The Canadian International Foo...d Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households - particularly for women and girls, who face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. One of the objectives of the CIFSRF is to ensure that the results generated by the research funded are used to inform food security policies, programs, and on-the-ground development activities. Partnership is also an important aspect of the CIFSRF. All the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities. September 2013 - The humanitar...ian situation in Syria has rapidly deteriorated over the past year as a result of the civil war in the country. The United Nations estimates that 100,000 people have been killed, and hundreds of thousands more wounded, due to the violence. Within Syria, some 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 4.25 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, more than 2 million Syrian refugees are living in host countries in the region. By the end of 2013, the United Nations estimates that 10 million people in Syria will need humanitarian assistance and a further 3.55 million refugees from Syria will have fled to host countries, where resources are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people needing assistance. With DFATD's support, this project is providing personal and household hygiene kits for up to 15,000 internally displaced families (approximately 75,000 people) inside Syria. Project activities include: performing an updated assessment of the number of people in need and distributing hygiene kits to the beneficiaries identified. The kits contain a variety of items that support basic hygiene and control the spread of disease, including: soap, anti-lice shampoo, and other personal hygiene items; dish soap, detergent, candles, and matches.

This project aims to improve t...he resilience of Palestinian women, men and children by ensuring that about 237,000 non-refugee Palestinians in Gaza and 263,000 non-refugee Palestinians in the West Bank have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. Some project activities include: (1) providing emergency food assistance; (2) distributing food vouchers; (3) providing food to orphanages; and (4) monitoring access to food to determine where the needs are greatest. To raise awareness of the importance of good nutrition, the project supports educational campaigns and activities. The project also improves coordination among organizations working to increase access to food and enhance emergency preparedness. This project is one of over 150 projects that make up the United Nations 2014 Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC) for the West Bank and Gaza. The 2014 HPC, worth over US $400 million, allows the international community to help spare Palestinians from the worst effects of the ongoing crisis. Delivered through a coordinated approach, the HPC provides life-saving humanitarian assistance by providing food, water, health, and nutrition and by increasing the protection of civilians.

This time-bound campaign seeks to mobilize political attention and provide technical assistance to governments to implement their country-level action plans so that their State armed and security forces are ‘child free' by 2016. Planned activities under the “Children, Not Soldiers†campaign include: (1) mobilizing support including at global, regional and country level, as well as partnerships, expertise, advocacy and funding to contribute to the campaign; (2) supporting member states with implementation of commitments including finalizing action plans and operational plans for their implementation and/or roadmaps with clear benchmarks towards full compliance and delisting; (3) entering into dialogue with parties to conflict including creating dedicated child protection units within armed forces; (4) providing technical and other support for the release and reintegration of children formerly associated with security forces and armed groups; (5) providing capacity building to establishing reliable age-assessment mechanisms for the recruitment process including a free and accessible national birth registration system; and (6) monitoring, verifying and reporting on grave violations of children's rights at local level, including compliance with government action plans.

This project supports the Inte...rnational Food Policy Research Institute in developing and publishing the Global Nutrition Report for 2015-2016. With the support of Canada, as well as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Germany, The Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), the Netherlands, The United Kingdom and others, the Report aims to sustain and increase international political commitment to take concrete action to improve nutrition and reduce vulnerability among women and children in countries with high incidence of under-nutrition. The Report analyzes existing data on nutrition, identifies knowledge gaps and proposes ways to address them. It also provides clear recommendations on priority actions and seeks to strengthen stakeholder and citizen engagement to develop a plan to improve nutrition.

The objectives of the CIFSRF are: (1) to increase food security in developing countries by funding applied research in agricultural development and nutrition; (2) to apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing country partners to address food security; (3) to use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and (4) to identify innovations and scale up the most promising research from both Phase I and Phase II of the Fund to help meet future global food demand. Phase II focuses geographically on the 20 countries already targeted under Phase I as well as all other official development assistance-eligible countries in Africa. Project activities for phase II include: (1) developing farming methods that can better withstand the effects of climate change; (2) developing environmentally sustainable gender-sensitive, farmer-led research models for breeding and distribution of new crops or underutilized traditional crops and consumption of sufficient, safe and nutritious food; (3) improving family-based aquaculture; (4) decreasing domestic animal losses through development of vaccines; and (5) reducing post-harvest losses through adaptable and affordable technologies. December 2015 - As a result of... a particularly strong El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean, Ethiopia is facing its worst food security crisis in thirty years. Failed rains in many areas of southern and eastern Ethiopia throughout 2015 have left more than 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance, a massive increase from 2.9 million people at the beginning of the year. Malnutrition rates also continue to rise with 350,000 children expected to require treatment for severe acute malnutrition in early 2016. In addition, access to safe water, particularly in rural areas, continues to decline, leading to widespread livestock deaths and the threat of outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as cholera. Depending on events, the situation in Ethiopia is expected to remain critical until at least October 2016. With the support of Canada and other donors, the UN World Food Programme is meeting the emergency food needs of at least 6 million drought-affected Ethiopians, through direct general food distribution, cash / voucher programming, or other schemes (such as cash-for-work).

Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households. Women and girls are particularly targeted by this project since they face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. Partnership is an important aspect of the CIFSRF and all the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities.

March 2014 - UNICEF, with the ...Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, has launched the ''Children, Not Soldiers'' campaign.
