Chapitre 50.

The WHO Malaria Threats Map is an interactive online platform that showcases the latest global data on four critical biological threats to effective malaria control and elimination: mosquito insecticide resistance, Plasmodium falciparum hrp2/3 gene deletions, antimalarial drug resistance, and the ...spread of invasive vector species. Designed for public health professionals and researchers, the map allows users to explore and filter data regionally, track emerging resistance patterns, and view visual trends. Its purpose is to inform strategies for surveillance, guide policy-making, and support efforts to eliminate malaria, particularly by anticipating and responding to biological challenges that could undermine control programs.

Malaria in children presents significant clinical challenges, with variations in presentation based on the malaria parasite involved and the child's underlying health conditions. The World Health Organization reports high incidence rates, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, and emphasizes the import...ance of effective treatment strategies. First-line treatment often involves Artemether-Lumefantrine (ALu), while severe malaria requires careful management and the use of intravenous Quinine. Management protocols emphasize early diagnosis and the monitoring of severe complications to reduce mortality.

Surveillance is a core malaria intervention. Data standards, tools and curricula materials have been developed to support countries to strengthen and monitor national routine surveillance systems and to support use of data for decision-making in all transmission settings. These standards have been d...eveloped into malaria modules in DHIS2 for countries using this platform. These tools comprise: modules for burden reduction and elimination settings; aggregate module; case-based module and modules for entomological surveillance and vector control interventions

Available in English, French an Spanish. The Malaria Threats Map is an interactive data platform which provides a geographic overview of the status of the 4 biological threats to malaria control and elimination
This guidance covers different options for banning or phasing out a pesticide and suggests related risk reduction measures to be taken during the phase-out period. A key focus of this guidance is how to take action to manage, prevent, minimize, and communicate about identified risks during the imple...mentation of a phase-out strategy. It contains a description of legal aspects to consider when phasing out a product and illustrates how a risk communication plan can be structured and implemented. How different stakeholders may be involved when a pesticide is going to be phased out is also described.

Due to the heterogeneous distribution of malaria transmission and its determinants, subnational tailoring (SNT) provides an analytical framework to facilitate the targeting of each population with appropriate intervention packages for maximum impact to inform national strategic planning and prioriti...zation based on resources available. The WHO Global Malaria Programme recommends the use of subnational data on disease epidemiology and other relevant local contextual factors to facilitate the process of SNT. Once the strategies and intervention mixes have been defined, programmes can proceed to the prioritization of
interventions for effective programming, based on available resources

New data from the WHO reveal that an estimated 2.2 billion cases of malaria and 12.7 million deaths have been averted since 2000, but the disease remains a serious global health threat, particularly in the WHO African Region. According to WHO’s latest World malaria report, there were an estimated ...263 million cases and 597 000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023. This represents about 11 million more cases in 2023 compared to 2022, and nearly the same number of deaths. Approximately 95% of the deaths occurred in the WHO African Region, where many at risk still lack access to the services they need to prevent, detect and treat the disease.
