Good Samaritan Program (GSP) i...s a pan-African program by the United Bible Societies. It is implemented in over 20 countries in Africa and coordinated by HIV Service. Bible Society of Burundi (BSB) has the main responsibility of the grass root level implementation. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV and stigma of people infected and affected. Through training activities GSP aims to behavioral change that reduces HIV contamination as well as stigmatization and discrimination of people living with HIV and AIDS.GSP promotes tolerance love and human rights. Interactive approach shares information about HIV&AIDS. By utilizing texts from the Bible (e.g. Good Samaritan story) and other material GSP reveals the attitudes and beliefs that maintain discrimination. GSP supports the goals Government of Burundi's (GOB) concerning maternal newborn health and HIV and AIDS. Project encourages people to get tested: the cooperation/network between BSB and the VCTs is in a core of the project. This is how GSP is in line with the GOB health goals (National Health Development Plan 2011-15) which aims to provide all Burundian citizens increased access to basic health care. During the 3rd phase cooperation with organizations providing ARVs food and other services to PLHA will also be widened. Through communication advocacy and disseminating adequate health information GSP has means to change opinions and contribute to the common goals defined by UNAIDS. Project activities are based on interactive training on different levels. Training material include booklets videos and flipchart for trainees and manual for trainers. Take Charge youth component has its own material package. The project will continue with the existing structure and target on churches congregations and communities. The 3rd phase is emphasizing the inclusive approach: goal is to ensure the participation of People with Visual Disabilities (PVDs) on all activity levels from the planning till the implementation. These choices are in line with the Finnish Government to strengthen marginalized groups participation in the development projects. During the 2nd phase of GSP implementation Finnish Bible Society (FiBS) and BSB have systematically continued building their capacity on disabilities. Regular cooperation with FIDIDA supports and ensures professionalism in the inclusive approach.

Good Samaritan Program (GSP) i...s a pan-African program by the United Bible Societies. It is implemented in over 20 countries in Africa and coordinated by HIV service. Bible Society of Cóte d'Ivoire (BSCI) has the main responsibility in the grass root level implementation. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV and stigmatization of people infected and affected. Project aims to involve church partners and communities to HIV work. In the core of the GSP are human rights: PLHA as well as their families deserve to be treated equally with other members of the society. Rights based and gender sensitive approach is directly linked with Christian values. GSP is contributing to the Côte d?Ivoire national policies where reducing the stigma of PLHA and avoid new infections are the prioritiesGood Samaritan program will not intervene directly in the sector of health care but use partnership and guide people in need to the suitable aid providers. However through communication advocacy and disseminating adequate health information GSP has means to change opinions and contribute to the common goals defined by UNAIDSGSP trainings are based on multimedia package which includes booklets videos and flipcharts for trainees and manuals for trainers. The package is available in English and French (including Braille) and it is translated into local languages. The key project activities include Sensitization for leaders Training of Trainees (ToT) Decentralized Workshops (DWs) Follow up (FU) home visits and Take Charge (TC).Like during the 1st and 2nd project phase GSP targets churches local congregations and communities. However for the 3rd phase of the project BSCI has special focus on two topics:- To integrate deaf to the project - To focus on the families to prevent parent to child transmission and to reduce the infections among couplesGSP staff has witnessed the lack of correct information about HIV among deaf communities. Deaf audiences can be heavily affected by HIV but often left out from development projects. GSP?s aim is to integrate deaf to the project by cooperation with deaf schools and organizations with specifically designed materials. Fidida will provide external consultation in FinlandBecause of the high infection rates among couples GSP also focuses on pregnant women and couples. Objective is to raise awareness and responsible behavior and prevent parent to child transmiss

The program aims to reduce the... number of hiv-infections in Ethiopia and increase understanding toward persons infected with hiv, living with aids and toward orphaned vulnerable children in the society through awareness-raising and information. Ethiopia has still about 800.000 hiv-infected persons and about one million OVCs, even if it has been able to reduce the number of new infections in the last years. The program includes training of trainers and it also serves as material producer and material center. It is implemented in wide cooperation with the state and other non-governmental organizations. The implementing agency is the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus / Development and Social Services Commission central office (EECMY-DASSC) in Addis Ababa. It is implemented in the area of 10 synods in the whole country, and its outreach is approximately 1,5 million people yearly. The church introduced hiv/aids-work among the first organizations in the end of 1980ies and has made a decision in principle to include awareness-raising about hiv/aids.

The project aims to contribute... to the overall socio-economic empowerment of women and children in Mersa surroundings. In the project area, especially women suffer of extreme poverty, negative cultural practices and abuse because of their position and condition in the society. Women's economic dependence on men is one of the root causes for women to be marginalized, which leads also to violation of women's rights. Also, women's access to decision-making processes is very limited. By the end of the third phase of the project, women have been trained to improve their livelihoods and they know about accountings and can get micro-loans to establish small enterprises. Negative cultural practices are changing, family planning enhanced and the number of hiv-infections reduced through awareness-raising and women's groups. Psychosocial support is offered to people living with aids and to orphaned vulnerable children. Access to basic education for girls is improved through changing of attitudes, school mentoring and provision of school materials to girls of poor families. The direct beneficiaries of the project are about 25.000 women and girls in Mersa surroundings and indirect beneficiaries about 22.000 persons. The implementing agency is the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus-Development and Social Services Commission-North Central Synod (EECMY-DASSC-NCS) in Dessie.

HIV/AIDS implications on the M...ozambican communities are dire. For example, it has led to a reduction of life expectancy at birth and consequently to the reduction of the HDI. At present, 15% of pregnant women between 15-49 years are HIV positive. Demographic impact of AIDS for 2008 estimate that in 2009, nearly 1.6 million people were living with HIV/AIDS. These included 55.5% women & 9.2% children younger than 15 years. The project aims at supporting communities to reduce risk and vulnerability to HIV infection and to alleviate the impact of the epidemic on the affected households with a strong focus on women; through development of the economic capacities of the most vulnerable households and promotion of human rights, particularly the rights of PLWHAs (People Living with HIV/AIDS) and OVCs (Orphaned and Vulnerable Children) in the urban districts of Kamatova and Kamaxaquene. These are high density suburbs located in the outskirts of Maputo City in Mozambique. The area has high poverty rates and prone to pandemic diseases such as cholera, malaria and HIV/AIDS. In addition, the area is one of the central when it comes to domestic violence and other human rights violations, prostitution, and sexual abuse against women and young girls due to poverty.Objectives:1. Improved food security2. Improved knowledge on pandemics at household level3. Strengthened capacities of Community Based Organisations4. Increased access of communities to Credit 5. Increased capacity of staff in implementing the project Activities: a. Promoting home gardeningb. Promoting income generationc. Facilitating and supporting savings and credit schemesd. Promoting access to education for vulnerable childrene. Promoting vocational training for vulnerable youth f. Supporting community based groups and organisationsg. Raising awareness on harmfulness of domestic violenceh. Home-based care to HIV-patients and psycho-social support to HIV-affected familiesThe main right-holders /beneficiaries of the project are 1500 vulnerable households from the urban districts of Kamavota and Kamaxaquene in Maputo City. These are vulnerable households from mainly women headed households, OVCs, Elderly and handicapped people. The project aims to reach at least 60% women beneficiaries. The project reaches also Development Committee Members in each of the 6 villages, Peer Educators, members of HIV Associations and activists from the selected areas, and locals school students.Implementing partner: The Ecumenical Committee for Social Development (CEDES). CEDES is a local based NGO based in Maputo town. CEDES implements programmes in livelihoods, advocacy, humanitarian response and DRR; skills training of the young people and human rights based interventions. It has a strong component on livelihoods targeting the people living with HIV/AIDS.

INTEGRATED PROJECT AGAINST HIV.../AIDS

Integrated project against HIV.../AIDS

HIV/AIDS continues to pose a s...erious threat to people living in southern Somalia: according to some estimates approximately 75.000 people are HIV positive. Somalia being a weak state its statistics is poor; in reality the figure is much higher. Communities in Banadir and lower Shabelle regions have limited access to education and health care. Large parts of these communities are still not correctly informed on health issues hygiene and STIs. People s knowledge of HIV/AIDS is commonly based on false beliefs and incorrect information spread by healers. Using a condom is a taboo and people living with HIV are stigmatised. The direct objective of the project is to raise awareness and capacities of target communities to fight HIV/AIDS. In the long term the achievements lead to non-rising/decreased prevalence rates in the project area and the surrounding communities. The partner organisation in the project is KASAB - Community Empowerment Programme. This project is a continuation to the ongoing project of six years financed by Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The main beneficiaries of the project are the youth and the so called bridge populations e.g. female tea vendors IDPs truck drivers and Khat dealers. Investing in the youth means investing in the future. The National AIDS Forum healthcare workers and community health promoters are also direct beneficiaries. The project empowers women by targeting especially female tea vendors who will become increasingly aware of the risks and ways to protect oneself from HIV/AIDS. In case of HIV/AIDS in the family women are the ones responsible for the extra resources for coping with the situation. Marginalised IDPs will be given attention. By raising awereness on HIV/AIDS the project aims to reduce stigma around the disease and that way contribute to social inclusion of the often discriminated HIV positive and to social and economic equality in the long run. HIV and climate change being profoundly linked communities with stronger response to AIDS epidemic are also better equipped to social resilience against climate change threats. The key project activities include identifying and training volunteer community health promoters training healthcare workers and risk groups organising HIV/AIDS campaigns and events and preparing and broadcasting a drama to be sent in the local radio and printing an educational booklet on HIV/AIDS.

F.a: Changing Cultures
|
The project aims to prevent hi...v/aids by cultural sensitive family counselling, marriage seminars and training of trainers. Awareness raising and campaigns are conducted in secondary schools. Widows and young people affected by hiv/aids are granted micro credits. The local cultural habits and taboos are one of the main reasons for high hiv and aids prevalence in the Iringa-Makambako area. The project takes hold in these cultural root causes in order to change attitudes and behaviour to reduce the spread of hiv and aids.Through trainings people learn to recognise the link between the spread of hiv and aids and their cultural habits and this motivates them to behaviour change. Training of trainers aims to retain the knowledge and spread it forward within the communities. Secondary school students get information and support and widows and young people living in a difficult situations can improve their lives by micro credit scheme. The beneficiaries of the project are families and communities in Iringa-Makambako area, particularly women and girls who are affected by hiv and aids and who are living in contradiction between the traditional models and modern world. The project is implemented by University of Iringa UOI (formerly ELCT Tumaini University Iringa University College IUCO). The university has good knowledge of and experience in counselling and research of local traditions.

The programme works for the im...provement of the quality of life of community members, especially vulnerable children I Nabuyoga area, East Uganda. The current focus is on the promotion of livelihoods and education. Although 91% of children start primary education, many of them drop out and only less than thrid of pupils ending the 6th grade achieve needed literacy and numeracy skills. Diseases like malaria and HIV and AIDS are prevalent. Many problems and challenges are linked to weak economic and livelihoods opportunities. Currently farmers are mobilizing themselves to work as groups and unions, and youth and women receive vocational training and support. Farmers are trained in effective ans sustainable farming methods, food storaging and marketing. Education and health services are promoted by community action. Community people receive information about their public rights in the local Dhopadhola language in order to understand and to claim for their rights. 112 health volunteers and 60 'model mothers' train other community people on nutrition and on the prevention of malaria and HIV. Several church leaders are involved in awareness raising on HIV and AIDS. Through community action, school lunch meals have been ensured in all schools in the area. Community action has also resulted in better access of health services and this work is continuing. The community action groups also act as 'watch dogs' for whom children dare to report issues like people trying to steal school lunch fees. Newspapers are provided for schools in order to boost children's reading habits and skills. The programme benefits 15.000 people in 37 villages. During the year 2016 the programme will undergo an evaluation. The results will be used to re-design the programme. The main partner is World Vision Uganda that runs the implementation and accounts for the use of funding.

PLARD phase II: Program for Lu...apula Agriculture and Rural Development
more
|
The overall objective of the P...LARD programme is to contribute to the development of an efficient competetive and sustainable agricultural and rural sector which ensures increased income and food security for the people in Luapula Province. PLARD II is a new phase of the long history of the Finnish Zambian cooperation in the agricultural and builds on the PLARD I successful initiatives and processes. The programme is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock with technical assistance provided by a Finnish consultancy company Finnish Consulting Group (FCG). This objective is to be achieved through the following Five (5) closely interlinked components: i). Agribusiness development that aims to raise farm incomes and enhance household wealth through support to groups-based participatory approach to ?farming as a business?? and value chain development of 1-2 specific products. ii). Agriculture aimed at improving crop and livestock production for food security and livelihood resilience purposes through a Commodity Study Group approach. iii). Capture fisheries focusing on developing sustainable co-management systems and structures for the two large fisheries in Luapula Province: Lakes Mweru-Luapula and Bangweulu. iv). Aquaculture with a focus on promoting fish farming for food security and income generation mostly in the upland areas of the province and enhancing Crop - Aquaculture ?Livestock integration. v). Institutional and organisational capacity development of MAL focusing on strengthening the financial management procurement planning monitoring and evaluation systems and increasing MAL capacity to effectively coordinate with other actors in agriculture / fisheries. Well encompassed in the programme are the cross-cutting themes as defined by MFA-Finland at the beginning of PLARD-II; i) Gender; ii) HIV/AIDS and vulnerable groups; and iii) Environment and climate change. PLARD II is operating in seven districts of Luapula Province covering eighty-seven (87) camps out of total of one hundred and seventy nine (179) camps and 145 fishing villages (represented by VMCs) in lakes Mweru-Luapula and Bangweulu.

F.A: REGIONAL COORDINATION
|
F.a: Regional Coordination
|
Altogether 13 projects will co...me to the conclusion in Eastern Africa in the end of 2015. Of the completed projects, two in Burundi, five in Kenya, and two in Tanzania will be combined into three new projects, one per each country. The regional child sponsorship project (5251) will become one component of the regional coordination project (5260). Regional partner's leadership enhancement project will be completed, because the work will be increasingly aimed towards the grassroots level beneficiaries. In Burundi HIV/AIDS-project (5282) is completed, because the target is to answer more acute needs. Year 2016 Fida will continue to work in Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda. There will be six continuing projects and four new ones, which are combined from former projects, thus there will be altogether 10 projects. At the 2016, two projects will be completed in Ethiopia because of the budget cuts, partner's poor capacity, and because of the country's cumbersome bureaucracy. Year 2016 the regional work will focus on the reduction of poverty and inequality by defending the human rights of the vulnerable people, as well as by reducing the diseases and mortality of children and other vulnerable groups. During year 2016 the aim will be to ensure a participatory approach on all levels, and to ensure, in particular, the voice belonging to the marginalised. Strengthening the capacity of partner's will go on. In addition, the aim is to increase the level of local partners' financial contribution from 10% to 40% by the end of the year 2016. During the year monitoring will be developed to function better. Networking with other NGOs will be increased.

IMPROVING PALLIATIVE CARE IN I...LEMBULA LUTHERAN HOSPITAL
more
|
Improving Palliative Care in I...lembula Lutheran Hospital
more
|
The project aims at strengthen...ing Home Based Care and Palliative Care (HBC&PC) already existing in connection to Ilembula Lutheran Hospital. Prevalence of HIV/AIDS is very high in the catchment area and despite fair availability of ARV-treatment many AIDS-patients are in poor condition and in need of home-based palliative care. Although HIV/AIDS is common there is still a remarkable stigma attached to it and the patients are in danger of being severely marginalized. In addition to HIV/AIDS palliative care also addresses patients with cancer or other life-threatening chronic illnesses (such as heart failure COPD diabetes mellitus physical disability etc.). Overall objective is to ensure as high a quality of life as possible of people living with life-threatening illnesses by providing them adequate pain relief other necessary medication and physical care as well as psychosocial and spiritual support. This will be achieved by improving the quality of care through training the staff and volunteers of the HBC&PC team and the hospital and by ensuring adequate resources for continuation of the work. Of the cross-cutting development policy objectives reducing inequality of all kinds is particularly focused. Gender equality is not taken into account as a separate issue; the selection of the patients is based on their disease and need for care only regardless of their sex age religion ethnic group economic situation etc. There is no obvious influence in the climate sustainability in this project. The project is based on ongoing work and existing basic structures and aims at improving and strengthening them. The key project activities will be: to strengthen the HBC&PC team by further educating the current team members as well as recruiting and training new ones; to teach hospital staff about palliative care; to start basic teaching about palliative care as part of the training of nurse students in the nursing school; to identify the problems in ensuring the availability of the necessary drugs; and to renovate and equip a new palliative care unit (4-6 bed ward & office room) within the hospital. The main beneficiaries are the patients and their families the members of the HBC&PC team the hospital staff and the students in the nursing school. If successful the project may also create in Ilembula Hospital a Centre of Expertise in Palliative Care which could then act as an example and training site for other units too.

Increasing Access to Quality F...amily Planning and Sexual and Reproductive Health for women and marginalized groups in Yemen
more
|
MSIY's rogramme Increasing Acc...ess to Quality Family Planning and Sexual and Reproductive Health for women and marginalized groups in Yemen operates for three years in four governorates of Yemen. The program will improve the access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and family planning (FP) counselling and methods for women of reproductive age and marginalized and underserved populations by building on existing MSIY activities such as outreach and social franchise (SF) and introducing new activities such as HIV testing in centres. The program will extend access to FP/SRH services to approximately 60000 women (social franchisee clients and outreach clients over three years) from the Al Muhamasheen marginalized group and rural areas in four governorates in Yemen. All together this program will avert 10920 Unintended Pregnancies 1130 Unsafe Abortions and create 47912 CYPs.
