|
The prevalence rate of people ...with disabilities (PWDs) in the target area is 8% . Average in Kenya is 4.6% (2009 statistics). The PWDs are commonly marginalized and live in poverty. The purpose of the initiative is to change the attitudes in the communities towards the PWDs and to improve their social status and quality of life. The project concentrates on the following components of the CBR matrix: 1. Education 2. Social 3. Empowerment. The initiative is linked to the on-going projects in the area. Improving Livelihood for the Youth and PWDs (FORMIN funded) and a health initiative for PWDs. (ADRA Finland funded). The intended impact of the project is to improve the way PWDs special needs are taken into account in the communities and also to be perceived as normal members who can add value to the community. The central theme in the project is to change attitudes towards PWDs and to empower them so that they are well equipped to meet the everyday challenges. The initiative supports the cross-cutting development policy objectives. Especially the human rights democracy and the development of responsible civil society. The initiative aims especially to prevent social exclusion and enhance education and social participation. The project will also improve this vulnerable groups livelihood opportunities. The project will not create new structures but to strengthen the existing ones. Local schools governments churches and the local Muslim community have a central role. Involvement of these actors is the core condition for the success and they will be included as project partners. Sustainability of the project is built upon these actors. Primary beneficiaries of the project are the PWD families and secondary beneficiaries are the schools pupils and teachers as well as local communities churches and the Muslim Community. Secondary beneficiaries will benefit from new skills new ways of working and through the development strategies. The project aims to create collaboration between the schools government agencies churches and communities. In addition by educational process increase the awareness of the schools and the community to understand the situation of disabled persons. Help schools local authorities and communities to create a more suitable environment for people with disabilities. Eg access to offices churches schools with a wheelchair. Encourage and help PWDs to organise themselves in associations and groups of interest.

F.a: Viethealth: Prevention of... Early Childhood Disabilities
more
|
WHAT: Viethealth aims to incre...ase the capacity of the local health sector in prevention and identification of disabilities, and rehabilitation of disable children by training village, community and district health workers. Viethealth also raises awareness in communities about disabilities and especially disable people's rights e.g by producing and distributing informational materials to the communities. WHY: Around 5 million Vietnamese are disable, of which 1,5 million are children. In the Provinces of Phu Tho and Bac Giang the level of awareness about mother and child health is low both amongst the health workers and residents of the project communities. Malign practices during the pregnancy are common, causing disability amongst the children. The disabled children and their families also experience discrimination in their communities. The project aims to prevent childhood disabilities, provide services for children with disabilities and their families, and decrease the stigma on disable children and their families in the provinces of Phu Tho and Bac Giang. RESULTS: increased capacity of local health workers, teachers and parents in disability identification, rehabilitation and rights of persons with disability. Children with disability have access to services. BENEFICIARIES: Disable children and their families, education and health workers, pregnant women PARTNER ORGANISATION: Viethealth

In Thailand people with disabi...lities are marginalized and often hidden. Therefore they have difficulties to get healthcare, education and a workplace. Something they would have the right to. The goal is to improve the disabled persons' situation, through education, vocational studies and therapy so that they in the future would need less help. CDPD's work has become a role model for others in the same field. During this project period the cooperation with the authorities will be in focus, in order for them to overtake the activities when the project period is over. The local partner for this project is Thailand Karen Babtist Convention (KBC).

OVERCOMING DISCRIMINATION AGAI...NST AND FACILITATING SOCIAL INCLUSION OF ALCOHOL-DEPENDENT WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN
more
|
Overcoming discrimination agai...nst and facilitating social inclusion of alcohol-dependent women and their children
more
|
It is difficult to imagine a m...ore discriminated group of women in Belarus than those suffering from alcoholism. In the eyes of common public they have a stigma of being unable to control the life of themselves and their children. Women feel embarrassed and try hard to hide their addiction even from the closest people. A stereotype exists that alcoholism is more shameful for women than for men. Children of alcohol dependent women are easily taken into social shelter wherefrom the mother has to get them away only after payments to the state. This leads to negative circle: inability to pay and get back the children leads to heavier alcohol use. Children of alcohol-dependent mothers bear the stigma of their parents. WHO ranks Belarus to be 1st in the world of alcohol use. The main object of the project is to empower alcohol-dependent women and their children (especially girls) by providing them economic and social support. An innovative model of support for women suffering from alcohol dependency in Smolevichi and Minsk districts will include: selection and training of 10 women suffering from alcohol dependency and having underage children training them to cast and handle decorate and pack plaster products in the social enterprise Our Craftsmen (which was established in 2016 on the support of Finnish FLC); giving them effective support system (co-ordinated with local AA groups) and organizing a seminar on professional handicraft activities which could help them with further employment. 5 women will be employed by Our craftsmen during the project the other 5 will have a possibility to volunteer in the workshop. At the same time a special support group for at least 12 girls whose mothers participate in the project. The topics will include: the ability to make informed choices resolve conflicts develop personal skills etc. A series of joint workshops for children and alcohol-dependent parents will be organized also a seminar for other family members (15) where they will receive support recognize and apply effective methods of preventing codependence. It is expected that during the project cooperation mechanism between NGOs local authorities specialists of the child protection system will be improved to jointly solve the problems of fighting alcoholism in Smolevichi and Minsk. At least 10 000 citixens will learn about the project and about the new model through public events media coverage and social networks.

INT/UN PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE ...THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES UNPRPD

INT/UN Partnership to Promote ...the Rights of Persons With Disabilities UNPRPD
more
|
It is estimated that more than... a billion people - about 15 % of the world's population - live with some form of disability. They experience higher rates of poverty less legal protection lower educational achievements poorer health outcomes and less policitical and cultural participation among others particularly in lower income countries. The UNPRPD Partnership brings together the UN system (UNDP UNICEF ILO WHO UNDESA OHCHR UNFPA UNESCO UN Women) governments Disabled Persons Organizations and the broader civil society to advance disability rights around the world. It operates through a Multi-Partner Trust Fund managed by the UNDP. The UNPRPD aims at developing the capacities of national stakeholders particularly governments and organizations of persons with disabilities for the effective implementation of the CRPD (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) including through promoting disability-inclusive internationally agreed development goals. This will happen by mainstreaming the disability rights within the UN system and by financing local or global projects and involve targeted as well as mainstreamed approaches (350.000 ? each). The involvement of government civil society and UN Country Teams ensure the quality relevance and sustainability of the projects. Round 1 projects are showing promising results by promoting the rights of persons with mental and intellectual disabilities by the establishment of Ombudsman for Psychiatry and promotion of de-institutionalization in Moldova. In Togo inclusive education has increased the enrollment rates of disabled children by 132 %. A National Charter for the Rights or Persons with Disabilities was developed and it generated formal commitments in Tunisia. Also a network of Inclusive Cities with official public commitment to their budgets was created in Indonesia. Legal assistance is provided for more than 1000 disabled persons in Vietnam and 60 DPO's have received training on the rights of disabled persons and policy advocacy techniques. In Costa Rica job opportunities and self-employment activities were created. Finland is the biggest donor government followed by Australia and she is also member of the UNPRPD Policy Board and Management Committee. Finland has channelled 7.560.000 million euros to the partnership (2012-2016) and will channel 15 million ? in 2017. OHCHR; Support to the UN Speci...al Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities
more
|
Rights of persons with disabil...ities are a priority area within the Finnish human rights and development policies. Finland supports the work of the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities. Her duties include the enhancement and advocacy work related to disability issues particularly concerning persons with disabilities that live in the developing countries. With the help of the project disability issues are also strengthened in the implementation process of the sustainable development goals (Agenda 2030). An important goal of the project is also to increase the participation of persons with disabilities into national and international processes that concern their rights. The Special Rapporteur has played an important role in the advancement of the rights of persons with disabilities particularly in developing countries. Finland's support has been appreciated by the disability rights actors globally. The amount of support is proposed to be 100 000 EUR in 2018.

EMPOWERING THE DEAF COMMUNITY ...IN TANZANIA FOR FULL ENGAGEMENT IN PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROCESSES

Empowering the Deaf Community ...in Tanzania for full engagement in Public Accountability and Local Government processes
more
|
Tanzania Association of the De...af (CHAVITA) intends to improve the organizational capacity of CHAVITA and TASLI to engage their members in public accountability and Local government matters in Dodoma Tanga and Mtwara municipalities by the end of year 2019. to improve knowledge and skills of CHAVITA and TASLI members on strategies and processes to engage themselves in public accountability and Local government processes, to empower the local government structures in Dodoma Tanga and Mtwara municipalities with Disability awareness and knowledge to better include deaf people in their development plans. Main activities will include conducting baseline survey in the mentioned municipalities on needs beneficial engagement and challenges facing the deaf people in local government processes that hinder their effective participation in public accountability. Sensitization and training workshop as well as advocacy interventions will take place. All these will be done because in Tanzania the public attitudes toward the Disabled are fairly negative.. Deaf people are in general marginalized from the society, their special needs and concern have not been addressed in the planning at any level of the society. Also the language barriers prevent them from a total inclusion in the society as interpreter services are not generally available. The expected development impact is enhanced visibility and inclusion of Deaf people in local government matters and public development as well as enhanced capacity of CHAVITA TASLI and their members to promote deaf rights needs and concern in public accountability. Through the actions the development results expected are CHAVITA TASLI and their members have increased knowledge and understanding on public accountability and local government processes.Main beneficiaries of this project include deaf people in Dodoma Mtwara and Tanga as well as CHAVITA TASLI and their members. Government officials from Dodoma Tanga and Mtwara Municipalities. The project is implemented by CHAVITA in cooperation with TASLI. The Embassy invited new applications in mid of this year 2017. Many organizations sent the applications but CHAVITA was among the few who were selected to be funded because the proposal was focused and targeted the disabled. |
As part of the project the Cam...bodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO) provides basic healthcare sevrices to human rights defenders and vulnerable Cambodians in Phnom Penh and 13 provinces. The medical team of LICADHO provides eg. medical check ups and other services to victims of human rights abuse human rights defenders and prison inmates and sends medical missions to events with an increased risks for vulnerable people e.g. land dispute related demonstrations protests and community events. As part of the project LICADHO also conducts documentation of medical statistics related to health services to such vulnerable groups. As a result of the project victims of human rights abuses and prison inmates and guards will have improved access to basic health services and treatment and human rights defenders will have access to preventive care. In addition it will result in increased knowledge about violent human rights abuses. In Cambodia the situation of human rights defenders and activists is difficult and human rights abuses occur. The availability of health care services is inequal the health sector is underresources and the prisons exceed their capacity. This project will furhter the access of the most vulnerable people to health services. It will also promote the development of the civil society in Cambodia.
