The regional manager visits ta...rget countries 1-2 times a year. A training and recreational event is organised on a yearly basis for Finnish staff. Partners' networking is supported by, for example training material exchanges and organising partnership seminars. The project has a project assistant, who, in addition to assistant's work, especially attends to peace-building issues in the target region. Regional coordination is a part of Fida's strategy to decentralise administration. Project staff need guidance and support in their work, especially in building local partnerships. Partners' working capacity is limited and they do not have strong networks. Direct beneficiaries in the project are the key actors of the partners, which are about 15 people. The project aims at enabling the partners to do social work in cooperation with other actors, which holistically benefits the target communities. The purpose of the project is to support Fida's Finnish staff and the partners' mutual networking in the region's different countries. As a result of the project, staff's management is improved. Project planning, tracking and assessment become more effective. Partners' working capacity increases. The starting of action (Afghanistan) and the concluding of it (Jordan, Palestinian territories) occur smoothly. The region's humanitarian situation is assessed and the partners are equipped for action. The understanding of peace building increases.

F.a: Regional Coordination
|
The project helps in the plann...ing and implementation of psychosocial elements in other projects in the region. Regarding implementation, it is usually a matter of finding and producing appropriate training materials and providing trainings for the local partners. In 2016 the project focuses on day care staff's training in Kurdistan and cooperation with psychosocial support counsellor of the Eastern Africa region, as well as the concluding of the project. The region's communities live in unstable conditions (war, refugees, political conflicts and weak status of women), which weaken psychic health and affect negatively on parenthood. The project goal is the improved atmosphere in the communities. The purpose is the community members' targeted means of survival and life skills in personal life, marriage and parenthood. The beneficiaries are children, women and people with disabilities due to mental health issues. The project improves awareness of how to act in potentially emotionally traumatising situations and raises teachers' and parents' skills to provide sexual education. The educational staff's ability to guide students in life management, to work with children with special needs, and the counselling skills of community workers are improved. In addition, the project produces a training package for disability caused by mental health reasons.

The planned project is a conti...nuation for the ongoing project ?Integrating Mental Health in Primary Health Care in a Post-conflict Setting 2012-2014? which took place in Dang district in Nepal. In the second phase of the project the aim is to improve equal access to effective treatment of mental health problems. The project will be expanded to cover the whole district (548.000 inhabitants). After this continuation phase responsibility of the project will be handed over to local authorities. The prevalence of mental health problems is high but no mental health professionals work in the public healthcare system in the whole district. The aim is to develop the activities implemented in the first phase of the project in a way that enables the actors of the local health system to continue them independently. All government health facilities including primary care units and hospitals will be covered. The immediate objectives are to improve the capacity of the primary health care workers to detect and treat common mental disorders to improve access to specialised psychiatric services at district level and to raise the level of awareness of mental health and to reduce negative attitudes of the general population. Training sessions will be organised for female health care volunteers primary health care workers and hospital-based medical officers. Four psychosocial counsellors hired by the project will provide counselling services as well as supervise trained primary health care workers in providing support to people who suffer from common mental disorders. The effectiveness of counselling will be studied by using a randomised controlled trial (RCT) design. Specialised care will be offered to a selected group of patients with severe disorders. Information about mental health mental health problems and coping skills will be distributed via community mental health promotion workshops (CMHP) school mental health programmes radio programs and printed materials. Advocacy work will be focused on increasing the human resources in public mental health services in Dang.

The statistics are very alarmi...ng in all target countries. Child abuse is practiced on a daily basis. Strong cultural practices lead to child abuse such as child marriage and female genital mutilation, that are unhealthy for the children and many have even lost their lives as a consequence. Caregivers need to have the right information to be able to understand that children are vulnerable, but at the same time they are the future of each country. The programme empowers and trains the partners to work with the emotional, social and physical wellbeing of the vulnerable children and the caregivers in the community. Also awareness raising and training on physical- and sexual abuse, gender based violence, psychosocial overload, armed conflicts and hindrance to quality education are included. The programme goal is caring and safe community contributing for emotional and social wellbeing of vulnerable children. The purpose is enhanced psychosocial capacity and competence of partners to promote care and protection for OVC:s and their caregivers in communities. The programme benefits the caregivers and children in the community. Also the capacity of partners increases in working with children and youth. Fida partners with FGCK; Full Gospel Churches of Kenya, PCU; Pentecostal Churches of Uganda, CEPAC; Communaute des Eglises, and CEPBU; Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi in the programme

Mine accidents are common in t...he rural areas of Arauca province as there are lots of landmines and explosives set by the guerrilla groups during the long-time armed conflict. Landmine accident survivors are often stigmatized, which together with the physical disability causes psychological problems to many of them. Their legal status is also not the same as that of other persons with disabilities, which affects their economic situation. Project improves living conditions and realization of rights of persons who have a disability as consequence of a landmine or unexploded ordnance accident. Project activities include psychosocial and legal support, development of the mine survivors organization ASODIGPAZ, different trainings and awareness raising for the survivors and their families as well as trainings on how to prevent new accidents in communities. Expected results: the survivors are empowered and able to claim their rights. Their sosio-economic status has improved and they cooperate as change makers through their own organisation, supporting each other and advocating for their rights and raising awareness in communities. The implementing partner is Lutheran World Federation (LWF) - Department for World Service (DWS). DWS is an internationally recognized humanitarian and development arm of the Lutheran World Federation. https://colombia.lutheranworld.org

STRENGTHENING AND EXPANDING TH...E COMMUNITY MODEL OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE IN NEPAL

Strengthening and Expanding th...e Community Model of Mental Health Care in Nepal
more
|
Prevalence of mental health di...sorders is high in rural parts of Nepal and access to mental health services can be very limited due to challenges in awareness recognition and treatment options. The project aims to promote mental health and increase access to mental health services in public health network within the districts of Lamjung and Dhading. Specific aims are to 1) promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma related to problems with mental health 2) increase accessibility and effectiveness of mental health treatment in government health facilities and 3) empower community and people with mental disorders to advocate their rights and better access to treatment. The focus is on strengthening primary level outpatient treatment in line with WHO's recommendations and Nepal's National Mental Health Policy of 2017. The project implements a similar model that was previously adapted to Dang district. The model is based on strengthening already existing public health structures from health posts to specialized psychiatric hospitals by training health workers already publicly employed to recognize refer and treat mental health issues as well as raising citizens? awareness through workshops and advocacy. Local and district level mental health groups are established to promote the rights of mentally ill people and enable citizens participation in decision making. Public health network is engaged in project activities and meetings to ensure continuity of mental health services after end of the project. Lastly mental health workshops are held for migrant workers in Kathmandu in collaboration with SASK. A qualitative study will be conducted to understand factors impacting migrant workers? mental health.

1. What will be doneThe final ...report will be based on the research conducted in 2017-2020 about the state of psychiatric care and related matters in Tanzanian prisons. An extensive data collection has already been completed but the statistical analysis and the concluding report with practical implications are still missing2. Why will it be doneThe Tanzanian Ministry of Health has noticed that the state of psychiatric care in prisons is worse than elsewhere in the society. In our project we have confirmed this during our numerous prison visits. This is a human rights issue. These prisoners could benefit from better care during the imprisonment and when they will return to the society. This also benefits their families and contributes to stability in the society at large3. Immediate resultsThe results of the current research will for the first time make it possible to develop the psychiatric care in Tanzanian prisons based on research data which has been collected in the actual conditions of prisons in TanzaniaThe implementation into practice will be backed up by written suggestions for improvement and by organizing a concluding seminar for the top leaders and the health department of Prison Services Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs4. BeneficiariesDirect: The prisoners with psychiatric problems developed before or during the imprisonmentIndirect: Personnel in the Prison organization and in MEHATA plus the BSc-students in psychiatry involved as interviewers5. The Project Executers1. The Mental Health Association of Tanzania planning and implementing the research project 2. The Tanzania Prison Services practical arrangements3. Vaasan Kehitysmaaseura6. Why Is This Exit Phase NecessaryThe research project was extended with two additional parts during the first year. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs agreed with this and recommended to apply extra funding for a continuation project for year 2021 . This will enable statistical handling of data an analysis of the findings and a final report plus a concluding seminar which contributes to the implementation of the research results in developing psychiatric care in th

|
