This project is part of the Co...nnecting with Canadians initiative, which aims to involve more Canadians, especially children and youth, as global citizens and agents of change, increasing the participation and the support of Canada's efforts in international development. The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) promotes public awareness of international development issues focused on economic development, education and health, targeting Manitobans in rural, urban and northern areas. They are targeting 22,000 Canadians over five years through activities such as school programs, the Fair Trade Challenge and Carrotmobs (a campaign to promote purchasing from fair trade businesses), with the objective of engaging Manitobans, especially youth, as global citizens. An additional 600,000 Manitobans are being reached indirectly through media campaigns. The project activities focus on engaging youth and teachers, reaching out to rural and northern Manitobans, growing the capacity of both MCIC members and other partners such as the private sector, and institutions. The project also strengthens the capacity of the private sector, civil society organizations and institutions to contribute more effectively to international sustainable development; and facilitates access for Global Affairs Canada to a broad range of key stakeholders in Manitoba.MCIC is part of the Inter-Council Network (ICN).

Integrated Approach to Improve... Nutrition in the Kolda and Kédougou Regions/Approche intégrée pour améliorer la nutrition dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou
more
|
This project aims at improving... the nutritional security of populations living in the Kolda and Kédougou regions by focussing on preventing new cases of malnutrition, especially amongst women and young children. These regions show malnutrition rates significantly higher than the national average, resulting in child mortality rates twice as high as the national average. The project seeks to reduce malnutrition by adopting an integrated approach consisting of the following three components: 1) promote better nutrition practices for vulnerable populations; 2) support communities in the production of more nutritious food; 3) strengthen the capacity of the government at the local, regional and national levels to deliver nutrition or nutrition-sensitive programmes.Project activities include: 1) train and provide equipment to 1,775 health workers to deliver behaviour change communication messages on appropriate nutritional practices to approximately 35,000 influential in household food consumption decision-making (mainly women); 2) support the development and delivery of community services related to maternal and child nutrition to 31,000 pregnant and lactating women and approximately 50,500 children under five; 3) implement community initiatives to improve the production and distribution of nutrient-rich food by 30,000 households, including training on good agricultural practices and support to the development of local entrepreneurship; 4) train and provide equipment to local and regional government structures leading to a better inclusion of nutrition issues in the design, implementation, coordination and monitoring of development plans./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité nutritionnelle des populations vivant dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou en mettant l'accent sur la prévention des nouveaux cas de malnutrition, surtout chez les femmes et les jeunes enfants.

This project aims to work, ove...r a four year period, in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and to their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project will address this inequality by improving the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam).Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 women) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam.

Haiti is one of the countries ...most affected by maternal mortality and child morbidity. The towns of Leogane and Gressier are located in the West department, where the population is densest and highest. This is also where the use of health institutions, consultations, coverage and assisted deliveries are lowest. This initiative aims to reduce mortality rates among pregnant women, newborns and children under five in Haiti by supporting four healthcare facilities to provide obstetrics and neonatal emergency services. Activities include: 1) training healthcare personnel in reproductive health; 2) implementing a network of 50 polyvalent community healthcare officers to increase offer and usage of available maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; 3) rehabilitating and building community healthcare centres to facilitate efficient service delivery; 4) stocking community healthcare centres in target communities with medical supplies, basic medicine and necessary medical equipment; and 5) implementing a functional and effective integrated approach and coordinating mechanism amongst main stakeholders. The project directly benefits approximately 30,000 women, men and children residing in the Léogâne and Gressier communities, and benefits indirectly 224,000 people living in these two communities surrounding areas. It also contributes to helping 15,000 people in Canada to understand issues related to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Haiti. The project is implemented by a consortium lead by the Léger Foundation in collaboration with the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (CCISD).

RESEARCH QUALITY ASSURANCE AND... RESEARCH ETHICS STANDARDS FOR THINK TANKS
more
|
Research quality assurance and... research ethics standards for think tanks
more
|
IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project. The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.

|

The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

This project represents Canada...'s continuing support for Ethiopia's Productive Safety Net Program (PSPN). Led by the Government of Ethiopia, with support from Canada and other partners, this initiative aims to enhance household and community resilience to shocks, such as droughts, and improve household food security, nutrition and economic well-being in Ethiopia's most vulnerable communities. To achieve these objectives, the project provides food insecure households with predictable food or cash transfers. In exchange for these transfers, beneficiaries participate in public works activities to build community assets and improve watershed management, a number of these activities build resilience to climate change. The most vulnerable beneficiaries (e.g. elderly people and pregnant and lactating mothers) receive transfers without contributing their labour for public works. The project reach is up to 10 million rural beneficiaries. Project activities include: (1) providing cash and food transfers to food insecure households, (2) conducting livelihoods interventions (e.g. crop and livestock production, and off-farm income generating activities), (3) providing key health and nutrition services (e.g. behaviour change communication activities), (4) construction of community assets (e.g. land rehabilitation, health posts), and (5) offering capacity development activities. Canada's support to this program is provided through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Bank.

SCALING UP PULSE INNOVATIONS F...OR FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY IN SOUTHERN ETHIOPIA (CIFSRF PHASE 2)

|
Scaling Up Pulse Innovations f...or Food and Nutrition Security in Southern Ethiopia (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
Ethiopia has one of the highes...t prevalences of protein-calorie malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the world. This project will scale up new pulse food products (chickpeas and beans, for example) in southern Ethiopia to address food insecurity and malnutrition. Applying knowledge on a large scale This project builds on previous research conducted in Ethiopia's southern highlands, which identified and tested the best performing chickpea and bean varieties, along with suitable agronomic management practices for pulse crops. The research found that nutrition interventions improved children's and mothers' nutritional status. However, the results have not extended beyond the project sites, so adoption and impacts are limited. This project will generate and promote ways to encourage large-scale adoption of improved pulse crop technologies from pilot sites to more areas in southern Ethiopia. It will demonstrate the broader impacts of promoting pulse crop production on food security, income, and children's nutritional status. Food and nutrition for thousands A team of Canadian and Ethiopian researchers will test and deploy multistakeholder platforms to scale up pulse-based innovations and food products. The project will benefit tens of thousands of small-scale farmers, producers, and consumers. Researchers will study the entire value chain for beans and chickpeas - from production to consumers. The project is expected to expand demand for nutritious, easily digestible, and culturally appropriate products to meet rural families' nutritional and health needs. Positive change beyond Ethiopia The project will leverage private sector partners, farmers' cooperatives, and government agencies to integrate the new products into local supply chains. The project team will also identify companies to commercialize them. This research will bring large-scale positive change by directly involving more than 70,000 rural households, producers, processors, and consumers in testing and using pulse-based innovations and food products. It will also create capacity and improve women farmers' access and control over resources to enhance their participation, productivity, income, and nutritional status. The project has the potential to benefit large populations in Ethiopia and beyond and is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.

EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

ENGINEERED VACCINES AGAINST HE...MORRHAGIC SEPTICEMIA IN RUMINANTS

|
Engineered vaccines against he...morrhagic septicemia in ruminants
more
|
Hemorrhagic septicemia is an a...cute, often fatal bacterial disease, mainly in cattle and buffaloes, which is prevalent in Asian and African countries. Hemorrhagic septicemia epidemics are devastating and jeopardize the economic return of animal production, as well as the harvest of vital crops dependent on animal traction. Vaccination is the most efficient and cost-effective method to control hemorrhagic septicemia. However, a primary challenge in developing effective vaccines against this disease is to design vaccines that have a broadly cross-protective immune response against all known variants of the bacteria. This project aims to overcome this challenge by targeting a key antigen for survival of the pathogen and disease causation; obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the sequence and structural diversity of the target antigen in all related bacteria; and designing commercially-viable, engineered antigens capable of inducing a broadly cross-protective immune response against hemorrhagic septicemia. Surface receptor proteins involved in binding transferrin, which is used by the hemorrhagic septicemia pathogen to acquire iron, will be targeted. These proteins are ideal vaccine targets since they are essential for bacterial survival. This project aims to define the composition of engineered antigens capable of inducing a broadly cross-protective immune response against Pasteurella multocida, the causative agent of hemorrhagic septicemia. The project is a collaboration between the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto and VIDO-InterVac at the University of Saskatchewan. This team will also collaborate with the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in Ethiopia and the National Centre for Animal Health in Bhutan. This project is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF) is a partnership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

A comparative study of child m...arriage and parenthood in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Zambia
more
|
The aim of this project is to ...enhance the understanding of the complexities of child marriage and parenthood to inform policies and programming. The project will generate new evidence of international relevance, and by taking a comparative approach, it will contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Studies to date have emphasized the drivers and immediate consequences for mothers and their infants. By taking an approach that emphasizes life course poverty and gender inequality, this project will help uncover how interventions in health, education, violence, and livelihoods need to be adapted to meet the needs of adolescent parents or children who are married, in order to have a positive effect on girls' and boys' trajectories. The overall research will be led by Young Lives (University of Oxford). The research will be undertaken in collaboration with Child Frontiers (Zambia) and Grupo de Analisis para el Desarollo – GRADE (Peru). A socio-ecological life course perspective will guide the research, which will use mixed methods, including quantitative as well as participatory approaches. It will also use a relational approach to gender and generation, examining the relationships, power structures, and norms and practices that influence adolescents' and young people's transitions, not only in terms of motherhood and marriage but also with respect to boys, marriage, fatherhood, and the formation of new households. To ensure uptake, an innovative engagement plan will be developed that involves key stakeholders from the outset, especially those drafting policies related to Sustainable Development Goal #5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

NUTRITIOUS MAIZE FOR ETHIOPIA/...MAÏS NUTRITIF POUR L'ÉTHIOPIE

Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia/...Maïs nutritif pour l'Éthiopie

This project aims to improve h...ousehold food security and nutrition in Ethiopia for an estimated 3.98 million people by promoting widespread adoption of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) varieties amongst growers and consumers of maize. Also known as corn, maize is an essential food source for Ethiopians. QPM is a non-genetically engineered form of maize. The maize contains a naturally derived gene mutation of maize which has a higher content of two essential amino acids necessary to synthesize proteins within the human body after consumption, and provides twice as much nutritional value as common maize. The project supports the adoption of QPM as well as increases in farm productivity and household incomes through the expansion of the maize seed industry. Project activities include: introducing QPM seed and food products to farmers (women and men) engaged in subsistence-level maize production as a means to meet household basic food requirements; disseminating gender-sensitive crop management practices to farmers and agricultural extension officers; and strengthening local capacity of researchers, seed producers, and seed suppliers on the production, distribution, and quality control of QPM seeds.Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME) is an initiative of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), a member centre of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research (CGIAR).
