CAPACITY STRENGTHENING AND ENH...ANCED TOOLS FOR EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTH RESEARCH AND CONTROL/ ELIMINATION STRATEGIES OF PARASITIC DISEASES IN VIETNAM
more
|
Capacity strengthening and enh...anced tools for evidence-based health research and control/ elimination strategies of parasitic diseases in Vietnam
more
|
Background: To strengthen the ...control and/or elimination strategies for parasitic diseases in Vietnam, which are a major contributor to mortality and morbidity, the research capacity in Vietnam will be strengthened and laboratory tools for detection and surveillance of parasitic diseases will be enhanced. The research capacity of the National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE) will be strengthened by improving the research infrastructure, in particular of quality assurance and library systems, as well as train Vietnamese scientist in multi-disciplinary approaches to support the malaria control and elimination program. An increase in health research capacity is required in order to expand the limited knowledge of the factors contributing to the epidemiology of these diseases in Vietnam. Diagnostic and surveillance tools will be developed and transferred to the laboratories of NIMPE for the detection of Food and Waterborne Parasitic Diseases (FWBPD) and malaria. In addition, a national program for control of cysticercosis, a disease caused by the cysts of the pork tapeworm, will be developed and validated within this program. The improved detection and surveillance of parasitic diseases will aid in the development of strategies leading to improved health of people in Vietnam, especially the most vulnerable groups.

|
|

MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF ZOONO...TIC EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
more
|
Meeting the Challenge of Zoono...tic Emerging Infectious Diseases in Southeast Asia
more
|
The health of people, wildlife... and domestic animals are inextricably linked. Of the 1 500 known pathogens, researchers estimate that 60% are capable of infecting both animals and humans (zoonotic), and of the 156 pathogens that are considered emerging, 73% have reached the human population through animals. Zoonotic emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) threaten the economic, social and political stability of populations, particularly in the developing world, where they are responsible for approximately 30% of all deaths. Southeast Asia is a major hotspot due to rapid economic growth and associated changes in agricultural practices, ecosystems and social systems that are conducive to the emergence and spread of new diseases. Over one third of the world s EIDs have emerged there, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) or bird flu, and the Nipah virus. This grant will allow the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in collaboration with research teams from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, to address knowledge and management gaps in the control of EIDs in Southeast Asia.

New infectious diseases, mostl...y of animal origin, are emerging more rapidly than ever. Southeast Asia is the current hotspot of disease emergence due to high population and animal densities, on the one hand, and relatively limited (human and animal) healthcare delivery capacity, on the other. This project aims to understand the relationship between emerging infectious diseases of potentially pandemic proportions, and the agricultural, land utilization and ecosystem management practices that give rise to them. The project will begin with a competition in Southeast Asia for funding multi-country studies coordinated by an institution or consortium of institutions located in the region. The emphasis will be on capacity building, networking and policy impact at the regional level. Lessons learned from the Southeast Asian experience will inform similar activities in other regions such as South Asia, West Africa and Egypt.

This contribution represents C...anada's long-term institutional support to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), a non-profit international health research, service, and training institution. icddr,b uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. icddr,b's mandate is to provide free, high quality health care for the poor in Bangladesh, including maternal and child health services and treatment for diarrhoeal and other diseases. It also supports research that is designed to generate the data needed to develop policies and practices to address significant health challenges in Bangladesh and other countries. Canada's support to icddr,b contributes to ensuring that icddr,b is providing effective, evidence-based, gender-responsive health care and health education services for the poor. It also ensures that the icddr,b can continue to conduct important health research that translates into policies that can help to improve the health and reduce poverty levels of Bangladeshis. Canada's institutional support is also helping to strengthen the management systems and improve the sustainability of the Centre.

Prediction and Prevention of E...merging Zoonotic Diseases in Wildlife

The emerging and re-emerging z...oonotic diseases affecting Brazil today result from complex interactions between natural and human systems. Zoonotic diseases such as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, rabies and leishmaniasis for example emerged as humans encroached on forested regions, bringing people into direct contact with wildlife reservoirs. A better understanding of the type and rate of contact between human, animal and wildlife populations is critical to understanding how zoonotic infections emerge and spread. This grant will allow a research team from the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and the New York-based Ecohealth Alliance to undertake active surveillance of wild and domestic animal populations in the Atlantic Forest (Pontal do Paranapanema, Mata Atlantica) to detect pathogens that cause zoonotic diseases. At the same time, the team will monitor human behaviour that brings people into direct or indirect contact with wildlife populations, and track suspected zoonoses in the human population. Then, the researchers will work with local communities and the municipal government on strategies for disease prevention and control. The research activities will be replicated by the Federal University of Amazonia in the Amazon region (Monte Negro, State of Rondonia), an area presenting different economic and social dynamics.

STRENGTHENING REGIONAL CAPACIT...Y FOR EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASE RESEARCH AND RESPONSE THROUGH PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Strengthening Regional Capacit...y for Emerging Infectious Disease Research and Response through Partnership Development
more
|
Established in 2006 with IDRC ...s facilitation and financial support, the Asian Partnership on Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) has become an important site of research and programming on eco-health and emerging infectious diseases (EID) in Southeast Asia. Its studies on aspects of Avian Influenza, which involved over 30 institutions in five countries, resulted in a considerable body of publications, reports, policy briefs, and some degree of influence on policy and practice. It has fostered strong linkages among researchers in different countries, leading in some cases to ongoing team collaboration. APEIR s Steering Committee (SC), consisting of senior government officials, research managers and researchers, has developed a strong dynamic and won international recognition by other development organizations. However, APEIR has also faced considerable challenges in disseminating its research, securing outside funding, sustaining SC member involvement, maintaining effective operation of its Coordinating Office. The accession of Dr. Pongpisut Jongudomsuk (Executive Director of the Health Systems Research Institute in Thailand) to the SC Chair in 2011 has breathed new life into APEIR. This project will enable him to pursue new ideas about research and the role of APEIR in the region. It will support him in developing two research ideas-on antimicrobial resistance and the other on wildlife and EIDs-to the point of producing full proposals that can be submitted for funding. It will also support developmental work that will enable APEIR to assume an outreach and convening role among EID networks in Southeast Asia. Finally, the project will enable the Coordinating Office to hire a new full-time coordinator, who will be able to offer better support for APEIR s expanded activities.

Avian Influenza in Egypt: Mobi...lity Grant for Canada-Egypt Collaboration
more
|
Outside of Asia, Egypt is home... to the greatest prevalence of avian influenza in the world. This research project will serve to strengthen Egypt s capacity to conduct avian influenza surveillance and control.Avian influenza in EgyptEgypt first responded to avian influenza through widespread culling. The consequences were catastrophic for backyard poultry and the livelihoods of poor households. Avian influenza is now interacting with bronchitis and other respiratory ailments, creating a shifting burden of disease that threatens the most accessible form of protein for many poor Egyptians. Improving surveillance and controlCairo University, the national government, and the poultry industry are working to enhance surveillance and control of these diseases through vocational training, mapping disease prevalence, and efforts to produce local vaccines. This project will allow the team to work with Canada s Poultry Health Research Network. The network is seen as a model for multidisciplinary approach and collaboration with industry. The grant will enable mutual visits between Cairo University and the Ontario Veterinary College.

This initiative aims to reduce... the number of deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by reducing sanitation risks in the most vulnerable zones of Artibonite. The initiative will also aim to improve access to potable water, to sanitation, and will make concerted efforts to sensitize families of the most vulnerable women and children to the benefits of improved hygiene practices. This UNICEF initiative will focus on the provinces of Artibonite and Centre, where cholera remains an ever-present threat and where diarrheal diseases remain the most common cause of mortality among children under 5 years of age. UNICEF will work closely with the Government of Haiti and with other important stakeholders who work in water sanitation, and hygiene, both at the national and regional level to maximise coordination and impact of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions. The project aims to improve access to 240,000 people, including women and children, to drinking water in communities across the provinces of Artibonite and Centre. The project will work to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in 140 schools, as well as establish well-managed and sustainable WASH systems in 30 clinics and hospitals.

March 2014 - Haiti has made si...gnificant progress in recovering from the devastating earthquake of January 2010. Ninety percent of the population displaced by the earthquake has left the camps and the incidence of cholera has been reduced by 50% since the outbreak in 2010. The number of people facing severe food insecurity (who don't have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food) has been brought down from 1.5 million to 600,000. However, an estimated 3 million of Haiti's 10 million people remain in critical need and are still extremely vulnerable. Of these, an estimated 817,000 people (8.3% of the overall population) are expected to require humanitarian assistance in the coming year. The priority needs include food, water, sanitation, hygiene, cholera prevention, protection (of children, especially young girls, and women), and finding durable housing solutions for the remaining displaced people. With DFATD support, Oxfam-Québec works in collaboration with Médecins du Monde to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, as well as to improve access to primary health care and cholera prevention and treatment for at least 15,000 internally displaced people in Cité Soleil. Project activities include: (1) establishment and operation of 15 water kiosks to sell clean drinking water; (2) rehabilitation of the main water supply network of Cité Soleil; (3) rehabilitation or building of 60 latrines, 60 hand washing stations and 60 bathing facilities; (4) establishment of a solid and domestic waste disposal system; (5) hygiene education for at least 15,000 people; (6) distribution of 3,500 hygiene kits; and (7) implementation of a cholera prevention community alert system in Cité Soleil to report suspected cases to health authorities in a timely and efficient way.

This project aims to reduce th...e number of children under the age of five who are dying from diarrhea in five Nigerian states. This project works closely with communities, the Government of Nigeria, and the private sector to build a sustainable, local market for oral rehydration salts and zinc - the recommended treatment for diarrhea. Combined, these two simple, highly effective, and affordable treatments can reduce the likelihood of diarrhea deaths in young children by up to 93%. The project works to encourage investment by Nigerian pharmaceutical importers and manufacturers to ensure a better supply of these low-cost treatments in Nigeria, and better distribution of the treatments in clinics and private shops in hard-to-reach areas. This innovative, private-sector oriented project, also seeks to educate caregivers and health workers in the use of oral rehydration salts and zinc to effectively and safely treat diarrhea in children. The project aims to increase the use of these life-saving treatments - from less than 1% currently to over 50% by 2017 - to reach an estimated 4.2 million children.
