The Medicines for Malaria Vent...ure (MMV) was established in 1999 to build and manage a research and development portfolio capable of leading to the registration of at least one new antimalarial drug every five years. Although partnered with industry, MMV's focus is on discovery and development of drugs that will be affordable to populations living in malaria endemic areas. MMV manages and directs research and development activities carried out at a broad variety of institutions, comprising 42 academic and pharmaceutical organizations located in 10 different countries. At present, there are 38 candidate anti-malarial agents in MMV's portfolio, including several completely new therapeutic targets. This portfolio is highly dynamic and managed to accelerate the identification and development of promising candidates and also the recognition and rapid replacement of less promising drug projects.

The AMC programme has continue...d to perform strongly against its original objectives:
Accelerate the development of pneumococcal vaccines that meet developing country needs as specified in the Target Product Profile, (this has been achieved with two manufacturers meeting production requirements for a scale up of coverage in Gavi-eligible countries).
Bring forward the availability of effective pneumococcal vaccines for developing countries by guaranteeing the initial purchase price for a limited quantity of new vaccines that represent value for money and incentivises manufacturers to invest in scaling up production capacity to meet developing country vaccine demand, (achieved as above, although a third manufacturer has taken longer than expected to enter the global market).
Accelerate vaccine uptake by ensuring predictable vaccine pricing for countries and manufacturers, including binding commitments by participating companies to supply vaccines at low, long-term and sustainable prices. (There has been good progress with 58 Gavi-eligible countries choosing to introduce the pneumococcal vaccine and average coverage in Gavi-eligible countries rising to 40% in 2016. Coverage levels in nearly all countries approach coverage levels for other routine vaccinations within three years of introduction).

UNAIDS estimates that the Coro...na pandemic will result in 500 thousand additional deaths from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa alone (470 thousand people died overall in 2018). The additional funding, among other things, will ensure that continuous, life-saving supplies of HIV medicines can be provided during the pandemic and that vulnerable groups continue to have access to HIV prevention services.

The World Health Organization ...(WHO) is a technical United Nations agency which sets global norms and standards in health. Australia provides WHO with annual core voluntary contributions in a flexible manner to support the WHO's General Programme of Work. The Australia-WHO Strategic Partnership Framework provides the framework for all Australia contributions to WHO, including the annual core voluntary contributions. Australian Government funding contributes to: strengthening health systems; achieving better health outcomes and identifying and addressing emerging regional health issues. Funding under this investment represents Australia's core voluntary core contribution valued at $12.36 million, to be expensed during the 2017-18 financial year.
