Strengthening Regional Disease... Surveillance in West Africa/Renforcer la surveillance épidémiologique régionale en Afrique de l'Ouest
more
This project aims to strengthe...n the ability of West African countries to ensure regional disease surveillance and response. It supports the West Africa Regional Disease Surveillance Capacity Strengthening Project managed by the World Bank, and coordinated and implemented by the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO). Disease outbreaks within the West African region are frequent and can have a particularly heavy impact on the countries' economies and human development. As epidemics do not respect national boundaries, a high level of inter-country regional collaboration and information sharing is required to be effectively prepared for potential epidemics, such as Ebola, or to be able to prevent them from reoccurring. Project activities include: (1) establishing centres of disease surveillance at the local level that are able to detect and report on diseases, (2) undertaking regional simulation exercises for outbreak responses and (3) training women and men in epidemiological surveillance and control.

This project has been establis...hed under a regional perspective to contribute to the overall objective of enhancing health security in the Mediterranean basin by supporting capacity building for prevention and control of natural or man-made health threats posed by communicable diseases and other threats through a sustainable training programme in intervention epidemiology. The MediPIET project is aimed at setting up a regional competent workforce in intervention epidemiology to carry out essential public health functions for prevention and control of national and cross-border challenges posed by communicable diseases and other health threats enhancing the biological aspect of CBRN CoE Initiative. STRENGTHENING NATIONAL CAPACIT...Y FOR OUTBREAK AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA
more
Strengthening national capacit...y for outbreak and crisis management in Africa
more
Most African countries are una...ble to safely diagnose pathogens with epidemic potential and react adequately to outbreaks. The far-reaching absence of these capacities has contributed to the delayed response to the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa. In order to counteract this deficit, the aim of this program is to strengthen the corresponding structures in Africa so that tropical and other rare infectious diseases can be diagnosed on-site. Module BNI 1.1 Strengthening stationary diagnostic capacities for identification and characterization of emerging and tropical infections in partner countries. Module BNI 1.2 Mobile diagnostic units in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe for missions during crisis situations

IHR SUMMER SCHOOL
IHR Summer School
The International Health Regul...ations (IHR 2005) constitute a binding framework regarding the coordination and the management of events that could possibly pose a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. IHR follow an all-hazard-approach and explicitly defines core capacities which have to be in place at different levels and institutions of the health systems in order to be prepared for response. The IHR Summer School aims to improve IHR core capacities of interested partner countries by strengthening them at an institutional and societal level, especially regarding Public Health surveillance and alarm- as well as response mechanisms. The IHR summer school uses concrete examples from participating countries to explain notification and reporting procedures in surveillance, outbreak management and points of entry (PoE) – especially at ports and airports. Furthermore, one topic will be the new IHR monitoring and evaluation framework of World Health Organization (WHO).

IHR SUMMER SCHOOL
IHR Summer School
The International Health Regul...ations constitute a binding framework for the coordination and the management of events that could possibly pose a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. IHR follow an all-hazard-approach and explicitly defines core capacities which have to be in place at different levels and institutions of the health systems in order to be prepared for response in the event of an emerging health threat. The IHR Summer School aims to improve IHR core capacities of interested partner countries by strengthening them at an institutional and societal level, especially regarding Public Health surveillance and alarm- as well as response mechanisms. Concrete examples from participating countries are used to explain notification and reporting procedures in surveillance, outbreak management and points of entry (PoE) – especially at ports and airports. Furthermore, one topic will be the new IHR monitoring and evaluation framework of World Health Organization (WHO).

Global Emergency Trainings and... support for Preparedness and Response to Disease outbreaks (GET PrepaReD)
more
GET PrepaReD = Global Emergenc...y Trainings and support for Preparedness and Response to Disease outbreaks. GET PrepaReD supports preparedness and response to outbreaks of infectious diseases in partner countries. Depending on the specific needs and interests of partner countries the project can target any step of the crisis management circle. In the respective partner country, GET PrepaReD may support the improvement of surveillance systems for early detection of outbreaks, the development of preparedness plans, the applied training of field epidemiologists, the fast organization of emergency operation centres (EOC) for communication and coordination during health crisis, the deployment of international experts, retrospective evaluation of crisis management or design and realization of realistic exercises. All activities are implemented in concepts and strategies of the federal government (e.g. Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) and planned and implemented in close collaboration with national and international partners (e.g. European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), World Health Organization (WHO), European Commission (EC)).

IHR SUMMER SCHOOL (IHR = INTER...NATIONAL HEALTH REGULATIONS)

IHR Summer School (IHR = Inter...national Health Regulations)
more
International Health Regulatio...ns (IHR 2005) have been ratified by 194 state parties and constitute a binding framework regarding the coordination and the management of events that could possibly pose a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). IHR follow an all-hazard-approach and explicitly defines core capacities which have to be in place at different levels and institutions of the health systems in order to be prepared for response in the event of an emerging health threat. The IHR Summer School follows this approach. It aims to improve IHR core capacities of interested partner countries by strengthening them at an institutional and societal level, especially regarding Public Health surveillance and alarm- as well as response mechanisms. The IHR summer school uses concrete examples from participating countries to explain notification and reporting procedures in surveillance, outbreak management and points of entry (PoE) - especially at ports and airports.
