This initiative aims to reduce... mother and child mortality rates in 15 areas of the Tshopo and Ituri provincial health divisions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Eastern Province. Health divisions have poorly trained workers, little capacity to plan and high rates of mothers and Childs mortality. Through this initiative, the delivery of adapted health services to mothers and children (age 0-5) will be improved by increasing the professional skills of male and female health workers. Furthermore, supporting the local financial capacity will improve health services planning and access to quality data. To increase use of these health services, education campaigns will be launched to teach about reducing maternity risks, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as early pregnancy.Activities include: 1) training health care providers; 2) strengthening executives' management skills; 3) building five maternity wards and 15 maternity rehabilitation wards; 4) providing equipment and medicines; 5) launching awareness campaigns for the prevention of mother-child HIV/AIDS transmission; 6) assisting 3,500 seropositive women and newborns; 7) launching an early pregnancy prevention campaign; 8) organising knowledge sharing and networking events for the general Canadian public in order to stimulate their commitment to support MNCH initiatives in developing countries.Direct beneficiaries are: 300,000 pregnant women, 90,000 spouses (men), 43,000 youth (age 15-24) as well as 455,000 newborns and children under five, of which 52% are girls. These beneficiaries will be better informed and/or will use the improved health services. More than 700 health care providers (nurses, doctors, specialists), and 355 health care managers and executives will have stronger professional skills.Oxfam Quebec is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: : Anti-Bwaki Mothers' Association, Ituri Provincial Health Division and Tshopo Provincial Health Division./ Cette initiative vise à réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants dans 15 zones des Divisions provinciales de la santé de la Tshopo et de l'Ituri, en Province Orientale de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). The purpose of this project is... to improve the health care systems for and by women and those most in need. The goal is to improve citizen engagement and to make public institutions more responsive to people's needs and rights through a technological platform. The initiative favours targeted zones (urban and rural): (1) citizen and health officers freely expressing their opinions about their health system using new technologies, including mobile applications, text message platforms, blogs and wikis; (2) use of helpful and useable data by local institutions and by national decision makers to improve health systems and make them more democratic; (3) improved advocacy to make the health systems in the three countries better adapted to the needs of women and those most in need. The project's activities include the following: (1) conducting social integration activities and awareness campaigns to empower the people, notably women and those most in need, in terms of using technology; (2) training local institutions so they can collect, analyze and transmit information regarding health services to the people; (3) developing technologies (mobile application for smartphones and tablets, automated information-sharing module) to allow users to express their opinions about the health system, to allow staff to register complaints and to allow decision makers to better understand the people's needs and grievances; (4) developing a text message platform that allows people to access information on the health system's services and access, including rights to health; (5) training and coaching non-governmental organizations and public institutions to facilitate policy dialogue in order to provide better access to health services that meet people's needs./Ce projet a pour but d'améliorer les systèmes de santé pour et par les femmes et les plus démunis.

March 2016 – The Democratic ...Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to experience one of the most complex and protracted humanitarian crises in the world, with numerous, large-scale displacement and returnee movements, extremely low level basic services leading to large-scale cholera and measles epidemics, increasing refugee populations, and over 50 different armed groups that continue to terrorize communities, particularly in Orientale, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Katanga provinces. At least 1.6 million people in the DRC are internally displaced and a further 500,000 Congolese are living as refugees in neighbouring countries. Approximately 5 million people are food insecure, and acute malnutrition is estimated at 8 per cent. Protection concerns remain very high, with sexual violence and other abuses related to the violence plaguing vast numbers of civilians. Humanitarian needs could further increase if insecurity grows in relation to the deepening political crisis over elections planned for late this year. Overall, an estimated 7.5 million people in the DRC (roughly 9% of the total population) are expected to require humanitarian assistance in 2016 (an increase of 500,000 over this time last year). With GAC's support, the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) is providing assistance to address the urgent needs of up to 42,000 conflict-affected people in Tanganyika and Haut-Katanga provinces. The project focuses on increasing access to safe water and sanitation facilities as well as providing displaced people with basic household items and emergency shelter. Project activities include: (1) distributing basic household items to 5,400 beneficiaries; (2) constructing or rehabilitating emergency shelters for up to 800 households; (3) rehabilitating or constructing eight water sources, benefitting up to 4,000 people; (4) constructing six community latrines; and (5) organizing a community-based hygiene and sanitation campaign, including the distribution of 500 hygiene kits./ Mars 2016 – La République démocratique du Congo (DRC) subit encore l'une des crises humanitaires parmi les plus complexes et longues au monde.

This project supports the Worl...d Food Programme's (WFP) school feeding program. Over the past four decades, WFP has become the world's foremost provider of school meals to poor children. In addition to providing free midday meals, WFP provides students with take-home rations for the family, which encourages parents to send their boys and girls to class. School feeding initiatives target the most food-insecure areas of countries with low school enrolment, irregular school attendance, and high primary school drop-out rates.GAC's support to WFP's school meal program is used to purchase, deliver and distribute nutritious food primarily to school children, particularly girls. School feeding is a means of increasing enrolment and attendance rates, decreasing drop-out rates, and improving children's concentration, learning and academic performance./Ce projet appuie le programme d'alimentation en milieu scolaire du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM).

IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT... AND UTILIZATION OF RESEARCH RESULTS IN ECOHEALTH PROJECTS

|
Improving Knowledge Management... and Utilization of Research Results in Ecohealth Projects
more
|
This study brings together lea...d investigators from 11 past and ongoing Ecohealth projects across Latin America who are interested in achieving better development outcomes guided by research results. Their collective experience tells them that Ecohealth projects do not always make full use of the research findings. They often struggle to communicate their significance to decision-makers in ways that encourage research uptake-or translation into policy. This is not a new challenge for the Ecohealth field. Typically, research deals with health and environment problems for which there are no easy solutions. Attempts to address them are often rife with uncertainty and competing interests. The problems are also increasing in frequency and magnitude around the world, driven by rapid social and environmental change. The world's poor often suffer the most. They are extremely vulnerable, and they have to cope with few resources, poor health, inequality, and environmental degradation. Applying scientific research to address these types of problems remains challenging. It is equally difficult to draw lessons to inform solutions beyond specific settings. On the monitoring and evaluation side, better tools are needed to assess how results can be replicated or scaled up into new policies, intervention models, or new practices. This project will address these gaps. The research team will: -use case studies to analyze factors affecting the adoption and use of knowledge management, monitoring, and evaluation; -refine and test conceptual frameworks, methods, and tools to strengthen these three elements in ongoing research; and, -establish Web-based tools to disseminate and improve research implementation approaches and instruments through peer-to-peer exchanges. The project's long-term aim is to contribute to integrated policies that link health, environment, and development in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the short- to medium-term, the project will enhance Ecohealth research projects. Specifically, it will help make them more effective at delivering intended outcomes. It will also support collaboration between teams from 16 universities and 60 government and civil society organizations in 14 countries.

IMPROVING THE DEVELOPMENT OUTC...OMES OF PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS IN AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Improving the Development Outc...omes of Public-Private Partnerships in Agriculture and the Environment
more
|
In the developing world, econo...mic growth is needed to achieve development outcomes. Local governments are working to offer the right environments to create more dynamic domestic private sectors. Growth can exclude some groups and individuals, so governments have turned to public-private partnerships to promote equitable and sustainable growth. There are challenges. Empirical evidence about how well public-private partnerships work is only available for a few types of initiatives-typically infrastructure or pharmaceutical research. For example, there is limited evidence on successful partnerships between the public and private sector in agriculture, climate change, or public health. The available evidence suggests that partnerships with small and medium domestic enterprises make better targets to improve development indicators such as nutritional status, food security, or household income. This is a new area of research. This project will enable researchers to identify key issues and research capacity in agriculture and environment. The research team will conduct scoping studies to identify a pool of researchers and institutions to conduct innovative and substantive work in this area. IDRC will also solicit research proposals using a closed call. This initiative will fund projects that will provide practical guidance and direction to the public sector to help identify ways to partner with others in the private sector in order to promote local economic development. The goal is to scale up results from successful research, pilot studies, or programs. More specifically, this project will help: - identify key research community players from the private or public sector who can conduct innovative research on public-private partnerships; - develop projects that focus on how public-private partnerships with small and medium enterprises in developing countries improve and increase development outcomes; - define a set of indicators and methods to measure success; and, - validate the research results with national and international stakeholders to help inform practices and policies for partnering with small and medium enterprises.

Canadian International Food Se...curity Research Fund - Phase II
more
|
In 2009, IDRC and the Canadian... International Development Agency (now part of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada) launched the five-year CA$62 million Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). The fund was designed to finance initiatives to solve global food and nutritional insecurity problems through applied, collaborative, and results-oriented research. To date, the fund has supported 19 large applied agriculture and nutrition research consortia in 20 countries. Each has a mix of Canadian and developing-country researchers. Early results appear promising. There is a large volume of high quality research being conducted, much with the potential to be scaled-up. The second phase is budgeted at CA$62.5 million and designed to build on Phase 1. The program will support new food security research in priority areas and countries. It will bring the most promising research results to directly benefit subsistence farmers, particularly women. It will also contribute to long-term global food security. Research will build on existing findings and gaps, while focusing on long-term sustainability and uptake. The project's specific objectives are to: -develop more equitable, productive, and environmentally sustainable agri-food systems that increase food security and enhance nutrition in developing countries; -increase food security in developing countries by funding applied agricultural development and nutrition research; -apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing-country partners to address food security; -use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and, -identify innovations and scale-up the most promising research results.

EMPLOYABILITY OF GRADUATES FRO...M INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES PROGRAMS AT CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES
more
|
Employability of Graduates fro...m International Development Studies Programs at Canadian Universities
more
|
This project addresses the lac...k of quantitative and qualitative employment data for students who graduate from Canadian university programs in international development studies (IDS) at the undergraduate and graduate levels. There are two important consequences for IDS programs: -their ability to prepare students for future employment and citizenship activities cannot be effectively evaluated -IDS curriculums are being designed without this information Understanding career paths The number of IDS graduates in Canada is far greater than the availability of paid positions in the development sector (i.e., aid agencies, NGOs, and multilateral institutions). There is little data on how IDS graduates are using their degrees in academia and other fields outside the development sector. These include journalism, teaching, health, community services, law, and volunteer work, both in Canada and overseas. Knowledge to shape learning This study will collect and analyze longitudinal data on employment choices and pathways for different groups who have received IDS degrees in Canada. It will document the fit between their university training and the skills needed to perform their job, and seek their feedback for adjustments needed to current IDS curriculums. The goal is to obtain data on a large and representative sample of graduates from Canadian IDS programs. Some of these graduates may have held degrees in IDS for up to 40 years and will have a wealth of job experience. Others will be recent graduates with a more limited record of employment. Project leadership and results The Canadian Consortium of University Programs in International Development Studies (CCUPIDS) is coordinating the study. They will share findings through peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations to professionals in the field of development studies in Canada and internationally.

Communicating and disseminatin...g the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund Research results for impact in sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia
more
|
The Livestock Vaccine Innovati...on Fund will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines as well as develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases. It will also build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers and the public and private sectors to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. This Research Support Project will support the management of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund's communication needs, including branding, outreach, and special events activities. Consultants will be hired to design and implement a communication strategy. The strategy will outline key messages, target audiences, approaches for outreach and knowledge sharing, and expected results. The Research Support Project will cover the cost of producing project profiles and project updates to communicate progress, outputs, and early results, and the cost of producing outcome stories that illustrate successes. It will also support the program's translation expenses. Ob The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund is a partnership of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and Canada's International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of $CA57million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

This project seeks to understa...nd the brain mechanisms necessary for people to learn to perceive sounds. Neural circuits and learningThe research team will test people with and without musical training to evaluate their capacity to learn sound patterns. They will scan the subjects with magnetic resonance imaging to determine the neural circuits that underlie these abilities. Musicians from Israel and India will be compared to determine how cultural factors affect learning. Specifically, the project aims to:-understand how the brain learns by examining the influence of auditory learning-test well-controlled musical training procedures in different linguistic and cultural environments-identify which brain areas and parameters are modified by auditory learning-further develop the training environment and collaborative research across the research sitesThe findings will help us to understand learning mechanisms that can be applied to predict learning problems. The research team will also test persons with dyslexia to understand how this disorder may be related to impairments in the person's ability to learn new sound patterns.Project leadershipThe project lead is Robert Zatorre at McGill University, Canada. His collaborators are Merav Ahissar, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Nandini C. Singh, the National Brain Research Centre, India.Project fundingThis project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Azrieli Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

This research support project ...will support the ongoing development of IDRC's Food, Environment, and Health (FEH) program in the first two years of its implementation plan. It will fund short-term activities and consultancies (less than 1 year) that will enrich and consolidate its knowledge of food systems research, national policy environments, and potential public and private-sector partners in this sector. The objective is to identify strategic opportunities to advance food systems research in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The project will include, for example, online surveys/consultations, development of communications products, project inception and knowledge translation workshops, expert contribution to the program's gender-outcome strategy, and a call for papers on governance arrangements in public-private partnerships. This project will be managed by the FEH program in Ottawa. Planned activities will evolve over the coming year, allowing the program to respond to emerging opportunities and key lessons learned as they unfold.

BIG DATA FOR DEVELOPMENT AND T...HE GLOBAL GOALS

|
Big data for development and t...he global goals
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data, often called big data, promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. This project will develop a research agenda and platform to expand the global discussion of big data for development (BD4D).Interest in capturing and analyzing large data sets for public purposes, known as BD4D, is still relatively new. It peaked when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the UN's new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Big data sets, such as purchase transaction or mobile usage data, are not new. However, until recently, limitations on computer memory, retrieval, and processing meant that only institutions like the U.S. National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers required to analyze huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, while open source tools such as Hadoop have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages.Interest in BD4D has produced a tremendous demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyze large data sets. With a few exceptions, the ability to conceptualize and analyze BD4D in the developing world is extremely limited. The lack of big data scientists in developing economies has meant that much of the research comes from institutions such as the UN, World Bank, universities, and the private sector. The issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by interests outside of developing countries. There are limited avenues for developing-country data scientists, policy entrepreneurs, policymakers, lawyers, and economists to interact. This project will help develop an agenda to investigate the potential role of big data in supporting the 17 SDGs and 169 targets. The project will also map stakeholders in developing regions of the world and report on how to facilitate a research and policy agenda on big data for development. Their engagement is crucial for reducing the potentially harmful effects of big data, especially in the context of the 'data revolution.'

DEVELOPMENT OF A TEN-YEAR PULS...E RESEARCH STRATEGY
more
|
Development of a ten-year puls...e research strategy
more
|
Globally, pulses—legumes suc...h as peas, beans, or lentils—are essential to achieving resilient agricultural systems and healthy diets. However, there remains a large gap between current pulse production and the significant potential of pulse crops for meeting global sustainability challenges. In particular, research funding for pulse crops is a fraction of investments made in cereal crops. As a result, global pulse crop production has remained relatively stagnant in yield per acre, acres planted, and total volume produced. To better leverage existing funding and expand knowledge frontiers for climate-smart agriculture, water efficiency, crop diversification, and pest/disease management, coordinated pulse research investments are needed. In collaboration with Emerging Ag Inc., this initiative will build on IDRC-supported research and the International Year of Pulses to bring together a high-level group of public and private sector experts to develop an internationally coordinated research strategy for pulse crop productivity and sustainability. This strategy will be designed to increase investment in strategic, game-changing pulse research with emphasis on transformative research that is not under way or planned within existing research funding and implementation mechanisms, in particular for small-holder farmers in Africa and Asia. Given Canada's strong capacity in pulse research, this project provides an excellent opportunity for Canada and IDRC to show global leadership. It will increase the visibility of all pulse research domains through structured engagement with governments, researchers, private sector, NGOs, and farmers. It will result in global and regional networks of leading scientists and industry players collaborating towards improved productivity and sustainability of pulses. By demonstrating consensus on priority investments, setting an agenda for global discussion, and mobilizing leaders and champions to advocate for funding, essential pulse research investments can be accelerated.

TRAVEL TRANSACTION FEES AND VI...SA CARD REBATES FOR PROJECTS (2016-2017)

|
Travel transaction fees and vi...sa card rebates for projects (2016-2017)
more
|
This project facilitates the r...econciliation and the timely recording of transaction fees and travel rebates from the designated travel services provider (DTSP) that would normally have been charged to individual projects. The DTSP prepares monthly invoices for the transaction fees incurred during the period and a fixed monthly management fee. Ottawa and the regional offices pay these invoices, distributing the costs among research projects, capacity building projects, and corporate and administrative services. The expense distribution between tiers is completed according to the estimated expenditure ratios established under the financial cost structure for 2016/2017. The transaction fees and rebates are allocated according to the estimated expenditure ratio of 71/21/8, approved at the March 2016 Board meeting. This process ensures the elimination of inequities in the treatment of transaction fees and travel rebates in regards to their allocation to head office and regional office cost centres. Transaction fees are no longer charged to individual charge cards, eliminating the need for reconciliations and reducing aggravation to the travelers and travel arrangers. It is a simple, easy-to-implement process and results in lower expenses in projects that contain travel, in the aggregate by exactly the amount charged against this RSP.For 2016/2017, the Centre will continue the practice whereby all travel transaction fees incurred by the Centre (head office and the regional offices) for program related activities be charged to the Development Research Programming portion of the Centre expenses, hence the need for the project to be funded by Forward Planning. The charges against this RSP are reduced by rebates generated from the Centre's Corporate Card program and travel commission revenues returned by the designated travel services provider (DTSP).

Special symposium and journal ...supplement to disseminate results from selected nutrition-sensitive projects (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
This project will support the ...dissemination of results and lessons from several nutrition focused projects under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). Of the 18 active projects currently testing scale-up of innovations, seven have strong potential for improving diet quality and nutrition. Results from these projects will be highlighted in October 2017 at a special symposium during the International Congress of Nutrition held by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the title 'Research and Scaling Up Nutritionally Sensitive Agricultural Innovations. The symposium will lead to the production of a special supplement in a peer-reviewed nutrition journal. Presentations at the symposium will showcase the relevance of nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and discuss how interventions such as food fortification can complement agriculture interventions when the latter alone cannot meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations. Approximately 14 researchers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America will attend the symposium. Funding will support the preparation and coordination of the symposium and cover the costs of technical and editorial support to the preparation of manuscripts for publication. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

EVALUATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS A...ND KEY LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CIFSRF PROGRAM

Evaluating the contributions a...nd key lessons learned from the CIFSRF program
more
|
Food and nutritional insecurit...y present a significant problem for most developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, where almost 90% of the undernourished people in the world live. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that as of 2015, close to 800 million people are undernourished. In all developing regions, especially the varied and risky rain-fed systems of sub-Saharan Africa, there is a need for sustainable agriculture technologies to increase the productivity, stability, and resilience of production systems, to provide dietary needs for active and healthy lives, and to confront the growing challenges of climate change. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) is a 9-year, $124.5 million initiative implemented in 2009 by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada to support research that addresses food security in the developing world. The goal of CIFSRF is to foster the development of more equitable, productive, and sustainable agricultural systems that increase food security and enhance nutrition by investing in applied research and promoting the scaling up of innovations and research results. This project will synthesize key lessons and document the influence and contributions of the CIFSRF research-for-development program. The analysis will use a case study method to characterize the early food security results and impacts, the nature and extent of the contribution claimed, and how scaling happened or did not happen. It will build a performance story that illustrates the links between the actions of the program and its results. More broadly, the analysis will contribute to understanding how a research for development program such as CIFRSF can lead to broader development outcomes of food and nutrition security, and income security for poor households. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

It is widely recognized that p...overty and hunger have important gender dimensions that affect women and men differently. Access to resources and opportunities are frequently unequal. Despite these constraints, poor women and men adapt and innovate and can benefit from progress in science and technology. Research that helps small-scale agriculture become more productive, resilient, and profitable, conducted in a gender-responsive way, can contribute immensely. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) is a CA$124 million initiative supporting Canadian-developing country partnerships that test and scale up practical solutions to increase food production, raise income for farming families, and improve nutrition throughout the Global South. Jointly funded by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada, CIFSRF addresses the critical challenge of global hunger through applied research in 25 countries. The CIFSRF portfolio of projects have integrated gender in various ways and using various approaches, including supporting grantees through workshops, webinars, and on-the-ground support. The projects themselves have varied gender outcomes (e.g. improved access to productive resources, reduction in women's drudgery, improvements in women's nutrition) and have used a diversity of approaches for integrating gender. While this diversity of approaches and outcomes is appropriate given the diverse nature of projects, contexts, and desired outcomes, it does pose a challenge in terms of synthesizing the results and lessons learned. The objective of this project is to synthesize key lessons and perspectives on strategies to effectively integrate gender in an agriculture research-for-development program and identify the gender outcomes achieved. The synthesis will produce two key outputs. The first will be a brief on perspectives and lessons on integrating gender efficiently and effectively in research and development programs that can be used in future programming by IDRC and other organizations. The second will be a scientific publication on strategies for integrating gender in a research-for-development program, and how their outcomes can contribute to the global discourse on gender and food security and inform the broader agriculture research and development community.

SYNTHESIS OF SCHOOL MEAL AND S...CHOOL GARDENING INTERVENTIONS FOR FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION

Synthesis of school meal and s...chool gardening interventions for food security and nutrition
more
|
Several food security and nutr...ition interventions funded by IDRC have school-based programs as entry points to improve nutritional deficiencies among children. This project will support the synthesis of results and lessons from six research projects (including four from the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund) that use school-based models as part of their strategy to improve food security and nutritional outcomes of children. A three-day workshop/symposium, organized by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, will provide an opportunity for researchers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America to exchange experiences, results, and lessons learned. In addition to the selected six projects, examples of large national school-based nutrition programs in India and Brazil will also be included. The workshop will examine linkages of school programs with local food production, relevance of school gardens for use in food security programs, and current policies regarding school feeding programs. Workshop discussions and lessons from the various case studies will be synthesized in a report and a concise publication for wider dissemination. As many governments are trying to improve the implementation of school feeding and school garden programs, outputs from the workshop will contribute to technical guidance for sustainable and cost-effective school-based food security and nutrition programs.

This project is part of the Co...nnecting with Canadians initiative, which aims to involve more Canadians, especially children and youth, as global citizens and agents of change, increasing the participation and the support of Canada's efforts in international development. The British Columbia Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) aims to increase the awareness and engagement of up to 4.6 million Canadians in international development and key global issues through a series of activities including events organized for the International Development Week (IDW). BCCIC also strives to strengthen the capacity and collaboration of Canadian organizations to improve their development effectiveness and sustainability as well as enrich the results of their Civil Society Organization (CSO) partners by offering nearly 200 opportunities to share best practices. BCCI's members, who are the direct beneficiaries of the Connecting with Canadians Initiative, support partners and/or work directly in 61 countries in Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. The sectors in which BCCIC's members work include: health; water and sanitation; education; sustainable livelihoods; gender equity; environmental sustainability; and food security. From 2014 to 2019, BCCIC will lead the Inter-Council Network (ICN).
