ECOHEALTH FIELD-BUILDING LEADE...RSHIP INITIATIVE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

|
Ecohealth Field-building Leade...rship Initiative in Southeast Asia
more
|
Southeast Asia is undergoing r...apid agricultural intensification affecting crops, livestock and plantation forestry. Such agricultural change can be good for human health by improving food security, nutrition and income. However, intensification can also increase the risk of disease, exposure to agro-chemicals and loss of biodiversity. This grant will allow a consortium of research centres in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam to carry out research, capacity building, policy advocacy and networking on the links between changing agricultural practices and human health. At the same time, the consortium will endeavour to strengthen the emerging field of Ecohealth research and practice in Southeast Asia.

Through the BASICS project, Ca...nadian and Indonesian experts assist district and city officials in improving their abilities and systems to deliver services. In 1999, after 30 years of centralized authoritarian rule, Indonesia undertook its most ambitious governance reform:decentralization. Within 2 years, district and city governments and legislatures took on new responsibilities. These include providing water, sanitation, health, and education services. In most cases, local government and elected officials do not have sufficient knowledge or skills to plan, budget for, and deliver these services. At the same time, the project helps officials at the provincial and national levels to more competently guide, support, and supervise district and city governments. In addition, it develops the abilities of some non-government organizations, enabling them to provide input to government planning and budgeting processes (as required by law) and to provide technical services to local governments./ Grâce au projet, des spécialistes canadiens et indonésiens aident les représentants municipaux et de districts à renforcer leurs capacités et leurs systèmes en matière de prestation de services.

The project aims to improve in...comes, health, and the environment of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) economy in targeted areas in Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Java and Sulawesi. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying alternatives to mercury use and training on safe handling of cyanide. The project also supports targeted subnational governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. Activities include: (1) provide training on better practices for men and women miners; (2) provide training to targeted government and civil society groups on ASGM regulation and management; and (3) establish collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives promoting responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy.

This initiative seeks to use i...nnovative and accessible technology to empower citizens, particularly women and marginalized groups, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Barat, to engage in democratic decision making processes, improve their ability to access and understand information, and increase their ability to demand improved government accountability. The initiative's innovative technology applications and platforms are developed through Voto Mobile.Project activities include: (1) developing a mobile phone and web based communication platform that will be both a source of information for stakeholders as well as a channel for the collection, analysis and sharing of data on citizen demands; (2) providing training to citizens and local government officials to increase their competencies with information technology applications and web platforms as well as good governance, transparency, gender equality, and budgeting processes; and (3) assisting village offices and district health staff to engage with citizens on village development and health issues and as administrators of the web platform. This project aims to mitigate ...the impact of the influx of internally displaced persons in the most affected communities of northern Iraq by increasing the resilience of service providers and improving their capacity to effectively respond to the various issues in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector (WASH). It also complements Canada's existing humanitarian relief efforts for internally displaced persons in Iraq, thereby leveraging Canada's response to the crisis for greater impact.Project activities include: (1) investing in community WASH services; (2) improving the water treatment of the Dohuk landfill site; (3) training municipal authorities and key service providers in delivering WASH services; and (4) establishing small-scale rehabilitation and awareness projects with community organisations.

Working in service sectors cri...tical to reconstruction in Iraq, including construction and healthcare, the Bolstering Reconstruction in Iraq through Development, Growth and Employment (BRIDGE) project will offer market-oriented training, leading to employment opportunities for marginalized populations and ex-combatants. The construction sector is anticipated to grow rapidly in Iraq as reconstruction begins post-Daesh, while qualified health professionals are sorely needed to address the high number of conflict-affected individuals who are suffering from long-term medical issues, including disability. The project will also support the long-term development of Iraq's economy by supporting reform of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector: BRIDGE will promote enhanced coordination between government stakeholders such as the Foundation for Technical Education (FTE), training institutions, and the private sector; aim to enhance the gender-responsiveness and environmental sensitivity of curricula; and improve the policy framework for occupational safety standards and gender-sensitive work environments./ To be translated (tbt)

The project aims to recognize ...the urgent need for short-term stabilization in Iraq by supporting the transition into new livelihoods for conflict-affected male and female youth and adult women. Thus, the project focuses on improving their technical and vocational trade skills. Project activities include: (1) facilitating models of effective technical and vocational education training (TVET) practice, by supporting up to 16 vocational training centres (VTCs) to deliver market-relevant, competency-based, gender-responsive vocational training to up to 3,000 youth and women, (2) providing flexible technical assistance and capacity development support to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Governorates, VTCs and other key stakeholders to implement stronger vocational training and services for students, such as career and guidance counselling, (3) strengthening linkages with the private sector to ensure that training programs are relevant to labor market needs, and to provide internships and employment opportunities for youth and women graduates.

This project supports Jordania...n communities hosting significant numbers of Syrian refugees by providing a safe and healthy environment and bolstering confidence in municipal services. The project seeks to improve solid waste management services, infrastructure and working conditions at Al-Akedir, the second-largest landfill in Jordan.Project activities include: (1) increasing the landfill's physical capacity; (2) improving landfill management capacity by providing staff with financial and technical training; and (3) improving processing efficiency by replacing worn-out machinery.

The Global Concessional Financ...ing Facility (GCFF), established in July 2016, is an innovative financing mechanism designed to mobilize financial resources to support middle-income countries affected by refugee crises in the Middle East. The GCFF combines grants from donor countries with loans from multilateral development banks to create concessional financing packages for refugee-affected countries, initially Jordan and Lebanon.Supporting donor countries (nine donor countries) provide funds to the GCFF, with the World Bank acting as Trustee. As a supporting donor, Canada is a member of the Steering Committee for this financing mechanism. GCFF's overall goal is to provide critical medium and long-term development support to refugee populations as well as impacted host communities in Jordan and Lebanon. The GCFF establishes a sustainable, long-term and predictable financing platform for countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by addressing the problems of gaps in multi-year and medium-term financing typically associated with development and emergency humanitarian interventions.Through access to low-interest loans, the GCFF enables critical investments urgently needed to support infrastructure projects and programs in areas such as education, health, and job creation to create sustainable development outcomes. This is expected to help countries better absorb the economic and social shocks of the refugee crisis and assure the well-being of vulnerable populations within their borders.

ENHANCING KENYA'S COMPETITIVEN...ESS IN THE KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY THROUGH UNIVERSITIES' RESEARCH CHAIRS PROGRAM

|
Enhancing Kenya's Competitiven...ess in the Knowledge-Based Economy through Universities' Research Chairs Program
more
|
Kenya's universities face incr...easing pressure to play a more active role in national development over and above their traditional teaching and research functions. This project will contribute to Kenya's social and economic development by enhancing the research capacity of public universities through a Research Chairs Program. To meet the demand for more active involvement in development, universities must interact more with industry and a wide range of social actors. Kenya's development blueprint, known as Vision 2030, identifies universities as key players in the country's social and economic development. Yet local universities remain under-resourced, poorly equipped, burdened by heavy teaching loads, and isolated from their local economic dynamics. Kenya's enactment of the Science, Technology and Innovation Bill, 2012 marks a turning point in the government's interest in and commitment to a science-led development agenda. It also provides an opportunity for IDRC to support the recently created National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation's research and policy agenda. The University Research Chairs Programme will be the first of its kind in Kenya. It is deliberately designed to help local public universities build strategic alliances with industry in the agriculture and health sectors. IDRC's funding to the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation will support one chair over 5 years. The Commission has made a commitment to fund a second chair at the same level.

INSECT FEED FOR POULTRY AND FI...SH PRODUCTION IN KENYA AND UGANDA

Insect Feed for Poultry and Fi...sh Production in Kenya and Uganda
more
|
In many African countries, pou...ltry and fish industries are among the fastest growing agri-businesses. However, expensive inputs such as fish and plants used as feed ingredients are threatening producers' survival. This project aims to address the problem. The researchers want to achieve long-term food and nutritional security by using insects as a reliable, sustainable, safe, and cost-effective source of protein and other nutrients. Their goal? To improve feed production for small-scale poultry and fish farming enterprises in Kenya and Uganda. In nature, insects are feed sources for fish and poultry. They are known to have higher protein content than conventional fish and soybean meals. Insects serve other important purposes. They can be used to convert different types of organic waste materials into animal biomass rich in proteins. This biomass can later be used in animal nutrition, an environmentally friendly way to recycle organic waste. Since protein is the most expensive ingredient in poultry and fish diets, feeding them with insects is a viable option. The study will use a multidisciplinary approach with qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research team will test the technical feasibility and economic profitability of insect-based feeds with the aim of creating favourable social and political conditions for these feeds. Their product development research will evolve based on factors that are critical to success: end-user needs and perceptions, market demand, business, innovation, and technology management. The project will follow a multi-aspect approach to product development that combines socio-economic, technical, laboratory, and field research with regulatory policy. The 30-month project is a partnership between Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi, Kenya.

Pre-Cooked Beans for Improving... Food and Nutrition Security and Income Generation in Kenya and Uganda
more
|
Beans are an important food cr...op that contributes to nutrition security, income, and employment in Kenya and Uganda. While beans are traditionally consumed with little processing, this project will promote value-added pre-cooked beans as a means to advance food security, income generation, and environmental conservation. The use of pre-cooked beans is expected to reduce cooking time, energy, and fuel use. Value-added processing offers great potential for improved nutrition, food security, reduced energy use, environmental conservation, employment opportunities, and overall economic development. The project's whole value chain approach will include research on sustainable models for -increasing production and supply of beans suitable for pre-cooked processing -developing and testing pre-cooked bean products -promoting pre-cooked beans through innovative public and private partnerships The research project is a partnership between the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute and Uganda's National Agriculture Research Organization.

Novel Livestock Vaccines for V...iral Diseases in Africa toward Improved Food Security (CIFSRF Phase 2)

Livestock production is a crit...ical industry in Africa, but suffers large losses to preventable viral infections. This project aims to curb the problem. Researchers will fine-tune prototype vaccines, conduct field tests, and take the first steps to commercializing new vaccines. Africa's livestock industry The research will take place in Kenya and South Africa, where livestock production provides food and animal products for local use and export. South Africa's industry accounts for approximately 49% of agricultural gross domestic product, with an average annual turnover of US$13 billion. Vaccines for healthier livestock Vaccination is a critical tool to help reduce the number of livestock losses to viral infections. This project builds on the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund's (CIFSRF) Phase 1 project. Under that earlier phase, Canadian and South African researchers developed a multivalent, live-attenuated (derived from disease-causing pathogens) lumpy skin disease virus vaccine. Lumpy skin disease affects cattle throughout Africa and is spread through insect bites. The vaccine expresses protective antigens to trigger a protective immune response from -sheep and goat pox -peste des petits ruminants -Rift Valley fever In the first phase, the research team also identified candidate African swine fever virus vaccines. Field trials and commercialization This project will complete the research into these specific vaccines for use in South Africa and Kenya. The project team will -conduct vaccine field trials to evaluate its efficacy -facilitate vaccine licensing and manufacturing by commercial vaccine producers -provide training and gather data from socio-economic studies The goal is to help small-scale livestock farmers who are transitioning to commercial production to use the vaccines. These vaccines are critical. They will enhance food security by increasing production efficiency and reducing the numbers of animals lost to disease. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD).

Development of a Subunit Vacci...ne for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia in Africa (CIFSRF Phase 2)
more
|
This project will allow resear...chers from Canada and Kenya to field trial a vaccine for contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. This endemic livestock disease affects the livelihoods of more than 24 million cattle producers and results in annual losses estimated at US$1 billion across sub-Saharan Africa. About the vaccine Using a novel genomics-based approach, researchers have identified candidate vaccine proteins and demonstrated their ability to elicit protective immune response in cattle. Their work has set the stage for commercial development of a sub-unit vaccine. Field testing and production This scale-up project will formulate selected proteins into vaccines and determine the optimal route of administration, dose, and duration of immunity in cattle. The research team will conduct a large field trial involving 1,500 commercial cattle to assess the vaccine's safety and efficacy. They will define the regulatory pathway for the vaccine to be registered and licensed in Kenya and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, and determine the socio-economic impacts of the sub-unit vaccine. The sub-unit vaccine will be cost-effective, easy to produce, and safe. How it will make a difference The project has the potential to revolutionize the livestock sector in sub-Saharan Africa, create large-scale change, and provide farmers with great economic benefits. It will build leaders and train a new generation of experts in the neglected field of animal health and vaccinology. The project will strengthen partnerships between vaccine manufacturing companies, government regulatory agencies, and pan-African organizations to scale up and deliver the new vaccine to Kenya and other African countries.

EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

|
Dialogue on Research to suppor...t Africa's agricultural transformation
more
|
In 2013, Canada's Internationa...l Development Research Centre and the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) launched the four-year, $15 million Cultivate Africa's Future Fund (CultiAf). The fund was designed to support collaborative, results-driven and innovative research to address issues of post-harvest loss, nutrition, and water use. To date, five large applied projects and three cross-cutting projects have been funded in Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Uganda. These projects, due to be completed in March 2017, have generated innovations, models, and practices that are reducing post-harvest loss, increasing productivity, improving nutrition, building youth-led enterprises, and expanding public-private partnerships and communications technologies for achieving impact at scale. A strategic objective of CultiAf is to use results from the research to inform agriculture and food security policies and programs in the region. Events such as the 2016 African Green Revolution Forum, organized by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and hosted by the Government of Kenya in Nairobi, provide an opportunity to bring the projects together and engage more than 1200 policymakers, researchers, business leaders, farmer organizations and other stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector, on key results and lessons emerging from the program. The Research to support Africa's agricultural transformation dialogue will facilitate the participation of key ACIAR staff, government representatives, heads of institutions, policymakers, and other donors and eminent persons engaged in agriculture and food security in the region. Participants will discuss the results and solutions to reduce post-harvest loss and improve nutrition, ensure research leads to development outcomes, and share experiences and resources to take innovations to scale. The general objective is to convene a dialogue to disseminate innovations from agriculture research with the potential to contribute to African agricultural transformation. The dialogue and related events provide a strategic opportunity to raise IDRC's visibility and position CultiAf as a strategic program for promoting agricultural growth and nutrition security in the African context. IDRC is organizing the dialogue in collaboration with ACIAR. This project is funded through the Cultivate Africa's Future Fund (CultiAF), a joint program of the Australian International Food Security Research Centre of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and IDRC. CultiAF supports research to achieve long-term food security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

SCALING DIGITAL LEARNING IN KE...NYA

|
Scaling digital learning in Ke...nya
more
|
In the developing world, milli...ons of children do not have access to basic quality education. For example, in 2012, only one-third of children in low-income countries made it to the last grade of primary school. These children leave school without acquiring the essential educational competencies of reading, writing, and numeracy. Consequently, these children do not gain the multiple social development benefits that come from greater education, such as reduction of poverty and improved health. For example, a recent analysis for the 2016 Global Education Monitoring report suggested that poverty among the working poor would fall by as much as 39% if workers from disadvantaged backgrounds had similar education levels to those from advantaged backgrounds. The current project applies interactive multimedia software coupled with extensive professional development for teachers to enhance teaching and to improve the learning of children in Kenya. Prior projects explored the feasibility and measured the effectiveness of using ABRACADABRA (ABRA) early literacy software with emerging readers and their teachers in Kenya. Evaluations have shown that ABRA is both a feasible and an effective educational intervention. Students who use the tools on a weekly basis for several months have substantial learning gains. The general objective of this project, implemented by Concordia University, is to achieve significant, scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective increases in student learning alongside enhancements to teaching practices. It will expand the intervention to include a suite of evidence-based educational software tools (the Learning Toolkit+). The project will also explore the challenges involved in scaling up and sustaining the program; deepen our understanding of the relationship between levels of teacher support, teaching practices, and student learning outcomes; and promote improved educational technology-related policies and practices in Kenya.

SUPPORTING THE PRODUCTION OF Q...UALITY LIVESTOCK VACCINES FOR ENTEROTOXAEMIA, PASTEURELLA AND RIFT VALLEY FEVER IN KENYA

|
Supporting the production of q...uality livestock vaccines for enterotoxaemia, pasteurella and Rift Valley fever in Kenya
more
|
It is estimated that Kenya has... 18.2 million cattle, 16.3 million sheep, and 24.6 million goats. The majority of these animals (80%) are held by smallholder farmers who depend on livestock for their livelihoods. About a quarter of these animals succumb to various preventable diseases causing significant economic and social hardship to the farmers. This also leads to a negative impact on the national economy as livestock contributes 10-17% to the gross domestic product. Among the diseases are haemorrhagic septicaemia, enterotoxaemia and Rift Valley fever, all of which are prevalent in Kenya and in East Africa in general. Rift Valley fever is of special concern as it is transmissible between livestock and humans. The objective of this project is to increase the availability of vaccines through the supply of vaccine bulk antigens from MCI Santé Animale of Morocco to the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute. The project will support technology transfer and establishment of product formulation and quality systems that will enable the Kenyan Institute to produce and register three new vaccines of international quality standards. This project will also pilot a model for bulk antigen processing for other vaccine types in Africa that can later be scaled up for improved availability of high-quality vaccines to smallholder livestock keepers. This project is funded by the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). LVIF is a partnership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

This project will generate evi...dence to support effective, integrated and scalable early childhood development interventions for disadvantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries. The study aims to understand vulnerability and resilience in early years of development and effective responses to support Early Childhood Development in the context of displacement. Early Childhood Development research has traditionally focused on single-intervention and regular population. This project will assess effectiveness of an integrated package of interventions in critical areas of child development in a Nairobi informal settlement that is home to internally and externally displaced families. The project will assess feasibility and affordability of the package of interventions and the cost of scaling-up in the studied communities. The project will also build capacity in the science of Early Childhood Development for frontline worker, researchers and leaders in policy and practice. Project outputs will close the gap in the global body of knowledge on early childhood development specifically related to marginalized and refugee/displaced settings. The Nairobi project will be co-led by Aga Khan University's Institute of Human Development and Sinai Health System. It will be part of comparative but separate global work on Early Childhood Development underway in South Africa, Bangladesh, and India that is being conducted by the Alliance for Human Development and its local implementing partners. IDRC and Aga Khan Foundation Canada are equally co-funding this CAD 2 million project.

ENGINEERING OF AFRICAN SWINE F...EVER VIRUS USING SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY TO ACCELERATE VACCINE

Engineering of African swine f...ever virus using synthetic biology to accelerate vaccine
more
|
African swine fever is a devas...tating hemorrhagic disease with mortality rates up to 100% in infected herds. It is prevalent in many sub-Saharan African countries, causing major economic losses and threatening food security. Due to its sustained occurrence and the ever-increasing global traffic of people and goods, African swine fever poses an added global threat. There is no vaccine for the virus that causes this disease. A major roadblock has been the lack of convenient genetic tools to study this pathogen, with periods of up to a year of labour-intensive effort just to generate one or two modified viruses (to enable vaccine candidates to be generated). This project will leverage new synthetic biology tools, including CRISPR-Cas, to break down the genome of African swine fever and then reassemble it into new live vaccine candidates with the capacity for faster reproduction. This breakdown will enable the use of bioinformatics to identify proteins that induce protective immune responses as well as eliminate those responsible for disease. The reassembled virus will have the capacity to replicate as well. The major effect of doing so will be the capacity to perform rapid and genome-wide modification of African swine fever virus and hence, significantly reduce the time to develop a variety of attenuated strains that can be tested as vaccine candidates. The research team expects to define the proteins in the African swine fever virus, generate a number of vaccine candidates using the CRISPR-cas technology, present a method for assembling the African swine fever virus genome, and present a method for booting the synthetic genome. This project is a collaboration between the J. Craig Venter Institute and the International Livestock Research Institute with some additional collaboration from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Germany. It is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund is a partnership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. CUSTOM DESIGN OF MULTI-COMPONE...NT NANOPARTICLE VACCINES FOR EAST COAST FEVER

Custom design of multi-compone...nt nanoparticle vaccines for East Coast fever
more
|
East Coast fever (ECF), a leuk...emia-like tick-borne disease of cattle, is caused by the protozoan blood parasite Theileria parva. ECF is a leading cause of cattle mortality in most of sub-Saharan Africa. The acute and fatal nature of the disease poses major challenges to disease control. Treatment of ECF, or prevention by use of poisons to reduce tick infestation, are expensive and rarely accessible to poor farmers. A live vaccine involving administration of tick-derived parasites and simultaneous antibiotic treatment has been available for over 40 years, but is difficult to produce and distribute as it requires high technical expertise and storage and transport in liquid nitrogen (-80?C). These drawbacks have hampered the widespread use of this vaccine and the disease has continued to have a devastating impact on poor smallholder farmers. The objective of this project is to reformulate the partially-protective major sporozoite antigen p67 of Theileria parva into a nanoparticle that generates high antibody levels and better vaccine efficacy. Using a cutting-edge computation protein nanoparticle platform, different configurations of nanoparticles will be produced to test the best options to co-display multiple copies of key components of the p67 antigen. In addition, two immunomodulatory proteins will be incorporated to enhance the quality and duration of immunity. The best nanoparticle combinations of the p67 antigen and immunomodulatory proteins will be tested in a disease-challenge study in cattle. This will enable the development of a viable vaccine candidate that can be produced commercially in a potential second phase of this project. This project is a collaboration between the University of Washington and the International Livestock Research Institute. The team will also collaborate with scientists from the University of Copenhagen, University of Toronto, and Atreca Inc. (a private US biotechnology company). This project is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund, a partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. FIRST ALL-AFRICAN CONGRESS AND... EXHIBITION

First all-African congress and... exhibition

Food insecurity remains one of... the major challenges of the 21st century, with the majority of affected people living in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa's population is expected to double from the current 1.2 billion to 2.5 billion during this century. To meet the food and nutrition needs of this rising population, food production will have to increase by 70%. Ensuring proper and better use of food and reducing post-harvest losses is another way of increasing food availability and meeting the needs of a growing population. A recent assessment of the magnitude of post-harvest losses showed losses of between 3% and 55.9% depending on the crop, more than 80 cases was related to storage. Reduction of food loss and waste is an important and viable strategy to ensure food and nutritional security in efficient and sustainable food systems. The University of Nairobi and a consortium of universities and research and development institutions in Africa, Kenya's Ministry of Agriculture, and Livestock and Fisheries, in conjunction with the World Food Preservation Centre, are organizing the first-ever all-Africa post-harvest congress and exhibition in Nairobi with the theme Reducing food losses and waste: Sustainable solutions for Africa. The congress and exhibition will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, farmers, and private sector organizations working on post-harvest management. It will also showcase the technologies, practices, strategies, and policies that have worked (or can work) to reduce food loss and waste. IDRC will support the development of a database of technologies and practices that have worked to reduce post-harvest losses and their impacts. This initiative will build on a body of work supported by IDRC on post-harvest management. Some of the technologies and solutions developed with this support will be presented at the congress and included in the database.
