The project supports the Unite...d Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) COVID-19 response plan in areas of Iraq that are particularly ill-equipped to manage and/or hardest hit by the pandemic. In response to COVID-19, a portion of Canadian funding to the Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) has been reallocated to support UNDP's COVID-19 response plan. UNDP's COVID-19 response plan seeks to: (1) prevent the spread of COVID-19, manage confirmed cases and save lives, (2) strengthen the Government of Iraq's (GOI) crisis management and response, and (3) support the GOI in designing post-COVID-19 recovery strategies to address the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19. Project activities include: (1) raising community awareness and sharing official/authorized guidance on COVID-19, including key gender messages, through an online platform, (2) equipping three medical labs with priority medical equipment to strengthen testing capacity, (3) equipping ten healthcare facilities with 180 beds and 180 single-patient airborne infection isolation rooms, in addition to medical furniture/equipment and personal protective equipment for healthcare workers, (4) supporting the United Nations Country Team in Iraq to develop a gender-sensitive post-COVID-19 Recovery Strategy, (5) reaching 25,000 people, particularly women and youth, through social cohesion activities, (6) undertaking three gender-sensitive socio-economic needs and impact assessments, including an assessment on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the most vulnerable groups, and (7) identifying gender-sensitive short- and medium-term recovery strategies for Iraq.

January 2020 – In 2020, ther...e are an estimated 4.1 million Iraqis in need of humanitarian assistance, of which 1.77 million are in acute need. Out of the 6 million displaced people during the conflict against Daesh, more than 1.4 million people remain internally displaced. Those directly affected by the conflict against Daesh, particularly those who were displaced and whose lives and livelihoods were uprooted and destroyed, continue to require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. With GAC's support, Oxfam-Québec is providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and protection assistance to vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and host communities in Iraq. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating water supply systems and water treatment plants, (2) providing sanitation facilities and solid and medical waste management systems in health centres, (3) delivering hygiene promotion activities, (4) providing emergency cash-for-protection grants or multi-purpose cash assistance to vulnerable women-headed households, (5) providing psychosocial support activities, and (6) providing training to community-based structures, including women and youth groups, on protection monitoring, case identification, and referrals.

The Jordan Health Fund for Ref...ugees supports Jordan's Ministry of Health in ensuring better health outcomes for hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, particularly women and girls. Along with other donors, Canada's contribution offsets the additional costs of providing health services to Syrians through Jordan's public health system. Project activities include: (1) provision of primary and secondary health care services in Ministry of Health facilities and, (2) procurement of medicines, medical solutions, consumables and supplies. This extension will support COVID-19 response measures identified in Jordan's National Response Plan. This multi-donor initiative is expected to benefit more than 670,000 registered Syrian refugees as well as registered refugees of other nationalities in Jordan. As with all pooled fund projects, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Jordan to promote effective, transparent, and accountable country systems, increase donor coordination and harmonization, and strengthen mutual accountability. This kind of assistance also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government, and partners, which helps to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, and long-term development results. This project is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. / TBC

In order to respond to the COV...ID-19 crisis, the Project will support national COVID-19 preparedness and response activities in Kenya and Guatemala. The project focuses on: (1) infection prevention control, (2) dissemination of messages on prevention of the spread of COVID-19, (3) training health staff, midwives, and community volunteers, (4) provision of inputs for handwashing solutions and water storage, (5) community-level empowerment for mothers and caregivers, (6) sensitization of healthcare workers on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition, (7) supporting the inclusion of emergency prevention and response actions related to COVID-19. This project seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. Many women and children are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality in Guatemala and Kenya where high rates for chronic malnutrition and infant mortality, as well as high numbers of deaths due to complications from child birth prevailed over the last years. The project focuses on: (1) increasing the effectiveness of community referral systems, (2) increasing awareness of existing health services, and (3) strengthening the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. It works towards improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant nutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as by looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, the project strengthens local nutrition related health information systems through improved management of data collection and dissemination, and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly, and more than 880,000 people indirectly, from activities led in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health, and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations.

March 2020 - A new coronavirus... emerged in Wuhan City in the Hubei Province of China. On January 30th, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, after human-to-human transmission caused the disease to spread globally. On March 11th, 2020, the outbreak was officially declared a pandemic. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is coordinating with all National Societies, especially those with active cases, to support with monitoring, scenario planning, and risk analysis in countries affected by the outbreak. With GAC's support, National Societies are working to save lives and help reduce the vulnerability of communities and people affected by the pandemic through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities. Project activities include: (1) providing ongoing monitoring and analysis of regional trends and risks, particularly amongst migrant and displaced populations, (2) conducting household visits to determine needs of vulnerable people and provide basic medical assistance, and (3) distributing food, hygiene products, and medicines to vulnerable people, including people in isolation.

Community approaches for impro...ved health outcomes of urban refugees in Lebanon during the COVID-19 pandemic

|
This project will strengthen L...ebanon's public health response to COVID-19 and future health emergencies in fragile settings. It will use a multi-pronged approach to meet the needs of refugees and share knowledge to benefit similar needs in Jordan. First, there will be a critical assessment and analysis of the rapid-response actions and policies that have guided Lebanon's management of the pandemic at the national level. This will be complemented by interventions to manage and mitigate risks posed by COVID-19 at the community level. The project will also build capacity for pandemic responses at the local and regional levels. Experiences at the local, national, and global levels will be triangulated to identify good practices and recommend changes. The project will produce guidance to inform a robust national public health response system that benefits both refugee and host communities and that is gender-responsive and inclusive of diverse populations.

January 2020 – With the Syri...a crisis in its ninth year, Lebanon continues to host over an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees, most of whom reside in host communities. As personal savings erode and needs outpace available international assistance, over 70% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon now live below the poverty line. Hosting the highest per capita concentration of refugees worldwide has strained the abilities of local communities to provide essential services, and threatens a delicate balance of peace in the country. With GAC's support, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and shelter services to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese. Project activities include: (1) water trucking to vulnerable households, (2) constructing/rehabilitating gender-sensitive latrines, (3) providing rental assistance, and (4) providing protection support.

In order to respond to the COV...ID-19 pandemic, the proposed amendment will enable the Organization to implement a hygiene behaviour change response aimed at slowing the transmission of the virus. The COVID-19 response efforts of HerWASH include promotion and awareness of improved hygiene behaviour in healthcare facilities and communities and of good menstrual hygiene practices among women and girls in support of the project's SRHR goals and results. This project aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in Burkina Faso, Liberia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone, through menstrual health and hygiene interventions. Poor menstrual health and hygiene exacts a tremendous human and financial toll. A growing body of global research links menstruation with school absenteeism, limited mobility, and lost workplace productivity. Project activities include: (1) infrastructure work to refurbish latrines so that they are secure, accessible and equipped to serve the needs of women and girls for menstrual hygiene management (including private space with adequate water supply for washing and disposal facilities for sanitary pads) at schools, healthcare facilities and in communities, (2) improving and/or developing supply chains for menstrual hygiene products that present economic opportunities to engage local business, women entrepreneurs and youth-led groups, and (3) policy interventions to examine national and district plans, policies and budgets in order to provide adequate consideration of the menstrual health and hygiene needs of women and adolescent girls in schools, communities and healthcare centers. This project is expected to directly benefit 91,450 people, of which 72% are women, including youth under the age of 19. The project is led by WaterAid Canada, in partnership with Canada World Youth and Simavi. This project aims to lessen th...e damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on poor and marginalized communities in targeted areas of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. Aligned with national pandemic response plans, this project works to help reduce the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, by increasing the capacity of health care centers, health care workers, and communities to prevent and respond to the pandemic. Project activities include: (1) providing training to facility- and community-based health workers to better identify and respond to COVID-19, (2) providing health centers with essential hygiene and sanitation supplies, including locally-procured personal protective equipment, (3) raising awareness about COVID-19 prevention and safe hygiene and sanitation practices among community members, (4) increasing access to essential hygiene and sanitation supplies at the household level, and (5) strengthening community-based sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response mechanisms. This project expects to directly benefit 59,000 women, girls, men, and boys in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. This project also expects to indirectly benefit an additional 1,075,000 women, men, girls and boys.

This project builds on a previ...ous project that supported the Malian Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. The delivery of health services in times of stability as well as in times of emergency is critical in Mali where there are significant governance and security challenges and where there are low levels of economic and social development. This project is providing additional funds in response to the immediate needs of the COVID-19 pandemic to support the national health system efforts, while safeguarding the provision of critical reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services for women and girls. Project activities include: (1) training health staff and community health workers in targeted areas of Sikasso to safely and effectively respond to epidemics, especially COVID-19, (2) rehabilitating and/or installing water sanitation and hygiene facilities in targeted health facilities/communities in Sikasso, (3) installing hand washing stations in highly vulnerable communities and high-risk areas such as markets, churches, mosques, borders entry points, (4) providing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) materials and personal protection equipment to health centers/integrated community case management ( iCCM) sites in Sikasso to effectively prevent COVID-19, (5) adapting current communication strategies, including radiobroadcasting messages, to demystify rumours and provide information on prevention, protection and coping practices related to COVID-19, (6) delivering targeted communication for couples, pregnant women, adolescents, the elderly and disabled through household visits and community demonstrations by Red Cross volunteers, community health workers and gender champions accompanied by religious leaders and community health associations, (7) providing adapted psycho-social support to Covid-19 patients and their relatives in Sikasso, (8) training and supervising staff and volunteers on early warning and case detection through contact tracing to strengthen community-based surveillance, and (9) updating the Malian Red Cross Preparedness for Effective Response Assessment to identify and correct gaps and areas that need strengthening, including supporting women's participation as decision-makers in the response, and support the implementation of prioritized actions, including linking to and operationalization of Malian Red Cross Emergency Operations Centre. A consortium led by the Canadian Red Cross Society, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and collaboration with the local partner and the Malian Red cross implemented this project. The activities of the COVID-19 response in the two districts of Sikasso (Sikasso and Kadiolo) will reach a total of 386,526 direct beneficiaries (including 194,848 females) as well as 646,472 indirect beneficiaries (including 325,887 females).

This project supports activiti...es from the previously funded project, Durable Integration of Agropastoral Graduates (IDDA), to respond to the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis in Benin, Haiti, and Mali. These activities aim to ensure the continuity of educational programs and to better equip the communities in mitigating the impacts of the crisis, particularly for women and girls. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the communities' awareness on hygiene and safe practices through awareness-raising operations, (2) adapting the education programs offered by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to make them available remotely, and to ensure continuity of education in times of crisis, (3) promoting the safe re-opening of TVET establishments targeted by the IDDA project, with an emphasis on reintegrating adolescent girls and young women affected by the crisis, and (4) supporting young people vulnerable to the economic impacts of the crisis, especially young women, by promoting self-employment in the agricultural/agri-food sector.

This project aims to promote g...ender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by combating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the southern, northern and central regions of Mali, including Gao, Timbuktu, Mopti, Segou and Bamako regions. Specifically, it works to help to remove barriers that prevent access to comprehensive and quality sexual and reproductive health services, by strengthening women's and girls' capacities to provide strong leadership and decision-making power for their health, and by helping to change the attitudes and behaviours of leaders and communities in favour of respect for gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights. It targets more than 500,000 women and girls, 50 women's organizations in these regions and is expected to reach a total of 2,500,000 adolescents and youth. In the context of COVID-19, the incremental budget will allow the supply of personal protective equipment for healthcare personnel, particularly midwives and obstetrician nurses, the search for active cases ,and research on the incidence of the pandemic and its impact on women's health.

March 2020 - A new coronavirus... emerged in Wuhan City in the Hubei Province of China. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, after human-to-human transmission caused the disease to spread globally. On March 11, 2020, the outbreak was officially declared a pandemic. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is scaling up its response to the crisis, including through adapting its programmes to address the needs and challenges related to the pandemic in conflict settings. The ICRC is coordinating with rest of the Red Cross Movement including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and National Societies to support a local and global response to the crisis.
