Global Impact: Socio-economic, health services, TB & HIV
Lancet Infectious Diseases Volume 22, Issue 11e327-e335.
In February, 2022, WHO published new guidelines with six recommendations to update the global public health strategy against schistosomiasis, including expansion of preventive chemotherapy eligibility from the predominant group of school-age...d children to all age groups (2 years and older), lowering the prevalence threshold for annual preventive chemotherapy, and increasing the frequency of treatment. This Review, written by the 2018-2022 Schistosomiasis Guidelines Development Group and its international partners, presents a summary of the new WHO guideline recommendations for schistosomiasis along with their historical context, supporting evidence, implications for public health implementation, and future research needs.more

In one of his final essays, statesman and former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan said, ‘Snakebite is the most important tropical disease you’ve never heard of’. Mr. Annan firmly believed that victims of snakebite envenoming should be recognised and afforded greater efforts at impro...ved prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. During the last years of his life, he advocated strongly for the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the global community to give greater priority to this disease of poverty and its victims.more
This report shows that frontier agriculture is a viable complement to conventional agriculture, particularly in Africa and countries affected by fragility, conflict, and violence (FCV).
Schistosoma haematobium is a parasitic digenetic trematode responsible for schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia). The disease is caused by penetration of the skin by the parasite, spread by intermediate host molluscs in stagnant waters, and can be treated by administration of praziquantel. Schis...tosomiasis is considered to be an important but neglected tropical disease.more

Communities living along the shoreline and on the islands of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania
remain endemic for schistosomiasis and suffer from the life-threatening morbidities associated with the disease.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have collectively remained the leading causes of death worldwide and substantially contribute to loss of health and excess health system costs. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study has tracked trends in death and disability since 1990 a...nd has provided an updated perspective on the status of cardiovascular health globally, regionally, and nationally.more

This was a school-based cross-sectional study conducted in 2015 among 305 school children aged 7–16 years from two primary schools located in Ilemela and Magu Districts, north-western Tanzania. Single stool and urine samples w...ere collected from each participant and examined for the presence of Schistosoma mansoni eggs, parasite antigen, and parasite DNA using KK thick smears, POC-CCA tests, and real-time PCR, respectively.more

The role of malacological surveys to identify potential transmission sites for schistosomiasis control in this era of
mass drug administration have received little attention. In that context, the present study was conducted to
...
determine the abundance, identity and disease transmission potential of intermediate host snails for intestinal
schistosomiasis on Ijinga Island, north-western Tanzania.more
Infectious Diseases of Poverty (2020) 9:74
To detect acute schistosomiasis, low-intensity infections, or to verify the success of treatment with
praziquantel, highly sensitive test methods are required. The aim of this study was therefore to demonstrate the
performance of Schistosoma mansoni spec...ific DNA detection in serum and urine using real-time polymerase chain
reaction (PCR) in an endemic area before and after treatment.more
Infect Dis Poverty (2021) 10:15.
Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a sensitive and specific method for diagnosing schistoso-
miasis. However, this method should be performed in a laboratory, usually located distant from the sample collection
site. Therefore, it is important to have fas...t sampling preservation methods, which allow simple transport prior to DNA
extraction and amplification. The aim of this study was to verify if blood samples applied to filter paper are suitable for
analysis of Schistosoma mansoni DNA by real-time PCR.more
Severe asthma is associated with high morbidity, mortality, and health care utilization, but its burden in Africa is unknown. This article wants to determine the burden (prevalence,
mortality, and activity and work impairment) of severe asthma in 3 countries in East Africa: Uganda, Kenya, and Ethio...pia using the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society case definition of severe asthma.more
