ALLIANCES FOR CHAGAS ELIMINATI...ON IN CENTRAL AMERICA

Global economic losses caused ...by Chagas disease are estimated at USD$7 billion (just under CA$9 billion) per year. In Central America, five million poor people living in houses made of mud, adobe, or thatch materials are at risk of contracting Chagas disease. The most important Chagas transmission vector in the region is Triatoma dimidiata, a native insect with the capacity to re-infest houses a few months after chemical spraying. Despite longstanding insecticide-based control measures to eliminate household infestation, Chagas transmission persists in many rural areas of the region. Following the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Committee for Chagas Control in Central America and Mexico, novel control interventions, including house improvements, will soon start in priority disease hotspots. Past research has shown that long-lasting, low-cost, and culturally adapted house improvements are successful in making houses resistant to vector re-infestation and preventing infection. This project, implemented in partnership with the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, will demonstrate the feasibility of eliminating Chagas as a public health threat in a highly endemic area, and set the basis for its replication in other hotspots of Central America and Mexico. It will take place in the most important hotspot of Chagas transmission located along the Guatemala-El Salvador border, targeting 48 rural communities of the Jutiapa Department in Guatemala. In addition to reducing disease transmission, the project will significantly improve the living conditions of 32,400 vulnerable people. An integrated disease control plan will combine community actions to reduce transmission risk factors (such as housing improvements) with access to timely diagnoses and treatment of infected individuals. Among the activities are training for health professionals in the development, evaluation, and integration of this approach into national public health policies, and reinforcement of surveillance systems. IDRC, in partnership with the Drugs for Neglected Disease Initiative and in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, aim to expand donor support and local action to halt the transmission of this entirely preventable, costly, and debilitating disease.

The project's objective is to ...improve the health conditions of the rural population at risk of vector-transmitted diseases through support to the Honduran National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Chagas Disease and Leishmaniasis. The purpose is to support reduction or elimination of the transmission of Chagas and Leishmaniasis diseases and to facilitate access to necessary treatment for vulnerable, priority populations. In coordination with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Global Affairs Canada provides technical and financial support to the Honduran Ministry of Health in the implementation of its Strategy, while at the same time, it develops the Ministry's institutional capacity to manage its vector-borne disease programs as a whole.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Prevent sp...read of viruses and concerned vectors (mosquitoes):
• Prevent outbreaks of zoonotic viruses with an existing identified or potential risk in the region (West Nile, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, Rift valley fever, …)
• Improve integrated surveillance (animal, human, entomological)
• Provide risk assessment of the different emerging viruses (transmission, spread, human impact…)
• Recommend and implement public health measures for control where possible

INTEGRATING THE PREVENTION AND... TREATMENT OF NTDS IN THE AMHARA REGION OF ETHIOPIA
more
|
Integrating the prevention and... treatment of NTDs in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia
more
|
The project will address two o...f the leading causes of chronic disability in the Amhara region ? the neglected tropical diseases (NTD?s) Podoconiosis and Trachoma. If the people with trachoma or podo will not get help in time the disease will disable them eventually. The ability to walk becomes impossible if podo is allowed to develop and trachoma leads to blindness. Women are two times more likely to become blind because women have been last to be treated. That is why the project will ensure that half of the treated will be female. The project aims to integrate the prevention and treatment of the diseases in the Amhara Region in Ethiopia. Both diseases are stigmatizing people although prevention and treatment are simple. The diseases affect the poorest and the most marginalized groups. They are both a cause and a consequence of poverty social inequality and a lack of access to basic services including healthcare. And yet if simplified the cure for both diseases at the early stage comes with soap and water. The project helps build sustainable services through institution and capacity building of the formal health care system and local communities. There's an essential link between clean water sanitation and hygiene with podo and trachoma. In the Amhara region clean water coverage is just 432% and podoconiosis affects 4% of the adult population. That's why the project will test collaboration with WASH partners in selected high endemic districts for instance in schools. The schools will help reach childrens. It is essential because trachoma infection is highest among young children. Awareness raising among health workers teachers as well as women group religious and political leaders is part of the strategy. The message is to keep face and feet clean.

Technical Support for Namibia ...in Eliminating Rabies in Dogs
more
|
Rabies is the longest and best... known zoonosis and causes still about 70 000 human deaths per year. The infection occurs in two thirds of countries worldwide, the half of mankind is living in endemic areas. Namibia has made considerable efforts to control the disease since years without achieving eradication. This project, which is coordinated by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), aims at supporting the Namibian veterinary services to identify the epidemiological background of the infection and to protect people and domestic animals from infection by vaccination mass campaigns of pet dogs.
