Roadmap to secure lasting world free of all polioviruses
The GPEI Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023 lays out the roadmap to achieving and sustaining a world free of all polioviruses. It focuses on three key pillars: Eradication, Integration, and Containment + Certification, as well as critical ena...bling factors such as gender, research and preparing for Post-Certification Strategy (PCS) implementation. It builds on and optimises use of the proven lessons and tools of the GPEI Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018, which has brought the world to the threshold of being polio-free and outlines new strategies and innovations that will help ensure we cross the finish line.

The report notes that iodine deficiency is a leading cause of preventable brain damage worldwide. Insufficient iodine during pregnancy and infancy results in neurological and psychological deficits, reducing a child’s IQ by 8 to 10 points. This translates ...into major losses in the cognitive capital of entire nations and thus their socio-economic development.
The report outlines urgent steps to reduce the risk of mental impairment to babies’ growing brains:
• Integrate salt iodization into national plans to support children’s nutrition and brain development in early childhood;
• Align salt iodization and salt reduction agendas;
• Establish surveillance systems to identify unreached populations;
• Strengthen regulatory systems to enforce existing legislation on salt iodization;
• Recognize the growing importance of fortified foods as potential sources of iodized salt.

Despite Pakistan's progress in reducing the number of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases to 8 in 2017 and 12 in 2018, 2019 has seen a significant rise in the number of WPV1 cases (41 cases as of July 8 2019). One of the most intractable challenges the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) is ...facing is refusals by parents and caregivers to immunise their children with the polio vaccine. In light of this challenge, the Pakistan programme has revisited its strategy and put forward this Extension of the National Emergency Action Plan 2018/2019 (NEAP), which will carry the programme forward from July to December 2019
