Antibiotic resistance (ABR) particularly hits resource poor countries, and is fuelled by irrational antibiotic (AB) prescribing. We surveyed knowledge, attitudes and practices of AB prescribing among medical students and doctors in Kisangani, DR Congo.
This is the first national Policy to combat AMR in Cambodia. It was developed based on conclusions and recommendations of a country situaytion analysis.

Antibiotic resistance is a natural occurrence caused by mutations in bacteria’s genes. However, inappropriate use of antibiotics accelerates the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. When exposed to antibiotics, susceptible bacteria are killed; while excessive antibiotic use or th...eir use for the wrong reasons can cause bacteria to become resistant and continue to grow and multiply. Antimicrobial resistance represents a big threat to public health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that every year two million Americans are infected with a (multi-)drug resistant bacterium, resulting in 23,000 deaths. The WHO has repeatedly drawn attention to this majo...r health issue. In the worst-case scenario, we will shortly run out of effective antibiotics. Surgery and cancer therapy will then become very dangerous due to the risk of infection associated with such treatments. (Organ) transplantation will become close to impossible as the immunosuppression necessary for transplant patients makes them highly vulnerable to infections. Some infections we can easily treat today could turn deadly. It is therefore conceivable that infectious diseases once again become the leading cause of death as in early 20th century.

La investigación demostró que ya existe cierta actividad en los medios sociales sobre el uso prudente de los antibióticos y que están surgiendo algunos posibles influenciadores. Análogamente, la encuesta de los asociados de la EAAD en toda la UE mostró que los encuestados están empezando a participar activamente en las plataformas de los medios sociales.

Ce document d'orientation est basé sur une recherche sur les activités des médias sociaux liées à l'utilisation des antibiotiques au niveau de l'UE, ainsi que sur une enquête sur les activités des médias sociaux des organisations partenaires de l'EAAD, principalement des organisations de pat...ients et de professionnels de la santé de l'UE. La recherche a montré qu'il existe déjà une certaine activité des médias sociaux sur l'utilisation prudente des antibiotiques et que quelques influenceurs potentiels apparaissent. De même, l'enquête menée auprès des partenaires de l'EAAD à l'échelle de l'UE a montré que les personnes interrogées deviennent actives sur les plateformes de médias sociaux.

Η ανακάλυψη πριν από 80 περίπου χρόνια ότι ουσίες που παράγονται από μύκητες ή βακτήρια μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν θεραπευτικά για την ίαση διαφόρων λοιμώξεων, έφε...ε επανάσταση στα τότε ιατρικά δεδομένα. Οι λοιμώδεις νόσοι αποτελούσαν τότε την πρώτη αιτία θανάτου για κάθε ηλικιακή ομάδα. Το γεγονός αυτό ανατράπηκε με την έναρξη της χρήσης των ουσιών αυτών, που ονομάστηκαν αντιβιοτικά λόγω της ιδιότητας τους να καταστρέφουν τα μικρόβια. Έκτοτε εκατομμύρια ζωές έχουν σωθεί με τη χορήγηση αντιβιοτικών για την αντιμετώπιση σοβαρών λοιμώξεων. Σήμερα, οκτώ δεκαετίες μετά, οι πολύτιμες αυτές για τον άνθρωπο ουσίες χάνουν με συνεχώς επιταχυνόμενο ρυθμό την αποτελεσματικότητά τους λόγω επίτασης του φαινομένου της Μικροβιακής Αντοχής στα αντιβιοτικά.
