ECOHEALTH CHAIR ON URBAN AIR P...OLLUTION AND NON-COMMUNICABLE RESPIRATORY DISEASES (WEST AFRICA)
more
|
Ecohealth Chair on Urban Air P...ollution and Non-Communicable Respiratory Diseases (West Africa)
more
|
Urban air pollution, indoors a...nd outdoors, is a major worldwide health and environmental problem, particularly in Africa, where it is associated with economic activity, transportation, and the use of biomass for cooking. This problem is exacerbated by the rapid and uncontrolled growth of African cities. Worldwide, it causes more than 36 million deaths annually due to non-communicable diseases, including cardiorespiratory diseases, asthma, and bronco-pulmonary cancer. In West Africa in particular, air pollution is not given sufficient consideration in the development of policies to prevent these diseases. Significant knowledge gaps exist on the health effects of air pollution and its impact on lifestyle and climate change. To improve policies and practices, IDRC has been seeking to develop ecohealth research capacity in Africa and elsewhere in the world, focusing on various health and development issues. These efforts have led to the establishment of a community of practice in the region, the Communauté de pratique en écosanté de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre (COPES-AOC), and the institutionalization of ecosystem approaches to health in various higher education and research institutions. The latter has recently resulted in the creation of an inter-university doctoral program (Programme de doctorat interuniversitaire, PDI) in public health integrating health and environment, which has been adopted by five universities in the West African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal. This ecohealth chair project builds on these achievements to promote the development of ecohealth through high-quality research focusing on urban air pollution and its impact on health within the context of climate change, while training a new generation of researchers and leaders through the PDI. The project will strengthen the existing institutional partnership in the region and foster an emerging international partnership, to provide the required ecohealth expertise and mobilize the necessary resources to ensure the sustainability of impacts and of the PDI.

TASK SHIFTING FOR EXPANDING AC...CESS TO QUALITY EYE CARE SERVICES IN ETHIOPIA
more
|
Task Shifting for Expanding Ac...cess to Quality Eye Care Services in Ethiopia
more
|
Quality eye care services are ...essential to the health and quality of life of Ethiopians. An estimated one million people in Ethiopia suffer from trichiasis, where eyelashes grow backward toward the eye. Trichiasis can result in damaged corneas and blindness yet the number of surgeries carried out annually during the last five years is less than 50,000. Many Ethiopians also live with cataracts, the country s leading cause of blindness and visual impairment. Approximately 500,000 Ethiopians have severe visual impairment or blindness from cataracts. This research project will help inform and influence eye care policies in Ethiopia with the goal of expanding access to quality care. More specifically, the research team will:- conduct research on cataract surgeons in Ethiopia to supplement existing data;- compile existing evidence on cataract surgeons for a policy brief;- compile existing evidence on trichiasis surgeons in Ethiopia for a policy brief;- hold a meeting of stakeholders in Ethiopia to bring together Ministry of Health policymakers, trainers, eye care program staff, and others to discuss how existing evidence can inform cataract and trichiasis surgery policies, programs, and practices; and,- prepare a report in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health. The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) will lead the project and work with Ethiopian research colleagues. This work will advance KCCO s earlier efforts under the Africa Health Systems Initiative - Support to African Research Partnerships. The organization addressed three main eye care issues: - non-physician cataract surgeons are conducting cataract surgery;- general nurses are conducting trichiasis surgery; and, - general health workers (at frontline health facilities) are providing primary eye care. The findings from this earlier work were compiled and discussed at a stakeholder meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2012. The Nairobi meeting also included colleagues from Ethiopia. They reviewed two areas where tasks are shifting in Ethiopia: trichiasis surgery and cataract surgery. While some evidence on the issue exists, the results from the various research activities in Ethiopia must be compiled. Researchers need to work with the government and its NGO partners to develop a clear strategy to guide trichiasis surgeons. Since 2007, four Ethiopian training centres have offered training to non-physician cataract surgeons. In 2012, funding for the program ceased. While researchers have investigated productivity, their work has been limited. Further research is needed. Stakeholders must also review the evidence to decide whether the training program should continue as is, follow a different model, or be abandoned.

Improving Access to Services f...or People with Disabilities - Humanitarian Response 2014 / Améliorer l'accès aux services pour les personnes handicapées
more
|
This project aims to improve t...he resilience of Palestinian women, men and children by providing essential health and rehabilitation services to approximately 2,905 people with disabilities and their families. The project helps to improve access to educational services for children with disabilities, with a particular focus on children who have cerebral palsy and several disabilities. The project also provides home-based rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities in the West Bank. The project expects to create two mobile teams made up of physiotherapists, doctors, occupational therapists and social workers. The mobile teams are expected to provide services to people with disabilities and their family members in their own homes and communities. This project is one of over 150 projects that make up the United Nations' 2014 Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC) for the West Bank and Gaza. The 2014 HPC, worth over US $400 million, allows the international community to help spare Palestinians from the worst effects of the ongoing crisis. Delivered through a coordinated approach, the HPC provides life-saving humanitarian assistance by providing food, water, health, and nutrition and by increasing the protection of civilians.

ENHANCE: Enhancing Brain Plast...icity for Sensorimotor Recovery in Spastic Hemiparesis
more
|
Often, people who have had a s...troke experience problems recovering the use of their arms, and the issue may persist for a long time. This research will test new ways to boost recovery using non-painful brain stimulation and personalized programs that train patients to use arm movements. Personalized training programsThe training programs will use the latest technology in rehabilitation, including virtual reality and robotics. The research team will apply the same training programs in three different countries: Canada, Israel, and India. In this way, the research team will combine their knowledge and skills to create training programs that can be applied anywhere in the world.Project objectivesMore specifically, the project aims to:-test the training programs' effectiveness at enhancing upper limb motor function in patients with subacute stroke-determine the effects of repetitive brain stimulation aimed at inhibiting excessive or exciting diminished cortical activity on the control of spatial thresholds to decrease spasticity and improve the arm's motor function -design personalized rehabilitation programs in high and low- to middle-income settings-further develop the graduate training environment and international research collaboration among the partnersProject leadershipThe project lead is Mindy F. Levin at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Her collaborators include Dario G. Liebermann at Tel Aviv University, Israel, and John Solomon Manikandan and Natarajan Vasanthan Rajagopalan at Manipal University, India.Project fundingThis project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Azrieli Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Support to the Mine Action Pro...gram in Afghanistan/Soutien au programme antimines pour l'Afghanistan
more
|
This project aims to support t...he Government of Afghanistan in its efforts to eliminate all known landmines and other explosive remnants of war from Afghanistan by 2023, in line with its commitments under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty. The project also enhances cooperation among different players involved in mine action and helps to build national capacity to take responsibility for mine action. Canada's support not only saves lives, it helps to free up valuable land for agriculture, facilitates the resettlement of refugees and internally displaced people, and provides safe access to markets, water sources, schools, clinics and safe play areas for children.

Support to the fifth Latin Ame...rican and Caribbean Tobacco or Health Conference
more
|
This project supported the fif...th Latin American and Caribbean Tobacco or Health Conference (LACTOH), held in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was organized by the InterAmerican Heart Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Uruguay, the Commission for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases, and the Commission against Cancer. This biannual conference convenes major players in tobacco control (government, civil society, and academia) and is instrumental in strengthening the coordination of efforts and advancing tobacco control policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year's program focuses on priorities for the region, including tobacco economics, fiscal policies, illicit trade, new products, and new marketing strategies. Alongside other sponsors, IDRC's support will help bring experts to the conference from low- and middle-income countries who have significant potential to contribute to national tobacco control efforts but who would not have been able to participate without IDRC support. Researchers funded by IDRC will play an active role, especially those working on research to support tax policy, and will contribute to the use of research for policy and practice.

ASSESSING USUAL HOUSEHOLD SALT... INTAKE THROUGH SALT DISAPPEARANCE IN RURAL CAMBODIA FOR THE FUTURE FORTIFICATION WITH THIAMINE
more
|
Assessing usual household salt... intake through salt disappearance in rural Cambodia for the future fortification with thiamine
more
|
Infantile beriberi is a potent...ially fatal disease that can result from a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1) in the maternal diet, and remains a persistent public health issue in Cambodia. The Cambodian diet consists mainly of thiamine-poor white rice, and is lacking is thiamine-rich foods such as pork, whole grains or legumes. Previous studies have shown that thiamine fortified fish sauce is an effective means of increasing thiamine status, however commercially produced fish sauce may not reach the poorest communities who make their own fish sauce, and fish sauce is not commonly consumed globally. In contrast, salt is a common ingredient in most parts of the world and has been successfully used as a global fortification vehicle for iodine. It is estimated that Cambodians consume approximately 15g of salt per day. However, this may not be representative of pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, and there have been recent efforts to actively promote reduced salt intake. Therefore new salt intake measures are required. The proposed research is a 22-week observational study to measure usual salt intake among households of new mothers in rural Cambodia to assess the potential of salt as a fortification vehicle for thiamine. Since Cambodians eat from a common pot, participants and their entire household will consume only study-supplied household salt for the duration of the study and fortnightly weigh-ins will determine salt disappearance among 320 households in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia. Results from this study may inform the future formulation of a thiamine-fortified salt that could be scaled up in Cambodia and other similarly at-risk countries to increase maternal thiamine intake, and prevent infantile beriberi and related mortality.

|
|
