Digital Square works to create... a future where governments and decision-makers can access the information they need to ensure better health outcomes for all. The activity aims to perpetuate the pilot programs by aligning donors and the digital community around shared goals, supporting technical capacity in-country, coordinating and aligning investments around government priorities to achieve lasting impact, and promoting the reuse and adaptation of existing open-source digital health solutions. In Bangladesh, the activity will use FY17 funds to continue providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to maintain the operations of the digitized supply chain management systems developed by USAID in the last six years. Digital Square will work with a local Information Technology firm to assist MoHFW to maintain and use the system for procurement planning..

BREAKTHROUGH - Research
Breakthrough-RESEARCH will con...vene and engage a broad range of health and development stakeholders, supporting them in developing, promoting, and operationalizing visionary, consensus-driven agendas for Social and Behavior Change (SBC) research that contribute to measurable global health impact by providing the evidence needed to increase the practice of priority health behaviors and enable social norms for improved health and development outcomes. This may include, for example, synthesizing evidence and building consensus around SBC research agendas, designing and implementing high-priority SBC studies, and developing research utilization strategies and products tailored to end-users. Breakthrough-RESEARCH may also conduct performance and impact evaluations of SBC activities implemented through Mission bilateral or other central projects.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication - from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic - to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program - which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) - is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Engage HCD (Human-Centered Des...ign)
more
EngageHCD is a contracting veh...icle available to USAID's Bureau for Global Health and Missions to procure state-of-the-art human-centered design services. Design is a methodology that places people and other critical stakeholders at the center of the design and implementation process. The design methodology s approach to problem solving is iterative, measurable, results-driven, and interdisciplinary. It can help find solutions to issues that are ingrained in global health, such as (i) complexity of navigating and coordinating stakeholder ecosystems, (ii) difficulty in changing user behaviors, (iii) barriers to scaling compelling solutions, (iv) introducing new capabilities and collaboration models through co-creation, and (v) strengthening strategy and implementation planning. Design can drive impact and serve as a complement to our existing programs and partners through accelerating human-centered innovation. For more information on the use of design in global health, see http://www.engagehcd.com/ and https://www.designforhealth.org/. The implementing partners of this mechanism are a consortium of Lunar, Veryday, Matchboxology, PATH, and McKinsey Digital Labs. These partners bring impressive expertise across the intersection of design and global health. Lunar, McKinsey Digital Labs, and Veryday are design studios within McKinsey&Company, and together, constitute one of the largest design firms globally. Matchboxology is Africa s first design firm with over a decade of public health and development experience in the continent. PATH is a trusted partner of governments and communities in 50+countries with a wealth of global health-centric design. This consortium represents a cross-disciplinary team including anthropologists, designers, human-factor engineers, business-model designers, digital experts, and behavior change experts. The mechanism is available for both headquarter and mission buy-in. We encourage proposals and look forward to working with both our Washingt

The Health Systems Strengtheni...ng Accelerator (HSSA) is a 5-year global project. It will provide a global platform to connect locally-driven health system innovations with global knowledge, accelerate countries' journeys to self-reliant health systems, and improve the institutional architecture for evidence-based and sustainable health system strengthening. This project will address persistent health systems problems at the local and global levels through understanding of problems and root causes; evidence translation; innovation and iterative adaptation; understanding of motivation, incentives, and political dynamics; and focusing on institutionalization and sustainability.

MEDICINES, TECHNOLOGIES, AND P...HARMACEUTICAL SERVICES (MTAPS)
more
Medicines, Technologies, and P...harmaceutical Services (MTaPS)
more
The goal of MTaPS is to enable... low- and middle-income countries to strengthen their pharmaceutical systems to ensure sustainable access to and appropriate use of safe, effective, quality-assured, and affordable essential medical products and medicines-related pharmaceutical services. The purpose of MTaPS is to provide pharmaceutical system strengthening assistance for sustained improvements in health system performance, and to advance USAID s goals of Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths, Controlling the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, and Combatting Infectious Disease Threats, as well as expanding essential health coverage. MTaPS works to strengthen essential areas of the pharmaceutical sector, including regulatory capacity, supply chain management, pharmaceutical financing and services, and pharmaceutical management information systems. Within this context, MTaPS addresses USG priority health elements including malaria, HIV/AIDS, family planning and reproductive health, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases, and the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). MTaPS focuses on enhancing pharmaceutical services through patient-centered solutions while continuing to support essential supply chain functions and medical products supply security. The MTaPS result areas address the five health systems components (governance, human resources, information, financing, and service delivery) as they pertain to pharmaceutical management, informing the design of potential interventions to ensure that they respond to health element and cross-cutting concerns in support of health system strengthening.

Sustaining Technical and Analy...tic Resources (STAR)
more
STAR improves the effectivenes...s of global health programs worldwide by developing and strengthening the capacity of global health professionals by placing fellows and interns in external institutions, primarily in USAID-supported countries, and in USAID in partnership with academic and other institutions. STAR strengthens the technical and analytic professional cadre of human resources for global health by partnering with organizations of higher learning, development research, and/or health professional associations. Leveraging the expertise, resources, and partnerships of academic institutions and many other types of organizations, STAR contributes to strengthening institutions in developing countries that provide technical leadership and improve systems that promote technical collaboration across the global health community. STAR strengthens the pool of health professionals globally through field experience with developing country organizations, provides opportunities to diverse health professionals who mirror the populations USAID serves globally to build their skills and gain exposure to international health programs, and improves collaborative systems and long-term, sustainable partnerships for open exchange and utilization of information, knowledge, and educational resources to promote technical excellence and learning.

PHSP will provide technical as...sistance to 203 private for-profit health facilities to provide high-impact primary health services. Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria funds will expand and enhance PPM-DOTS and malaria treatment; and MCH/FP/RH funds will be used to ensure better access and quality of maternal and child health and FP/RH services in the urban setting. USAID will complete a rapid assessment to investigate the potential for various levels of private facilities to deliver MCH services; increase access to integrated FP services; initiate youth friendly FP services and expand diagnosis and treatment for TB. The activity will also ensure the flow of TB, malaria and FP commodities to private facilities and ensure private facilities are included as part of the integrated supportive supervision led by the Regional Health Bureaus to improve health services.
