The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program was launched by the Australian Government in May 2011. It was aimed at bringing together four separate and unaligned volunteer programs under a single Australian Government banner with unified program goal and objectives. The goal of the program is to contribute to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction and advance Australia's reputation and relationships in partner countries. AVID programme makes a considerable contribution to the achievement of the Government's public diplomacy objectives. Volunteers promote a positive perception of Australia in the region, and promote a positive perception of the aid program domestically. AVID also contributes to development outcomes and links the Australian community with people and organisations in developing countries. The AVID programme seeks to: build understanding of Australia's international role and commitment to integration with the Indo-Pacific region; increase the number of volunteers working to improve the economic livelihoods of people in developing countries; and develop volunteer assignments in priority areas of governance, health, social infrastructure and services and education. Funding under this initiative assists Scope Global's ongoing costs for implementation of the AVID program including volunteer allowance, recruitment, travel, insurance, management and other associated administrative costs. The total value of this investment is $147.8 million over 7 years, starting 2011-12.

WORLD BANK PACIFIC FACILITY 4
World Bank Pacific Facility 4
The World Bank Pacific Facilit...y IV (PF4) multi-donor trust fund aims to assist in shaping and accelerating economic growth and poverty reduction in the Pacific region by increasing access to the World Bank's (the Bank) resources and expertise. PF4 objectives aim to support the drivers of growth including, infrastructure development, telecommunications, private sector, aviation safety, community services, electricity, fisheries management, access to finance, participation by women, health and education. The PF4 is designed to support implementation of flexible earmarked projects aligned with Australian Government policy. With the recent addition of Nauru, the Bank has 12 Pacific island member countries (FSM, Fiji, Kiribati, Palau, PNG, RMI, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu), the majority of which are extremely remote, have limited capacity to manage major projects and are highly vulnerable to shocks, particularly natural disasters. Using a single trust fund to resource a range of activities and expertise across all of these countries reduces transaction costs for the Bank, Australia and Pacific island governments. Further, the Bank's convening power and strong trust fund systems allow it to manage large-scale projects in remote and challenging environments. The total value of this investment is $30.4 million over 5 years, starting 2013-14.

It is expected that, by 2020, IndoBeef will increase net household income for more than 70,000 farmers in Eastern Indonesia by 30 per cent. The main focus of IndoBeef activities will be in Southern Sumatra, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The program is managed by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in partnership with the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development. ACIAR is currently developing two initial projects focusing on smallholder farmers in Sumatera and East Kalimantan managed by University of New England. The initial focus of the revised program includes research on cattle in oil palm systems and in rain-fed cropping systems. The total value of this investment is $13.0 million over 9 years, starting 2012-13.

Australian Volunteers for Inte...rnational Development: Global Scope
more
The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program was launched by the Australian Government in May 2011.

Australia's bilateral aid prog...ram to the Federated States of Micronesia will focus on the following three strategic objectives improving the educational system, primarily by co-financing with the Asian Development Bank the development and implementation of a project that will a) build capacities for improved assessments of student learning; b) strengthen teacher preparation and development; c) provide more high quality teaching and learning resources for numeracy and literacy; and, d) build greater community engagement in and support of education. The program will also support greater gender equity and the rights of women and girls through improving the legislative and regulatory framework that protects women and girls from violence, increase women's economic empowerment by developing more opportunities for existing women's businesses and the development of new women's businesses, and improving the availability and quality of support services to women and girls who have experienced gender violence. Funding also supports building resilience to natural hazards through completion of the Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Education project that has worked with 34 communities in FSM to help schools and communities develop adaptation and preparedness strategies, empower them to independently respond to natural disasters, and contribute to the implementation of national adaptation and disaster risk reduction efforts. The bilateral program also will help consolidate and build upon existing bilateral, regional and global climate support initiatives, including building climate change into all development projects and prioritising the Embassy's Development Assistance Program small grants to support community projects that focus on climate adaptation, resilience, and disaster preparedness. The total value of this investment is $3.6 million over 10 years, starting 2010-11.

Australian Assistance to Agric...ulture Development in Baluchistan Border Areas Phase II
more
The Australian Assistance to A...griculture Development in Baluchistan Border Areas Phase II (AusABBA Phase II) will build off the achievements of AusABBA Phase I, by deepening systemic support for agriculture and market development in the districts of Chagahai, Kech, Kharan, Nushki, Panjgur and Washuk with clear objectives around nutrition and gender outcomes. AusABBA II will further strengthen the more mature and market oriented Farmers Marketing Collectivess and Mutual Marketing Organisations to become sustainable small agribusinesses. Simultaneously, through its integrated approach, AusABBA II will address important issues that hamper development in Balochistan such as: nutrition and food security; insufficient jobs and income generating opportunities; household resilience and livelihoods; as well as reducing gender inequalities. The primary target group of AusABBA II are the resource-poor and agriculture-dependent households engaged in crop and livestock production in the program area. Program support is also directed to larger producers and entrepreneurs, who do not qualify as poor, yet play an integral role in the development of a agricultural value chains and whose development could indirectly benefit smaller agricultural producers. The total value of this investment is $23.5 million over 7 years, starting 2016-17.

AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS FOR INTE...RNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: GLOBAL SCOPE

Australian Volunteers for Inte...rnational Development: Global Scope
more
The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program was launched by the Australian Government in May 2011.
