The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is committed to eradicating malaria, a disease that continues to cause hundreds of thousands of deaths every year, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2000, global efforts, including increased funding, the deployment of effective tools and greater political engagement, have prevented over 2.2 billion malaria cases and saved 12.7 million lives. However, challenges such as drug and insecticide resistance, climate change, conflict and weakened health systems threaten this progress.
The Foundation's strategy prioritises eliminating Plasmodium falciparum, investing in next-generation surveillance and treatments, and supporting innovations in vector control and diagnostics. Focusing on catalytic impact, the Foundation collaborates closely with a broad network of global partners to increase access to existing tools, develop transformative solutions, and foster extensive political and community support. Eradicating malaria is seen as not only a public health imperative, but also a way of reducing inequality and enabling long-term prosperity in affected regions.
