The Alliance to Scale Digital ...Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Seed Alliance)
more
|
This project will support digi...tal innovations that solve development challenges. It will establish a seed funding program, develop approaches for scaling up innovations, and nurture entrepreneurial leaders. Digital revolution driving change Digital innovations are driving transformative changes around the world and generating new opportunities for growth in developing countries. Greater affordability and accessibly of digital products and services have provided the foundation for rapid growth of start-ups across the developing world. M-Pesa, for instance, was started through a small donor-funded grant. One of the first mobile banking platforms, M-Pesa now boasts more than 21 million users in Kenya and Tanzania alone. Seed funding and mentorship for business growth The Alliance to Scale Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship will identify and support opportunities for scaling digital innovations that solve development challenges in education, governance, health, the environment, and the economy. It combines three regional, competitive small grants and awards programs from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. More specifically, the Alliance will implement a competitive seed-funding program. It will also create business and social impact mentorship programs that will nurture entrepreneurial leaders to scale and commercialize digital innovations. Finally, it will develop best practices for stimulating and scaling digital innovations to ensure they have impact.

MAKING GROWTH WORK FOR WOMEN I...N LOW-INCOME COUNTRIES (GROW)

Making Growth Work for Women i...n Low-income Countries (GrOW)
more
|
Women's economic empowerment c...an improve if globalization and urbanization lead to greater opportunities for employment. In addition, better living conditions for women, such as access to health care or child care services, can expand women's choices in the labour market. However, depending on laws and social norms, these employment opportunities may be confined to low-wage sectors, thus increasing women's vulnerability. This project aims to support economic policy that can enhance women's empowerment. It will analyze the positive and negative effects of economic growth on women's lives and economic opportunities in nine developing countries. The evidence generated will help decision-makers in low-income countries to amplify the positive effects and mitigate the negative effects of globalization and urbanization. The project will also strengthen the capacity of southern researchers to lead future efforts to improve economic policies. This project is part of the Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) program. GrOW is a five-year, multi-funder partnership with the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and IDRC. Launched in 2013 with a focus on low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, the program aims to support policies and interventions that improve women's livelihoods and contribute to social well-being. In addition to 10 projects addressing the barriers to women's economic empowerment, GrOW will support a cluster of four projects looking at the intersection of economic growth and women's economic empowerment. This project is among them, selected through a global competitive call.

|
The Cultivate Africa's Future ...(CultiAF) initiative will fund effective strategies and methods for integrating gender meaningfully in agriculture, food, and nutrition security research. This will be achieved through strategies aimed at improving the understanding of gender concepts among project teams, effective integration of social or gender issues in research design, increased capacity to implement gender analysis in practice, and personal and institutional commitment to follow-through from analysis to integration of gender-transformative actions. The main activities supported under this project are: -a gender audit of 11 projects to assess current levels of gender integration and identify key gaps and opportunities for better and more outcome-oriented gender integration; -specific gender analysis and integration plans for each project and provision of technical support to implement and measure the impacts of these plans; -a monitoring and evaluation system to track the impact of gender analysis and gender integration on effective delivery of development outcomes; and -tracking of changes in individual and organizational capacities, skills and commitments to meaningfully integrate gender in agriculture programming. A paper on gender integration demonstrating what it takes to move from analysis to action and impact will be produced. Among the other expected results: -at least 80% of the projects demonstrate impacts on gender outcomes and better delivery of other project outcomes as a result of gender integration activities; -documented evidence demonstrates the role of gender integration in improving delivery of project and gender outcomes and addressing gender inequalities; and -project teams and their organizations demonstrate greater capacity to carry out and use gender analysis to guide implementation of gender-transformative research and activities. About CultiAF CultiAF is a joint program of the Australian International Food Security Research Centre of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). CultiAF supports research to achieve long-term food security in Eastern and Southern Africa. Project

There has been considerable su...ccess in integrating gender in agricultural research. However, projects, programs, and organizations often still struggle with the challenge of moving from gender analysis to implementation of transformative actions that have positive outcomes on the lives of men and women smallholders. This project will fund effective strategies and methods for integrating gender meaningfully in agriculture, food and nutrition security research. This will be achieved through strategies aimed at improving the understanding of gender concepts among project teams, effective integration of social or gender issues in research design, increased capacity to implement gender analysis in practice, and personal and institutional commitment to follow through from analysis to integration of gender-transformative actions. Applying lessons learned from earlier research funded by CIFSRF and the Cultivate Africa's Future fund (IDRC multi-funder programs), activities supported under this project include: -a gender audit of 11 projects to assess current levels of gender integration and identify key gaps and opportunities for better and more outcome-oriented gender integration; -specific gender analysis and integration plans for each project and provision of technical support (in terms of capacity building, tools, resources, and mentoring) to implement and measure the impacts of these plans; -a monitoring and evaluation system to track the impact of gender analysis and gender integration on effective delivery of development outcomes; -tracking of changes in individual and organizational capacities, skills and commitments to meaningfully integrate gender in agriculture programming. A paper on gender integration demonstrating what it takes to move from analysis to action and impact will be produced. |
This research support project ...will support the ongoing development of IDRC's Food, Environment, and Health (FEH) program in the first two years of its implementation plan. It will fund short-term activities and consultancies (less than 1 year) that will enrich and consolidate its knowledge of food systems research, national policy environments, and potential public and private-sector partners in this sector. The objective is to identify strategic opportunities to advance food systems research in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The project will include, for example, online surveys/consultations, development of communications products, project inception and knowledge translation workshops, expert contribution to the program's gender-outcome strategy, and a call for papers on governance arrangements in public-private partnerships. This project will be managed by the FEH program in Ottawa. Planned activities will evolve over the coming year, allowing the program to respond to emerging opportunities and key lessons learned as they unfold.

DEVELOPMENT OF A TEN-YEAR PULS...E RESEARCH STRATEGY
more
|
Development of a ten-year puls...e research strategy
more
|
Globally, pulses—legumes suc...h as peas, beans, or lentils—are essential to achieving resilient agricultural systems and healthy diets. However, there remains a large gap between current pulse production and the significant potential of pulse crops for meeting global sustainability challenges. In particular, research funding for pulse crops is a fraction of investments made in cereal crops. As a result, global pulse crop production has remained relatively stagnant in yield per acre, acres planted, and total volume produced. To better leverage existing funding and expand knowledge frontiers for climate-smart agriculture, water efficiency, crop diversification, and pest/disease management, coordinated pulse research investments are needed. In collaboration with Emerging Ag Inc., this initiative will build on IDRC-supported research and the International Year of Pulses to bring together a high-level group of public and private sector experts to develop an internationally coordinated research strategy for pulse crop productivity and sustainability. This strategy will be designed to increase investment in strategic, game-changing pulse research with emphasis on transformative research that is not under way or planned within existing research funding and implementation mechanisms, in particular for small-holder farmers in Africa and Asia. Given Canada's strong capacity in pulse research, this project provides an excellent opportunity for Canada and IDRC to show global leadership. It will increase the visibility of all pulse research domains through structured engagement with governments, researchers, private sector, NGOs, and farmers. It will result in global and regional networks of leading scientists and industry players collaborating towards improved productivity and sustainability of pulses. By demonstrating consensus on priority investments, setting an agenda for global discussion, and mobilizing leaders and champions to advocate for funding, essential pulse research investments can be accelerated.

Special symposium and journal ...supplement to disseminate results from selected nutrition-sensitive projects (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
This project will support the ...dissemination of results and lessons from several nutrition focused projects under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). Of the 18 active projects currently testing scale-up of innovations, seven have strong potential for improving diet quality and nutrition. Results from these projects will be highlighted in October 2017 at a special symposium during the International Congress of Nutrition held by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the title 'Research and Scaling Up Nutritionally Sensitive Agricultural Innovations. The symposium will lead to the production of a special supplement in a peer-reviewed nutrition journal. Presentations at the symposium will showcase the relevance of nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and discuss how interventions such as food fortification can complement agriculture interventions when the latter alone cannot meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations. Approximately 14 researchers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America will attend the symposium. Funding will support the preparation and coordination of the symposium and cover the costs of technical and editorial support to the preparation of manuscripts for publication. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

EVALUATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS A...ND KEY LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CIFSRF PROGRAM

Evaluating the contributions a...nd key lessons learned from the CIFSRF program
more
|
Food and nutritional insecurit...y present a significant problem for most developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, where almost 90% of the undernourished people in the world live. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that as of 2015, close to 800 million people are undernourished. In all developing regions, especially the varied and risky rain-fed systems of sub-Saharan Africa, there is a need for sustainable agriculture technologies to increase the productivity, stability, and resilience of production systems, to provide dietary needs for active and healthy lives, and to confront the growing challenges of climate change. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) is a 9-year, $124.5 million initiative implemented in 2009 by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada to support research that addresses food security in the developing world. The goal of CIFSRF is to foster the development of more equitable, productive, and sustainable agricultural systems that increase food security and enhance nutrition by investing in applied research and promoting the scaling up of innovations and research results. This project will synthesize key lessons and document the influence and contributions of the CIFSRF research-for-development program. The analysis will use a case study method to characterize the early food security results and impacts, the nature and extent of the contribution claimed, and how scaling happened or did not happen. It will build a performance story that illustrates the links between the actions of the program and its results. More broadly, the analysis will contribute to understanding how a research for development program such as CIFRSF can lead to broader development outcomes of food and nutrition security, and income security for poor households. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

HARNESSING BIG DATA TO MEET TH...E SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS - BUILDING CAPACITY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH
more
|
Harnessing Big Data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals - Building Capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data - often called 'big data' - promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Data now stream from daily life: from phones, credit cards, and televisions; from the infrastructure of cities; from sensor-equipped buildings, trains, planes, buses and factories. The data flow so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years—a zettabyte—dwarfs the prior production of data for the entirety of human civilization. Interest in capturing and analysing these data sets for public purposes - big data for development (BD4D) - is still relatively new, but accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Global Goals.Though big data sets, such as purchase-transaction or mobile usage data, are not new, until recently limitations on computer memory, retrieval and processing meant that only institutions like the US National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers necessary to analyse the huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, and open-source tools (such as Hadoop) have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big-data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in BD4D has produced a great demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyse large data sets. Yet, as big data scientists are in short supply in developing economies, much of the BD4D research is coming from northern institutions - the United Nations and World Bank, universities and from the private sector [such as IBM and Orange]. This dynamic has meant that the issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by northern concerns, rather than by southern voices and global South collaboration. The same can be said for big data's relationship to gender. The vast majority of data scientists are men, who rarely focus on designing applications that address women's challenges in the Global South. As such, solutions need to be found to address inequalities in capacities and benefits to big data. This grant will support research on big data for development that supports developing countries to measure progress on and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a proposal jointly presented by LIRNEasia , a Sri Lankan think tank, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional –CEPEI, a Colombian think tank. The network will develop capacity amongst researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to those that address gender related issues. Over a two-year period

MENTORSHIP RSP ON GENDER
|
Mentorship RSP on Gender
|
This research support project ...(RSP) will contribute to the implementation of IDRC's gender strategy by enhancing the capacities of its Food, Environment and Health (FEH) program staff and its research partners in designing and implementing food systems research that address gender inequities. This project will assess and build the knowledge, skills, and practices of program staff and FEH grantees for integrating gender into food systems research designs and outcomes. Capacities will be strengthened through peer-based learning processes, use and adaptation of existing program tools and practices, and in-depth mentoring discussions with gender experts. It will document the change processes at work and evaluate this activity's effectiveness in facilitating learning and building capacity for research that maximizes opportunities for addressing gender inequities. This project will specifically target FEH grantees who are developing food systems research proposals for the fiscal year 2017. Support will be provided during the period from concept note development through to the early inception phase of the projects.

The project, announced in budg...et 2015, supports the design of a Statistics Canada survey targeting people who send remittances from Canada to developing countries. The purpose of the survey is to better understand remittance flows from Canada to developing countries, and to better understand the needs of remittance consumers in Canada. Remittances are an important source of income for millions of families in developing countries and can help to pay for nutrition, education, and health care. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to use the survey results to contribute to safer, more reliable and lower-cost remittance services to developing countries.'/ Le projet permettra à Statistique Canada de créer un sondage qui sera mené auprès de personnes qui envoient des fonds du Canada vers des pays en développement.

The research project aims to s...trengthen evidence to inform policies and practices to reduce poverty and vulnerability of women and girls in poor communities. The research focuses on women's economic empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health. It seeks to identify harmful or discriminatory social norms and examine how they constrain women and girls' potential by increasing social exclusion, poverty and vulnerability. The research findings, which are shared with local communities, governments, research organizations and civil society organizations, identify effective measures in policies and programs that would mitigate or remove discriminatory social norms and strengthen women and girls' empowerment and gender equality. The research findings contribute to the Advancing Learning and Innovation on Gender Norms program, and the Gender Adolescence: Global Evidence program.

This project aims to help 10,0...00 women and men with disabilities to find sustainable employment and increase their household incomes. The project seeks to identify and address the key causes of chronic unemployment, underemployment, and poverty of women and men with disabilities in Dhaka, Bangladesh; Hyderabad, India; and Kathmandu, Nepal. It focuses on three sectors that employ a proportionally large number of people with disabilities: cottage or home-based industries, the hospitality sector, and food processing. The project seeks to influence small and medium enterprises to hire and promote people with disabilities, as well as increase the employability of persones with disabilities. It supports 300 employers in offering work placements for people with disabilities, thereby providing positive models for other employers in the target countries./ Le projet vise à aider 10 000 hommes et femmes handicapés à trouver des emplois durables et à accroître le revenu de leur ménage.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being of women domestic workers in Bangladesh. Approximately 1.8 million Bangladeshi women are employed as domestic workers in Dhaka, many facing gender-based violence on a regular basis. These women are disadvantaged due to lack of skills and specific vulnerabilities leading to routine exploitation and abuse, and lack of awareness of and protection for their rights. Project activities include: (1) providing women with skills training for formal job opportunities; (2) increasing women's awareness of and protection of their rights; and (3) building the capacity of the Government of Bangladesh and its civil society partners to implement and monitor the Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare Policy./Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des travailleuses domestiques au Bangladesh.

The purpose of this project is... to improve the health care systems for and by women and those most in need. The goal is to improve citizen engagement and to make public institutions more responsive to people's needs and rights through a technological platform. The initiative favours targeted zones (urban and rural): (1) citizen and health officers freely expressing their opinions about their health system using new technologies, including mobile applications, text message platforms, blogs and wikis; (2) use of helpful and useable data by local institutions and by national decision makers to improve health systems and make them more democratic; (3) improved advocacy to make the health systems in the three countries better adapted to the needs of women and those most in need. The project's activities include the following: (1) conducting social integration activities and awareness campaigns to empower the people, notably women and those most in need, in terms of using technology; (2) training local institutions so they can collect, analyze and transmit information regarding health services to the people; (3) developing technologies (mobile application for smartphones and tablets, automated information-sharing module) to allow users to express their opinions about the health system, to allow staff to register complaints and to allow decision makers to better understand the people's needs and grievances; (4) developing a text message platform that allows people to access information on the health system's services and access, including rights to health; (5) training and coaching non-governmental organizations and public institutions to facilitate policy dialogue in order to provide better access to health services that meet people's needs./Ce projet a pour but d'améliorer les systèmes de santé pour et par les femmes et les plus démunis.

ENGINEERED VACCINES AGAINST HE...MORRHAGIC SEPTICEMIA IN RUMINANTS

Engineered vaccines against he...morrhagic septicemia in ruminants
more
|
Hemorrhagic septicemia is an a...cute, often fatal bacterial disease, mainly in cattle and buffaloes, which is prevalent in Asian and African countries. Hemorrhagic septicemia epidemics are devastating and jeopardize the economic return of animal production, as well as the harvest of vital crops dependent on animal traction. Vaccination is the most efficient and cost-effective method to control hemorrhagic septicemia. However, a primary challenge in developing effective vaccines against this disease is to design vaccines that have a broadly cross-protective immune response against all known variants of the bacteria. This project aims to overcome this challenge by targeting a key antigen for survival of the pathogen and disease causation; obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the sequence and structural diversity of the target antigen in all related bacteria; and designing commercially-viable, engineered antigens capable of inducing a broadly cross-protective immune response against hemorrhagic septicemia. Surface receptor proteins involved in binding transferrin, which is used by the hemorrhagic septicemia pathogen to acquire iron, will be targeted. These proteins are ideal vaccine targets since they are essential for bacterial survival. This project aims to define the composition of engineered antigens capable of inducing a broadly cross-protective immune response against Pasteurella multocida, the causative agent of hemorrhagic septicemia. The project is a collaboration between the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto and VIDO-InterVac at the University of Saskatchewan. This team will also collaborate with the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in Ethiopia and the National Centre for Animal Health in Bhutan. This project is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF) is a partnership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK PRODUCTI...ON, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENT IN THE BOLIVIAN ALTIPLANO
more
|
Sustainable Livestock Producti...on, Health, and Environment in the Bolivian Altiplano
more
|
This project aims to promote e...vidence-based policies for improving livestock production, environmental sustainability, and health in the Bolivian Altiplano's rural communities. Traditional farming under threat in Bolivia Raising sheep and llamas is a fundamental economic activity that is threatened by current agricultural practices in the high plateau. An increasing dependence on sheep farming is resulting in overgrazing and excessive pressure on native pastures. These practices are accelerating the destruction of the natural soil cover, compromising livestock production and local livelihoods in the long-term. Llamas are risking local livestock health Llama production can provide food protein, hide, fibre, and transport. Without interfering with sheep grazing, it reduces pressures on fragile highland ecosystems. The Ministry of Rural Development launched a national program to support the development of the llama sector, contribute to local economies, and ensure sustainable livestock practices. However, animal disease, including the high prevalence of sarcocystosis in llamas, is limiting the program's potential. Local farmers are abandoning the traditional mixed llama-sheep production. Evaluating risks and options The project will address important knowledge gaps associated with local livestock health and public health, including the burden of parasitic diseases in livestock and human exposure to pathogens associated with both types of animals. The research team will develop a dynamic model to illustrate interrelationships and trade-offs of different mixed sheep and llama livestock production scenarios. This will help facilitate discussions between researchers, policymakers, and local stakeholders on policy options and regulations for: -improving livestock production, animal, and human health; -supporting local economic growth; and -ensuring the sustainability of native pastures. Partnerships for progress The project was developed through a multi-actor partnership that includes strong engagement from municipal and departmental decision-makers, including the Animal Health, Public Health, and Protected Areas of the Ministries of Rural Development, Health, and Environment. This approach will help ensure alignment of research and policy. A key intended outcome is to translate existing national policies into locally adapted laws and multi-sector programs, with the longer-term goal of replication elsewhere in Bolivia. This will help foster local production of animal-derived food in environmentally sustainable ways. It will also promote public health in the Altiplano's vulnerable populations. Projet de recherche

Research quality assurance and... research ethics standards for think tanks
more
|
IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project. The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.
