AUTONOMOUS VISUAL DETECTION OF... BIO-HAZARDS LOCATIONS WITH AERIAL DRONES

Autonomous Visual Detection of... Bio-hazards Locations with Aerial Drones
more

Dengue and Zika are arboviral ...viruses that affect a significant portion of the world population causing many deaths. While there is no direct correlation between the income level and the possibility of being infected by the dengue virus, the economic impact on the poor is much larger since the funds spent by households below the poverty-line for the treatment of dengue amounts to 93.7% of their monthly per capita income even though free health care is available in Sri Lanka. The main vectors species of the Dengue and Zika viruses are mosquitoes that breed in very slow-flowing or standing water pools. It is important to reduce and control such breeding grounds to contain the spread of the diseases. We propose to use drones, unmanned micro aerial vehicles (UAV), to locate mosquito breeding grounds. UAVs equipped with cameras, accelerometers and other sensors can provide close-range aerial-inspection-capabilities. Using drones is a low-cost and hence sustainable solution. The main scientific challenges are to conceive visual-based, active sensing functionality to allow drones autonomously locate the relevant sites with little to no human intervention. Further, drones must be enabled to maneuver in confined areas to carry out the required tasks in built-up urban environments. Lastly, we must adaptively coordinate the operation of multiple drones to balance the application load among available resources, particularly with respect to the limited battery lifetime.

Immunity to malaria: importanc...e of parasite diversity and host memory
more
|
Malaria is a potentially fatal... infection in non-immune individuals. An efficacious vaccine is urgently needed. Given the extensive diversity of many of the potential vaccine targets, it is important to begin to understand how this diversity can be overcome to inform vaccine development. The aim of this project is to elucidate the mechanisms of acquisition and maintenance of immunity to malaria, focusing on antigen diversity and immunological memory. A novel innovative assay that allows for analyses of MBC responses against multiple antigens simultaneously and cross-reactivity on cellular level will be used. The studies are performed in well-defined and closely monitored cohorts in Kenya, as well as travellers in Sweden. Individuals returning from the tropics, and who are subsequently treated for malaria in a malaria-free area offer a unique opportunity to study infection and immunological memory in the absence of re-exposure. We will assess the breadth, magnitude and longevity of humoral and cellular immune responses in individuals with first and repeated infections. We will study how the preexisting immune repertoire predicts the outcome of an infection in semi-immune adult volunteers in Kenya. In a cohort of children we will assess these antimalrial immune responses and how coinfecting asymptomatic malaria infections impacts on the immune responses and outcome. The overall aim is to contribute to the development of an efficacious multicomponent vaccine against malaria.

Antimicrobial resistance has b...ecome a major threat to human health and development. As our currently used antibiotics lose efficiency, we risk rapidly increasing number of untreatable infections leading to an increased number of lethal cases, longer hospital stays, and related suffering and economic burden. Antibiotic resistance is expected to hit developing countries especially hard, with 90% of the lethal infections predicted to happen in Africa and Asia. This study aims to make use of East African indigenous knowledge to use natural resources in finding new ways to control bacterial infections. Following an ethnomedical survey, medicinal plants will be collected in Kenya and Tanzania. Their constituents will be isolated, and identified by NMR and MS analyses. The bioactivity and toxicity of the isolated constituents will be determined using bacterial and cell-based assays. The biochemical pathways targeted by the most promising bioactive substances will be identified by chemical genomics. Advanced NMR techniques will subsequently be used to identify the binding mode of the substances to their protein targets to support their development into drugs.Besides achieving high scientific goals, the project aims the multidisciplinary training of East African PhD students. It will support the economic development of East Africa by strategic knowledge transfer and by promoting patient safety on the use of plants as a result of the scientific investigation of ethnomedical practices.

IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIAL IN...FECTIONS AND ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN LOW INCOME COUNTRIES BY RAPID OPTICAL DNA MAPPING

Identification of bacterial in...fections and antibiotic resistance in low income countries by rapid optical DNA mapping
more
|
Antibiotic resistance is one o...f the main threats to global health. The situation is particularly alarming in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) since surveillance systems and easy-to-use tools for monitoring are lacking. The goal of this project is to use Optical DNA Mapping (ODM) as a genetic tool in LMICs. ODM is a method for coarse genetic analysis of bacteria that identifies the bacteria and reveals the resistance genes they are carrying. The method will be implemented at the neonatal ward at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We have selected this setting for several reasons. First of all, Tanzania is one of many LMICs where simple microscopes are used in the clinical setting to diagnose tuberculosis. We will in this project repurpose these microscopes for ODM, which means that there is no extra cost for infrastructure. Second, we selected neonates because these patients are the most sensitive to resistant infections and have a high mortality. We therefore believe that any intervention that will result from this project will have immediate impact regarding decreased mortality. The project includes development of the ODM assay in Sweden, including adaptation to simple microscopy, a screen for resistant bacteria at the neonatal ward at MNH, teaching of staff at MNH in handling the ODM technique and finally implementation of ODM in routine testing in the neonatal ward at MNH.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the world...'s number one infectious killer and a public health threat, especially in low-middle-income countries. Poor case detection is a critical gap in TB care, where 40% of the world's 10 million cases are not detected (WHO 2017). Many of these patients are lost in the pre-treatment period, up to 83% in Uganda (Shete 2017). A major reason for this is the social and economic barriers that impede access to care (Shete 2015). Accordingly, WHO's End TB Strategy proposes the use of social protection interventions as part of TB care (Uplekar 2015). How best to implement and scale-up these interventions is still unknown. The purpose of our research is to develop an evidence base for the effectiveness of social protection interventions in enabling completion of diagnostic evaluation and treatment initiation for TB patients in Uganda. We will use formative mixed-methods research to identify social and economic barriers that impede access and adherence to care. We will design and evaluate a context specific, multi-faceted social protection intervention to overcome these barriers. Our outcomes will be the proportion of: (1) diagnosed patients who initiate TB treatment, (2) TB affected households who suffer catastrophic costs. Working closely with the Ugandan government, our results will be used to effect changes in health and development policy to improve health outcomes for TB patients, and to reduce the socio-economic risks for this vulnerable population.

Diagnostic devices for point-o...f-care are increasingly recognized as critical to meeting global health priorities, and are a cornerstone of infectious and non-infectious disease detection as well as clinical case management and control. Disadvantaged populations often lack access to well-equipped laboratory infrastructure, hindering efforts to control disease impact, spread, and resulting in a major source of health inequity. The Division of Nanobiotechnology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology has been active in developing and prototyping rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests suitable for resource-limited settings. In collaboration with the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, the Mbarara Regional University Hospital and Doctors Without Border's Epicentre, we will prototype and test a novel molecular diagnostic tool thatcan rapidly detect an infectious disease agent known to cause neurological infections such as meningitis. This postdoctoral research project aim at characterise and prototype an affordable, rapid, specific, and sensitive, POC tool for use in children with suspected nervous system infection and to evaluate its clinical usability in resource-limited setting. In conclusion, developing an affordable, easy to use POC that can aid medical scientists and clinicians in rural settings has potential to close the diagnostic gap between low and high resource setting. This project is an interdisciplinary cooperation between Uganda and Sweden.

Malaria, diabetes and metaboli...c syndrome: investigating the double burden of disease
more
|
The aim of this collaborative ...project is to investigate whether diabetes and obesity affects the risk of severe malaria, and whether these underlying conditions impact on the susceptibility to chronic asymptomatic parasitemia and antibody mediated immunity to malaria in adults. Many sub-Saharan African countries are facing an increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome due to lifestyle changes. At the same time infectious disease such as malaria remain highly endemic in these same areas. A recent study in Sweden detected a markedly increased risk of severe malaria in travellers with diabetes and obesity. Whether this is also found in endemic areas is yet to be confirmed. The purpose of this project is to establish a collaboration between institutions in Cameroon and Sweden, and to develop research projects to address the interplay between NCDs and malaria. We will perform a hospital-based study to assess disease severity and comorbidities. In addition, we will set up a cohort study to assess malaria parasite prevalence and immunity, as well as progress of diabetes. The proposed collaboration builds on highly complementary expertise that will enable generation of novel interdisciplinary findings of high public health importance. The collaboration includes workshops, seminars, research visits and planned PhD, and will be mutually beneficial for the research and development of both partners.

The Newton Fund is part of the... UK’s official development assistance. Its aim is to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and social welfare of partner countries.
The Newton Fund was launched in 2014 and originally consisted of £75 million each year for 5 years. In the 2015 UK Spending Review it was agreed to extend and expand the fund. The Newton Fund was extended from 2019 to 2021 and will expand to £150 million per year by 2021, resulting in a £735 million UK investment to 2021, with partner countries providing matched resources within the fund.
