved in information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives, consolidating knowledge is essential. LIRNEasia will follow the Campbell Collaboration's protocols and build skills in the communication policy research community to conduct reviews. The reviews will assess and consolidate knowledge on key development questions, including the: -impact of mobile money on the poor; -link between ICTs and education outcomes; -effects of increased access and use of ICTs on small and micro enterprises; -effects of ICTs on market efficiencies in the agriculture sector, and, -efficiency of telecommunication reforms in low- and middle-income countries.

This project will support digi...tal innovations that solve development challenges. It will establish a seed funding program, develop approaches for scaling up innovations, and nurture entrepreneurial leaders. Digital revolution driving change Digital innovations are driving transformative changes around the world and generating new opportunities for growth in developing countries. Greater affordability and accessibly of digital products and services have provided the foundation for rapid growth of start-ups across the developing world. M-Pesa, for instance, was started through a small donor-funded grant. One of the first mobile banking platforms, M-Pesa now boasts more than 21 million users in Kenya and Tanzania alone. Seed funding and mentorship for business growth The Alliance to Scale Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship will identify and support opportunities for scaling digital innovations that solve development challenges in education, governance, health, the environment, and the economy. It combines three regional, competitive small grants and awards programs from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. More specifically, the Alliance will implement a competitive seed-funding program. It will also create business and social impact mentorship programs that will nurture entrepreneurial leaders to scale and commercialize digital innovations. Finally, it will develop best practices for stimulating and scaling digital innovations to ensure they have impact.
