April 2020 - In response to th...e coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, the United Nations launched the Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) on March 25th, 2020. The GHRP seeks to respond to the direct public health and immediate humanitarian consequences of the pandemic. The GHRP's three strategic priorities are: (1) containing the spread of the pandemic, (2) decreasing the deterioration of human assets and rights, social cohesion and livelihoods, and (3) protecting, assisting and advocating for refugees, internally displaced people, migrants and host communities particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been monitoring the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, migrants, returnees, and host communities. As part of the GHRP, IOM is responding to new and additional needs, which have emerged as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak in humanitarian situations, including facilitating access to essential relief items and adequate living conditions for crisis-affected populations. With the support of GAC and other donors, IOM is providing assistance in multiple sectors, including health, camp coordination and camp management, displacement tracking, protection, shelter, emergency non-food items, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services. Project activities include: (1) providing life-saving primary health care and critical medical supplies, (2) providing WASH services in health-care facilities and points of entry, (3) enhancing national capacity for detection, (4) strengthening Community Event-Based Surveillance including by linking mobility information to surveillance data, particularly among border communities to identify high-risk transmission mobility corridors/areas, (5) ensuring the continuation of services, including primary health care and WASH facilities, (6) strengthening the access to social networks and livelihoods for migrants, IDPs, and other vulnerable populations, (7) providing assistance to stranded migrants, (8) strengthening existing protection mechanisms and social services to identify, support and refer people in need of care or protection, and (9) disseminating key messages on service delivery, health and hygiene to migrants, IDPs and other vulnerable populations.

This project works to provide ...funding to local CSOs in fragile and conflict-affected states, who are actively engaged in delivering key resources and services to address the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 outbreaks have had significant, negative impacts in many countries. These impacts have been amplified in fragile and conflict-affected contexts where conflict drivers are further exacerbated. Local CSOs around the world are playing key roles in supporting efforts to respond to, and stem the spread of COVID-19. Project activities include: (1) persuading populations to follow public health directives, (2) advocating for specific needs for women and girls in response to COVID-19, and (3) supporting women who constitute 70% of the workers and care givers in the health and social sector globally, and are on the frontlines of the response.

The COVID19 pandemic poses a t...hreat to gains made in the SHOW project related to gender transformative MNCH and SRHR outcomes in the countries and communities where we operate. In order to both protect those important, measurable results and to prevent the most severe impacts of COVID19, Plan Canada proposes to i) increase demand for COVID19 related messages and prevention measures, and ongoing demand for MNCH/SRHR services, ii) support health system strengthening for COVID19 response within broader C19 national plans and continuity of MNCH/SRH services during the pandemic and post pandemic periods, iii) enhance community and government access to reliable, timely and effective use of data in the response to COVID19, and iv) undertake public engagement to inform Canadians on the COVID19 response in developing countries and better understand that the response must be global in nature.

The proposed project would pro...vide 5 years of institutional support to icddr,b, a leading global health research centre located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The institutional support would include capital investments in improved research technologies, develop human resources, and enable the organization to pursue its strategic research agenda to produce evidence of effective low-cost health solutions, including in SRHR. icddr,b's mandate is to find low-cost innovative solutions to public health problems facing low- and middle-income countries through scientific research. The five main areas of icddr'b's work are: 1) innovative research to identify low-cost solutions to public health problems in poor countries, 2) implementation and scale-up of proven public health interventions, 3) policy impact through delivering evidence for effective health strategies and policy interventions, 4) humanitarian action (including hospitals and laboratories, disease outbreak responses and training), and 5) the Matlab Demographic Surveillance site, the world's most comprehensive and longest running longitudinal population study, which is also a testing ground for research on global vaccines, community health care delivery, reducing maternal mortality and malnutrition, the identification of emerging diseases, and the effects of environmental and socio-cultural factors on health. The additional activities to be undertaken by icddr,b to combat COVID-19 are: training healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients in Bangladesh, strengthening testing capacity for COVID-19 in 10 districts in Bangladesh, conducting clinical trials for prevention and treatment of COVID-19 with drug and vitamin regimes for front-line workers and at risk populations, and treatment for those unable to access standard treatment, treatment of COVID-19 patients with severe pneumonia by trialing an adaptive version of locally made mechanical ventilator, assessing case management capacity of public health care services regarding COVID-19, assessment of food insecurity and undernutrition among urban and rural people during and after the pandemic in Bangladesh and development of a guideline for providing them a basic food package for maintaining daily dietary requirements to combat undernutrition.

This project aims to decrease ...coronavirus (COVID-19) related mortality and morbidity, among affected populations, especially those experiencing marginalization and/or vulnerability in Cox's Bazar. The project works to mitigate the risk of community spread and increase local response capacity. Bangladesh is at a high risk given its slow response to the pandemic, weak health care system capacity, and high population density. For the host communities in Cox's Bazar, the second poorest and most vulnerable district in Bangladesh even before the influx of the Rohingya in August 2017, COVID-19 has put immense pressure on the availability and delivery of essential health services, which were already scarce and overstretched. In addition, there are major concerns around a large-scale COVID-19 outbreak in the dense Rohingya refugee camps, due to limited health system capacity, and increasing restrictions on humanitarian access to the camps. Project activities include: (1) procuring and distributing medical equipment and medical supplies (cleaning materials, soap, paper towels, tables, chairs, benches, beds, fans, desks, lights, floor mats, etc.) for health facilities, (2) providing personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical professionals in primary healthcare centers in the refugee camps, (3) distributing masks, soap, and sanitizer supplies to community health workers and clients visiting health centers, (4) providing capacity building and training on case management and infection prevention and control to public health care professionals and service providers (doctors, midwives, paramedics, lab technicians, etc.), (5) providing communication and community engagement measures such as, training on effective engagement in case management, infection prevention, and risk reduction and awareness, particularly by women health workers communication actions at the district, divisional and national levels, including providing up-to-date information on COVID-19 to doctors and field support teams at the community level, and (6) organizing door-to-door awareness building sessions for self-reporting and maintaining social distancing within communities. The projects' ongoing engagement with relevant civil society, government, and community stakeholders are expected to directly benefit approximately 8,132 individuals (of which 7,587 are women).

March 2020 - A new coronavirus... emerged in Wuhan City in the Hubei Province of China. On January 30th, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, after human-to-human transmission caused the disease to spread globally. On March 11th, 2020, the outbreak was officially declared a pandemic. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is coordinating with all National Societies, especially those with active cases, to support with monitoring, scenario planning, and risk analysis in countries affected by the outbreak. With GAC's support, National Societies are working to save lives and help reduce the vulnerability of communities and people affected by the pandemic through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities. Project activities include: (1) providing ongoing monitoring and analysis of regional trends and risks, particularly amongst migrant and displaced populations, (2) conducting household visits to determine needs of vulnerable people and provide basic medical assistance, and (3) distributing food, hygiene products, and medicines to vulnerable people, including people in isolation.

In order to respond to the COV...ID-19 pandemic, the proposed amendment will enable the Organization to implement a hygiene behaviour change response aimed at slowing the transmission of the virus. The COVID-19 response efforts of HerWASH include promotion and awareness of improved hygiene behaviour in healthcare facilities and communities and of good menstrual hygiene practices among women and girls in support of the project's SRHR goals and results. This project aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in Burkina Faso, Liberia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone, through menstrual health and hygiene interventions. Poor menstrual health and hygiene exacts a tremendous human and financial toll. A growing body of global research links menstruation with school absenteeism, limited mobility, and lost workplace productivity. Project activities include: (1) infrastructure work to refurbish latrines so that they are secure, accessible and equipped to serve the needs of women and girls for menstrual hygiene management (including private space with adequate water supply for washing and disposal facilities for sanitary pads) at schools, healthcare facilities and in communities, (2) improving and/or developing supply chains for menstrual hygiene products that present economic opportunities to engage local business, women entrepreneurs and youth-led groups, and (3) policy interventions to examine national and district plans, policies and budgets in order to provide adequate consideration of the menstrual health and hygiene needs of women and adolescent girls in schools, communities and healthcare centers. This project is expected to directly benefit 91,450 people, of which 72% are women, including youth under the age of 19. The project is led by WaterAid Canada, in partnership with Canada World Youth and Simavi.

This project aims to provide e...mergency health services to populations affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the regions of Sahel, Centre Nord, Nord and Boucle du Mouhoun in Burkina Faso. The project supports a programming that offers primary health care incorporating sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including gender-based violence (GBV). The project aims to improve the health of populations, especially women and girls, by broadening primary health care service coverage, which includes SRH, in regions with the highest concentration of internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso. Two areas of focus are anticipated: (1) ensuring access to primary health care and sexual and reproductive health services in the context of COVID-19, and (2) ensuring that the intervention's target population uses the available services. COVID-19 considerations are incorporated into the health services to help address the needs of the population, particularly women and girls, and thus promote and maintain access to quality health care and continued use of the services.

The project aims to implement ...a gender-responsive and conflict-sensitive education program for girls affected by the Burundian refugee crisis in Burundi and Tanzania. The project seeks to reduce barriers to education, and build resilience among Burundian refugee and returnee girls, including those with disabilities, on both sides of the Burundi-Tanzanian border. The project also aims to develop and test a new model of conflict-sensitive, play-based, and gender-responsive alternative learning, which supports teenage girls, including adolescent mothers and girls with disabilities, to access alternative forms of education and re-enter the school system. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality of learning environments in refugee camps to provide gender-responsive, supportive, and participatory learning, (2) establishing support mechanisms for teachers and training them on gender-responsive and inclusive Play-Based Learning (PBL), (3) increasing community engagement through leaders, coaches, and parents to reduce barriers that are preventing education for girls, including those with disabilities, and (4) supporting girls clubs and peer groups to develop knowledge and skills in and out of school. The project works in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council, an independent humanitarian organization working in more than 30 countries to help people forced to flee, helping to save lives and rebuilding futures. The project leverages Right to Play's unique and proven gender-responsive PBL methodology and the Norwegian Refugee Council's experience and expertise in conflict-sensitive education.

March 2020 – In response to ...the COVID19 global pandemic, the United Nations launched the Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) on 25 March 2020. The GHRP seeks to respond to the direct public health and immediate humanitarian consequences of the pandemic. It has three strategic priorities: 1) containing the spread of the pandemic, 2) decreasing the deterioration of human assets and rights, social cohesion and livelihoods, and 3) protecting, assisting and advocating for refugees, internally displaced people, migrants and host communities particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. The Global Humanitarian Response Plan is a joint and collective effort among all stakeholders, facilitated at the global level by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). As leader of the Inter-agency Steering Committee, OCHA works to oversee the global level coordination, and liaise with other stakeholders, such as the UN Crisis Management Team, as needed. OCHA's primary mandate is to oversee the coordination of international humanitarian responses, in partnership with national and international actors, in order to achieve more coherent and effective humanitarian action. This grant represents Canada's support to OCHA in Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
